Places to see in ( Livorno - Italy ) Fortezza Nuova
The Fortezza Nuova is a fortification of Livorno. It represents the ancient Baluardo di San Francesco of the pentagonal city designed by Bernardo Buontalenti and originally also incorporated the Baluardo di Santa Barbera, until it was partly dismantled to make room for the second growth of the New Venice district .
The construction of the Fortezza Nuova dates back to the end of the sixteenth century , when the architect Buontalenti was commissioned by the Medici government to draw up a plan for the new city of Livorno. Around 1576 the architect set up a design for an inhabited area enclosed by a wall and a system of pentagonal ditches ; however, the plan did not yet indicate the presence of a real fortress, but was limited to the simple tracing of a continuous fortified circuit, characterized by five bastions at the top of the pentagon and the center line of the northern side, with the sixth from the pre-existing Fortress Old.
In 1577 , work began on the construction of the city and its defensive system, but only around 1589 it was decided to upgrade the military apparatus with the construction of what would later be called Fortezza Nuova. The project is due to the collaboration between Buontalenti, Don Giovanni de 'Medici and other engineers such as Claudio Cogorano and Alessandro Pieroni . Work began in January 1590 with the first stone throwing ceremony (10 January 1590) adapting two bastions of the buontalentiano project (that of San Francesco, facing north-east and that of Santa Barbara, towards the north) and ending in 1604 .
However, at the end of the seventeenth century the complex was largely dismantled, reducing it to the Bastion of St. Francis alone, in order to obtain new building areas within the city and dismantling about 2/3 of the original surface. The transformation led to the construction of a second defensive system adjacent to the fortress and to the protection of the New Venice district : the Forte San Pietro .
After being used as barracks and warehouse, during the Second World War the Fortezza Nuova was hit hard by aerial bombardments , which destroyed most of the internal constructions. Subsequently it hosted the displaced persons of the city center, to be transformed, later, in a large public park, with a suggestive view on the ditches and on the Piazza della Repubblica
The Fortezza Nuova rises in the middle of a large water basin and is connected to the city by a small bridge and by some mobile piers built in recent years. The curtain wall, substantially intact, has a very complex shape, with all the typical elements of the military architecture of the time, such as the concave hollow sides, the notched cannons and a very pronounced rivellino towards the water mirror in front.
The main entrance is protected by a defensive enclosure surmounted by characteristic corner towers: originally there was a drawbridge, then replaced by a masonry passage. From the enclosure, a tunnel leads to the retreat of the bastion and to the upper floors of the rampart, where there are the ruins of numerous service buildings, now placed inside a public park.

The Old Fortress of Livorno is a castle in Livorno, Italy. The Old Fortress is a successor building to a medieval fort built by the city of Pisa in the location of an older keep built by Countess Matilda of Tuscany in the 11th century.
The 11th century tower was incorporated inside the fort built by the Pisans. The castle has been described as a symbol of Medicean Livorno. The fort is located at the Medicean Darsena, or old dock of the port of Livorno, built by the Medici family. The ceremony proclaiming Livorno a city took place inside the fortress on 19 March 1606.
The plans to build the castle started with Cosimo I de' Medici in 1519 and the completion of the structure happened under the rule of Alessandro de' Medici in 1534. According to one source, the castle was built between 1521 and 1534 by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger is also reported by another source as the builder. The fortress contains the remains of the older fort built by Pisa and the 11th century tower constructed by Matilda. Matilda's tower, known in Italian as Mastio di Matilde, or Mastio della Contessa Matilde, has been restored.
The castle built by the Pisans in 1377 is called Quadratura dei Pisani and is believed to have been built by Puccio di Landuccio. The fortress church is dedicated to San Francesco. The old castle also contains the ruins of an ancient Roman castrum. The old fortress has three bastions and two main gates. The bastion closest to the land is called Ampolletta, the bastion nearest to the port is the Canaviglia and the third bastion, the Capitana, is at the northeastern side of the fort.
Decades after the construction of the old fort, Livorno's fortifications were further enhanced by building a new fortress. The new fortress was named Fortezza Nuova or New Fort. A canal system was built to connect the two forts. The builders of the canals were either Venetian or residents of Livorno. In modern times, boats of the Italian Coast Guard and customs police use a marina located in the main canal between the two forts.

Livorno is an Italian port city on the west coast of Tuscany. It's known for its seafood, Renaissance-era fortifications and modern harbor with a cruise ship port. Its central Terrazza Mascagni, a waterside promenade with checkerboard paving, is the city's main gathering place. The bastions of the 16th-century Fortezza Vecchia face the harbor and open onto Livorno's canal-laced Venezia Nuova quarter.
Tuscany's third-largest city is a quintessential port town with a colourful history and cosmopolitan heritage. Declared a free port in the 17th century, Livorno (Leghorn in English) attracted traders from across the globe, who brought with them new customs and habits, exotic goods, slaves and foreign forms of worship. The result was a city famed throughout Europe for its multiculturalism. Today its seafood is the best on the Tyrrhenian coast, its shabby historic quarter threaded with Venetian-style canals is full of character, and its elegant belle époque buildings offer evocative reminders of a prosperous past. An easy train trip from Florence, Pisa and Rome, it makes an understated but undeniably worthwhile stop on any Tuscan itinerary.
Livorno is a charming city located on the Western coast of Tuscany, on the Ligurian Sea and is considered one of the most important port of Italy. Don't expect to visit a quaint medieval town like many others in the region, since Livorno is one of the most modern cities in Tuscany, even if there are many archaeological remains that fortunately have not been destroyed during the World War II.
Like every port city, Livorno has always been a crossroads and melting pot of the world's cultures and owes its fascinating charm to this multiethnic aspect. Its origins date back maybe to prehistoric times, while many Etruscan and Roman remains have been found all closeby; during the XVIth century, the Medici Family contributed in the development of the city and its sea port, charging the renowed artist Buontalenti with the construction of a new fortified city with fosses and bastions, that gave Livorno those aspect that we can see today.
At the end of the XVIth century, Livorno began to house a large Jewish community - of traders principally - that grew more and more till it began one of the most important of Italy; today, you can visit the Synagogue (actually, you need to schedule your appointment to go inside), an impressive religious builiding that stands out from the traditional Italian architecture.
One of the most enchanting quarters of the city is La Venezia, a Venezia- style quarter with canals (dating back to the Medici era) crossing the all district, small bridges and boats that reminds one of the city in Northern Italy. It is situated in the historical center near the New Fortress and every Summer - usually on early August - houses one of the most important Summer events of the region, the Effetto Venezia. Music, theatre and cultural performances, food and entertainment for both children and adults give a special touch to the quarter that come alive until late night for a few days.
If you visit Livorno with kids, one of the attractions you should see is the Aquarium, with colorful fishes, turtles and many others: a funny break from the city seightseeings that your kids will surely appreciate. But one of most suggestive places is the Terrazza Mascagni, a great chessboard-style terrace made of many white and black tiles located along Viale Italia, separated from the sea by an elegant parapet with columns. The ideal venue for a romantic evening!
If you head to this Tuscan port city, you must try out its great seafood, there are many restaurants both in the historical center and along the lungomare that stretches south to the city, where rocks make space for a bit of beaches. Especially there, you'll find many nice and delicious places to eat at, which are informal and familiar and, above all, have reasonable prices.

Livorno is an important cruise port on the Italian west coast. It is the gateway to Tuscany. From Livorno it is only halv an hour drive to Pisa and about 80 minutes to Florence. But Livorno itself is also worth visiting.
