2013 Portugal The Eastern Algarve, Cacela Velha, Sur Le Ria Formosa, Son Fort, Son Eglise

2013 Portugal The Eastern Algarve, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Presépio Gigante, Giant Crib,Crèche
au nord et à l'ouest, par Castro Marim ;

Cacela Velha and Ria Formosa aerial view - Algarve
Cacela Velha, Algarve
Cacela Velha, in the easternmost Algarve, is a charming village on top of a hill, looking out over the Ria Formosa, a system of barrier islands that stretches for 60 miles. It's a hidden gem on this relatively built up stretch of coast, and the beach beyond it is one of the most unspoilt in southern Portugal. As with all of the Ria Formosa, its status as a nature reserve means walking is obligatory. Leave your car on the rocky bluff, then take the small path down to the right of the imposing fort, dating from 1143. Getting the timing right is all important, the trick being to arrive within an hour or two of low tide, allowing you to wade across to the island. See here for tide times (website in Portuguese) Once there, you can sunbathe until the water drops low enough to return, or catch a ride home with a fisherman if the tide's still too high. This tranquil white beach has a desert island feel about it, and there are storks and eagles to watch in the lagoon.

Figueira da Foz and Buarcos aerial view
Figueira da Foz and Buarcos aerial view
Figueira da Foz is a coastal resort and harbour at the mouth of the River Mondego.
An important centre of shipbuilding and manufacturing during the 18th and 19th centuries, the city (as it became in 1882) developed into a popular tourist destination during the 1920s and 30s and its two mile long sandy beach.
Buarcos is a traditional fishing town that has grown also as a noted beach resort due to the calm waters of its sea, which is protected by the Boa Viagem small mountain range (Serra da Boa Viagem). Many of its inhabitants still work in the fishing industry but tourism is also an important activity. It has many seafood restaurants and bars. With view over the bay and the extensive beach.

Ferragudo, Angrinha Beach, São João do Arade Fort, Grande beach and Portimão Marina aerial view
Ferragudo was known to the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans, who were attracted to the mouth of the Arade River for its shelter and access to the Atlantic Ocean.
São João do Arade Fort the first fortification on the site consisted of a watch tower erected in the reign of King John II of Portugal. Later, following the settlement of Ferragudo (around 1520), to defend the coast of the peninsula from attacks by pirates.
Situated in a dominant position at the mouth of the Arade River, the elevated site divides two beaches: the Praia da Angrinha and the Praia Grande.

Ponta da Piedade, Camilo beach and Dona Ana beach aerial view - Lagos - Algarve
Ponta da Piedade, Camilo Beach and Dona Ana Beach aerial view -Lagos - Algarve
With a magnificent view of the Atlantic and the shapes of cliffs carved by the sea and time, Ponte da Piedade (English: Mercy Point) is an idyllic setting of cut out rocks that sharply contrast with the greenish blue waters below.
Located 2 km from Lagos, full of grottos, unknown bays and quiet beaches, the Ponte da Piedade is particularly captivating when viewed from the sea.
Long, narrow stairs lead you down to a small cove where pretty boats wait for visitors wishing to explore this natural paradise. On these trips, experienced fishermen wind their way expertly through the gigantic stone sculptures whilst revealing their names and secrets. Some names given to these misshapen rocks and perpetuated by fishermen include General De Gaulle, Chaminé (chimney), Catedral (cathedral), Belas-Artes (fine arts), Camelo (camel), Museu (museum), Submarino (underwater), Cozinha (kitchen) and Gruta dos Amores (grotto of love).
Further enriching this setting are the many bird species that make it their habitat. A little distance away from the coastline, there are several islands on the slopes of which it is common to see nests of peregrine falcons, ravens, jackdaws, alpine swifts and pallid swifts, as well as colonies of egrets and cattle egrets.
Those daring to climb up 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse will have a view of the Ponte da Piedade promontory, which marks the limit between land and sea.
