SINJSKA ALKA (the battle of Sinj),CROATIA
Sinj is a Croatian city which was 1715.attacked by 60 000 soldiers of Ottoman empire. Defenders of Sinj retreated intro it's fort, about 700 of them escaped Ottoman killings. Croats prayed to Holy Mary to save them. As a reminder for this great victory, ALKA is beeing held every year.

Top view from Old Town, Sinj, Croatia
Old Town comprises utvrda/fortress Grad and the Križni put (walk of suffering) installation, and is located on a hill. The view there is spectacular and, behind the church, you can find a simple outdoor pulpit.

For the second year in a row Piket airfield hosts the Sinj Air Show on the 20th of August 2016. On this beautiful saturday, 4000+ spectators enjoyed in a impressive 3 hour flying display. This year's flying display featured helicopter parachute jumps, Cessna 172 formation flying, glider action, Wings of Storm aerobatic display team and more. New additions this year are the Flying Bulls with their Cessna 337D Super Skymaster, Croatian Air Force Bell JetRanger and Zlin, Croatian Police Agusta AB-212, Eurocopter EC-135 and a AutoGyro Europe Cavalon gyrocpter. But there was the whole Galeb controversy that nearly canceled the air show one day before! More on that below.
One big Thank You to all who made this air show possible, one Massive! Thank You to Branimir for that amazing cockpit footage.

G-2 Galeb did not participate in the air show due to a small loud group of ignorant people who apparently have a higher authority than the President of Croatia and the Minister of Defence of Croatia. The organisers of the air show were downright blackmailed. A shameful sight that happened one day before the air show. This particular G-2 served most of its life in Zemunik (Croatia) after that it was sent to a museum in Serbia in parts, and in the end it was bought and rebuilt in civilian colors by a civilian pilot.
Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed :)
concentric Križni put (Way of the Cross) statues, Stari Grad (Old Town), Sinj, Croatia
I went to Stari Grad because I wanted to know if the statue at the top of the hill, which you can see from a distance, was Mary. Then I figured I was going into a park, having no idea about the Križni put installation or that the experience of it would take me concentrically around the hill; if you go higher, you'll reach the old church and, yes, the statue of Mary, with remnants of utvrda/fortress Grad and great views of Sinj.
Because of the concentric design, though, the individual statues are numbered. However, there are supposed to be 14 in total; but four are missing. I have no idea why that is; maybe it's an incomplete work. Hopefully, I'll get more info. about that later.
This is my second Križni put experience. I like the art better here, but I think there's inconsistency with the overall mood of the pieces. Also, the absence of several sculptures created breaks in the continuity of the subject matter.
Interestingly, though, the *Town of Sinj: Tourist Guide* (n.d.) included info. that the stations were sculptured by the most prominent Croatian sculptures (p. 14); but I think only the titles of their works are included on the bases. So, who are the actual artists?

Croatian Knights Game - ALKA (Alkar Tonci Beslic u sridu)
Croatian Knights Game - ALKA (Alkar Tonci Beslic u sridu)
The Alka is held to commemorate the victory of the outnumbered defenders of the old city of Sinj, against the multiples times more numerous and stronger Ottoman army in 1715.
Around 700 defenders held out against a siege of the Sinj fort, and according to historical sources, with their courage, fighting spirit and determination, the resisted the Ottoman army, which according to the same sources, had up to 60,000 soldiers.
The legend says that the defenders were helped in their battle with the appearance of the blessed Virgin Mary, so the defenders gathered gold and framed her picture with it.
In honour of the great victory, the citizens of Sinj, with permission from the Venetian authorities, founded the knight games, Alka, a unique competition of jousting knights in Europe, similar to knight tournaments from the middle ages, which has been kept as a tradition for nearly three centuries. According to sources, similar games have been held in Makarska and in other places in Dalmatia and Istria, but it is the Alka that is of great value for surviving until today, and has become a world attraction, because it has been held with unchanged rules, in Sinj, for 292 years galatasaray istanbul Turkey ultrAslan Turkiye ŞAMPİYON muhteşem UEFA kupasi Fenerbahce besitkas slaven hirvatistan alka alkar sinj zagora junak sinjska croatia hrvatska brnaze imotski hrvace vinovo donje sedramic lecevica dicmo runovici csi drnia trilj tonci beslic petar tomasevic tino radanovic

This is Dalmatia!
We present to you the first episode of the Makarska Riviera, with the starting point - the town of Makarska in Discover Croatia - Exploring Route series. Even the weather served us, we were able to show clearly how Dalmatia looks like. Wine, prosciutto, olives and song!
This is Dalmatia!, said Ashley Colburn during a boat ride in the Makarska Riviera.
Sinjska alka by Marko Kulić
A historical fact is that Mustafa-Paša Čelić and his 60000 soldiers came over to the Republic of Venice territory all the way from Bosnia in order to conquer Croatian cities of: Drniš, Vrlika, Sinj as well as some smaller fortresses and villages in the area .Firstly, he attacked the city of Drniš, but he could not conquer it, then he moved on to Vrlika and took the city. Its people were told, if they had surrendered, their lives would have been spared. Anyway, Mustafa killed most of them afterwards. Otok, the village near Sinj, was also attacked.A Franciscan friar StipanVučemilović escaped with around 260 people to an island near Otok. They were trying to defend themselves as hard as they could, but didn’t make it. When Turskih soldiers stopped attacking, Stipan Vučemilović escaped to Sinj and told the other priest what had happened in Otok.
Sinj was being attacked for days, a lot of soldiers as well as citizens were killed .The Ottoman’s army had no mercy . One of the strongest assaults happened on August 14th,when the walls of Sinj were broken out and the defenders could hardly resist...

Remarkable natural setting of Dalmatian Zagora will speak for itself. It certainly caught the eye of the producers of the hit TV series Game of Thrones (GOT) for a reason. By visiting the Klis fortress You will have the opportunity to see the settings of the GOT’s city of Meereen.
ITINERARY
Departure from Split at 8.30 am. Pick up at the place of your accommodation. Either with a vehicle or your guide will meet you there, depending on the accessibility of the location. Driving from Split towards the impressive medieval Kliss fortress. Due to its location on a pass that separates the two mountain: Mosor and Kozjak, the fortress served as a major source of defense throughout the history, especially against the Ottoman Empire, and has been a key crossroad between the Mediterranean belt and the Balkan rear. Looking back into the etymology of the name Klis, from a Greek word Kleisa meaning the key, it certainly got the name that fits it right- the key to Dalmatia.
The tradition of the knights’ tournament called Alka dating from 18 th century is kept until today and held every year in August in Sinj celebrating the anniversary of Sinj’s victory over Turkish invaders.

Rich in culture and age- old tradition Sinj is best known as the town of Croatian Medieval knights called Alkars. The tournament itself is under UNESCO nonmaterial world heritage list.
