EXPLORING RHODES (GREECE), what to see, the magnificent MEDIEVAL WALLS ( ΡΟΔΟΣ) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to one of the most magnificent Greek islands, the island of Rhodes (ΡΟΔΟΣ) and let's admire the medieval walls and fortifications that surround the old city.
From 1309 to 1523 Rhodes, the largest island of the Dodecanese, was occupied by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem who had lost their last stronghold in Palestine, in Acre, in 1291. They transformed the island capital into a fortified city able to withstand sieges as terrible as those led by the Sultan of Egypt in 1444 and Mehmet II in 1480. Rhodes finally fell in 1522 after a six-month siege carried out by Suleyman II.
The fortifications of the town of Rhodes are shaped like a defensive crescent around the medieval town and consist mostly in a modern fortification composed of a huge wall made of an embankment encased in stone, equipped with scarp, bastions, moat, counterscarp and glacis. The portion of fortifications facing the harbour is instead composed of a crenellated wall. On the moles towers and defensive forts are found.
The defence of different portions of fortifications was assigned to different Langue (tongues) of Knights. The North face was under the rule of the Grand Master, then moving West and South the posts were held by the Langue of France and Alvernia, the Langue of Spain (Spanish and Portuguese), the Langue of Germany (English and German), and the Langue of Italy. Bastions and terrepleins still hold the name of the langue involved (e.g. Bastion of Italy, terreplein of Spain).
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

The Fortifications of Rhodes
Rhodes was occupied by the Knights Hospitaller from 1310 to 1522. In order to defend Rhodes from the sieges of the Ottoman Empire, the knights built strong fortifications around the town of Rhodes. The town was divided into eight posts, taken care respectively by the eight tongues of the Order of the Hospital. The eight posts of the town in clockwise order are: France, Portugal and Castile, Italy, Provence, England, Spain, Auvergne, Germany.
I walked around the old town of Rhodes at least five times to film this video, in order to present the eight posts of the town.

island of RHODES: EXPLORING AN ABANDONED ANCIENT FORT (GREECE) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - On a very hot day, let's go to Greece, let's visit the spectacular Greek island of Rhodes and let's make it to the village of Archangelos or Arhangelos which is one of the larger villages of Rhodes and has about 6,000 inhabitants (only Rhodes Town and Trianta have more inhabitants). It is 30 kilometers south of Rhodes Town on the east side of the island.
We are going to climb up to the castle of Saint John that was built by the Knights which stands on top of the mountain on the outskirts of the village. The castle was built after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 by the Knights of St John to protect the island against a possible Ottoman invasion. In the church of St. John church there are well preserved frescoes from the 14th century.

The Saint Paul's Gate Rhodes 2018. Fortifications of Rhodes 2018. Travel Vlog to Rhodes, Greece 2018
Rhodes The Gate of St. Paul`s - Old Town of Rhodes Island, Greece 2018. Gates and Walls Tour of Rhodes, Greece. In this video we will show you a part of the old city of Rhodes. The Saint Paul's Gate is a part of the fortifications on Rhodes. The fortress, protecting the city from the invasion of unexpected guests from the Aegean Sea, was built in the XIV century, by the Knights-Ioannites. The Master of that time, Pietre D'Obusson, ordered to fense the city from all sides with high stone walls. Ordered - done. The length of the fortress was very high, so I had to make several entries. In total there were 11 of them. Each of them was enclosed by a deep moat and gates on chains that dropped and rose on orders.
Near the gate of St. Paul preserved clock tower Nullak. Every day the watch languages were carried in it. Their obligations included watching the sea closely, from where any ill-wishers could appear at any time.
Today, the gates of St. Paul are a semblance of the former structure. Of course there are common features, but they are in a destroyed state.

Fortifications of Rhodes

Castle of Rhodes, Rhodes, South Aegean, Greece, Europe
The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, also known as the Kastello, is a medieval castle in the city of Rhodes, on the island of Rhodes in Greece. It is one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. The site was previously a citadel of the Knights Hospitaller that functioned as a palace, headquarters, and fortress. According to recent study, in the exact spot in which the palace exists today, there was the foundations of the ancient temple of the Sun-god 'Helios' and probably that was the spot where Colossus of Rhodes stood in the Antiquity. The palace was originally built in the late 7th century as a Byzantine citadel. After the Knights Hospitaller occupied Rhodes and some other Greek islands in 1309, they converted the fortress into their administrative centre and the palace of their Grand Master. In the first quarter of the 14th century, they repaired the palace and made a number of major modifications. The palace was damaged in the earthquake of 1481, and it was repaired soon afterwards. After the 1522 capture of the island by the Ottoman Empire, the palace was used as a command centre and fortress. The lower part of the palace was severely damaged by an ammunition explosion in 1856. As a result, many rooms in the first floor were destroyed. During the Italian rule of Rhodes, the Italian architect Vittorio Mesturino restored the damaged parts of the palace between 1937 and 1940. It became a holiday residence for the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III, and later for Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, whose name can still be seen on a large plaque near the entrance. On 10 February 1947, the Treaty of Peace with Italy, one of the Paris Peace Treaties, determined that the recently established Italian Republic would transfer the Dodecanese Islands to Greece. In 1948, Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese were transferred as previously agreed. The palace was then converted to a museum, and is today visited by the millions of tourists that visit Rhodes. In 1988, when Greece held the rotating presidency of the European Economic Community, Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou and the other leaders of the EEC held a meeting in the Palace.

RHODOS - GREECE 2019, CENTRUM OF RHODOS, RHODES
RHODOS - GREECE 2019, CENTRUM OF RHODOS, RHODES, Rhodes is the principal city and a former municipality on the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Rhodes, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. It has a population of approximately 90,000 in its metropolitan area. Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The citadel of Rhodes, built by the Hospitalliers, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, which in 1988 was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the city of Rhodes is an important Greek urban center and popular international tourist destination., The island of Rhodes is at a crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This has given the city and the island many different identities, cultures, architectures, and languages over its long history. Its position in major sea routes has given Rhodes a very rich history. The island has been inhabited since about 4000 BC, The city of Rhodes is situated in the north-east tip of the island and forms a triangle from north to south. The municipal unit has an area of 19.481 km2.It is the smallest municipal unit of the island in terms of land area and the largest in population. It borders the Aegean Sea to the north, the east and the west and with the municipalities of Ialysos and Kallithea in the south., The Knights Hospitallers captured and established their headquarters on Rhodes when they left Cyprus[6][7] after the persecution of the Knights Templar in 1307. Pope Clement V confirmed the Hospitallers possession of the Island in 1309. The Knights remained on the Island for the next two centuries.
In 1444, the Mamluk fleet of Egypt laid a siege to Rhodes, but the Knights aided by the Burgundian naval commander Geoffroy de Thoisy beat off the Muslim attack.
After the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 the Ottoman Empire began a rapid expansion and in 1480 Sultan Mehmet launched an invasion of Rhodes commanded by Mesic Pasha. The defenders repelled Turkish attacks from both landward and seaward sides and the invaders left the Island in defeat. The defeat halted a concurrent invasion of the Italian peninsula by Ottoman forces and prevented possible Muslim incursion and control of Western Europe.
After the Ottoman defeat in 1480 the Knights Grand Master, Pierre d'Aubusson, oversaw the strengthening of the cities over the next few decades. By the time of his death in 1521 Rhodes possessed the strongest fortifications of any Christian Bastion in the World. The Knights continued naval attacks launched from Rhodes on Muslim merchants until 1522 when the newly enthroned Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent led a second Siege of Rhodes in 1522.
The vastly outnumbered Knights made a spirited defense of the city and inflicted heavy casualties upon the Ottoman besiegers. In December 1522 the Knights and Suleiman came to terms and the Knights were allowed to leave the city with all the wealth they could carry, in return there would be no retribution upon the inhabitants of the city and they would be allowed to continue to freely practice Christianity. On January 1, 1523 the Knights departed from the island, leaving it to Ottoman control.

Acropolis of Rhodes
The acropolis of Rhodes was located at the western and highest part of the city.
It was not fortified, as was the case with old acropolises, but it constituted a monumental zone with sanctuaries, large temples, public buildings and underground sites of worship. It was abundant in fields and woods, according to the description of orator Aelius Aristides (2nd century AD).
The monuments of the acropolis date back to the Hellenistic and late Hellenistic period.
The buildings were built in a staggered manner at different levels on specially-formed terraces, with strong retaining walls. The spirit of Hellenistic architecture in the acropolis of Rhodes is perfectly expressed through the combination of natural beauty with artificial interventions.
The first excavations were carried out during the Italian occupation of the island (1912-1945).
From 1946 onwards, the Greek Archaeological Service has carried out excavations and has conducted maintenance works at the site of the Temple of Pythian Apollo, which sustained large damages from the 2nd World War bombardments, and because of the weight of the cannons that had been placed there. In 1996 renovation works began on the Temple itself and the Nymphaeums.
The acropolis has yet to be fully excavated. There is an archaeological zone of about 309 acres that has been excluded from modern construction, with a view to the continuation of excavations for the purpose of revealing the brilliant ancient city of Rhodes.
