Suomenlinna (Finnish) or Sveaborg (Swedish), until 1918 Viapori (Finnish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands (Kustaanmiekka, Susisaari, Iso-Mustasaari, Pikku-Mustasaari, Länsi-Mustasaari and Långören) and which now forms part of the city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site and popular with tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site. Originally named Sveaborg (Fortress of Svea), or Viapori as called by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is also known by its original name.
The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism. The general responsibility for the fortification work was given to Augustin Ehrensvärd. The original plan of the bastion fortress was strongly influenced by the ideas of Vauban, the foremost military engineer of the time, and the principles of star fort style of fortification, albeit adapted to a group of rocky islands.
In addition to the island fortress itself, seafacing fortifications on the mainland would ensure that an enemy would not acquire a beach-head from which to stage attacks. The plan was also to stock munitions for the whole Finnish contingent of the Swedish Army and Royal Swedish Navy there. In the Finnish War the fortress surrendered to Russia on May 3, 1808, paving the way for the occupation of Finland by Russian forces in 1809.
Suomenlinna is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Helsinki as well as a popular picnicking spot for the city's inhabitants. On a sunny summer day the islands, and in particular the ferries, can get quite crowded. In 2009, a record 713,000 people visited Suomenlinna, most between May and September. A number of museums exist on the island, as well as the last surviving Finnish submarine, Vesikko.
Suomenlinna has always been much more than just a part of Helsinki — it is a town within the town. There are about 900 permanent inhabitants on the islands, and 350 people work there year round. This is one of the features that makes Suomenlinna unique: the fortress is not simply a museum but a living community.
There is a minimum-security penal labor colony (Finnish: työsiirtola) in Suomenlinna, whose inmates work on the maintenance and reconstruction of the fortifications. Only volunteer inmates who pledge non-use of controlled substances are accepted to the labour colony.
For the general public, Suomenlinna is served by ferries all year, and a service tunnel supplying heating, water and electricity was built in 1982. From the beginning of the 1990s, the tunnel was modified so that it can also be used for emergency transport.
Suomenlinna has been known as an avant-garde location for culture. In the mid-1980s the Nordic Arts Centre was established on the island. Several buildings have been converted into artists' studios, which are let by the administration at reasonable rates. During the summer there is an art school for children. The performances of the Suomenlinna summer theatre regularly draw full houses.

Suomenlinna Fortress ( Sveaborg in swedish ) as just a short ferry ride away from the historic city of Helsinki Finland. Renowned for its historic integrity, and architectural beauty Soumenlinna is one of the top sights in Helsinki and a Must visit while in Finland.
Suomenlinna is accessible only by water. A ferry service runs from the Market Square to Suomenlinna throughout the year. During the summer season, a water bus is also available. The guest harbour in the middle of Suomenlinna handles visitors arriving by their own boats.
The trip to Suomenlinna takes 15–20 minutes and offers magnificent views of Helsinki and the surroundings from the sea. Although our visit was during the Summer, the cold winter months, offer an incredible ice covered water experience that shouldn't be missed.
Suomenlinna fortress broke ground in 1784 after the Swedish owned territory had been in constant conflict with its Russian neighbors. While the fortress took little part in actual battles, it did provide a number of ships to support the naval efforts having been equipped with a dry dock during construction. Suomenlinna finally feel to the Russians in 1808 after only small skirmishes. The Swedish surrender is still a mystery.
During the Russian Era, Suomenlinna acted as a fortress to protect the second jewel of the Soviets, St Petersburg. It actually saw very little action until the mid 19th century, and by that time had fallen into severe decay. The only real wartime action Suomenlinna faced was during the Crimean war of 1853 between Russia and Turkey and was in no real position to defend against such an attack.
Finally, after Finland's Independence, the Finnish reclaimed the fortress in 1918 and gave it its current and widely accepted name: Suomenlinna. Repairs have been ongoing since then and the fortress itself has acted as a historical tourist attraction since then.

Tour UNESCO Suomenlinna Sea Fortress Helsinki, Finland
Suomenlinna is accessible only by ferry. It was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and base for the Fleet. Work begun in 1748. Lots to see, lots of walking on uneven paths through snow and mud and we didn't do it justice on a cold, nasty winter day but still worth doing!

Ferry ride to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress from Helsinki, Finland including touring around the island
On a lovely sunny afternoon we enjoyed a ferry ride from Helsinki, Finland to Suomenlinna visiting a Sea Fortress, wandering around the island and enjoying black licorice ice cream as part of our walking tour around the island. With a couple of days in Helsinki under our belt, we wanted to explore around some of the outer areas - including a trip a nearby island. Meeting up with Audrey's friend who is studying in Finland for the day, we ventured off to Suomenlinna, a historical maritime fortress and one of Finland's most popular sights. The brief ferry was as comfortable a ride I've ever been on before. With temperatures reaching the low 20's I felt a refreshing breeze against my face as the gentle rays of sun penetrate my skin.

The 15 minute ferry ride also afforded me an opportunity to photograph Helsinki from a different vantage point.
We felt extremely lucky to have delayed this trip considering we had planned this trip the day before when the weather was overcast and rainy.
Upon arriving this once virtually barren island was picturesque with its wild meadows, lush gardens and natural cliffs. In many ways this quaint little getaway reminded me of Prince Edward Island in Canada.
Given the many cozy cafes, restaurants, parks, fortifications and canons on this small island, it's no wonder Suoemenlinna attracting more than 700, 000 visitors annually!
Suomenlinna, a UNESCO Heritage site, (formerly known as Sveaborg in Swedish or Viapori in Finnish) is an inhabited sea fortress which is actually now considered a part of Helsinki. Popular with both foreigners and tourists alike, its the perfect destination for a lazy afternoon picnic, bite of ice cream or a picturesque destination for a wedding.
Literally, 'Suomenlinna' translates as 'Castle of Finland' and was once a former strategic fortress used to thwart off Russian expansionism.
We enjoyed just randomly wandering around the island marveling at how peaceful and serene the pace of life was compared to Helsinki.
We spotted several couples getting married, children playing under the shade and couples holding hands while sharing ice cream.
By far our favorite activity was just sitting down to enjoy a picnic in a picturesque setting overlooking some local boats in a quieter remote area of the island overlooking a rocky spot by the sea.
For those seeking a summertime day trip from Helsinki, I highly recommend visiting this UNESCO heritage site.
This is the kind of destination where planning several hours to leisurely stroll around the island - with an extended picnic with family and/or friends - is the perfect way to spend a summer day in Finland:

Suomenlinna Island and Fortress Helsinki
Suomenlinna Island is a must see when in Helsinki. A ferry from the market square takes you there in about 20 minutes. On the island, there are a couple of cafes for lunch. Walking around the island, you can see a submarine, fortifications, a dry dock, and, if you can brave the fierce winds, the Baltic Sea.

Built in the second half of the 18th century by Sweden on a group of islands located at the entrance of Helsinki's harbour, this fortress is an especially interesting example of European military architecture of the time.

If you arrive to Helsinki by cruise ship (at least the very unglamorous Viking Line that takes you from Stockholm to Helsinki) you are likely to get a good look at Suomenlinna (Sveaborg in Swedish). As a kid I always made sure to get a glimpse of the red submarine from World War II on display when coming to Helsinki. The fort is a great destination for an outing when in Helsinki, whether you like history and take a tour / visit the museums or just want a great place for a picnic and an unusual stroll.

Situated on a group of islands off Helsinki, Suomenlinna was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and a base for the Archipelago Fleet. Work on the fortress began in 1748.
In 1808, after just minor skirmishes, the Commandant of the fortress decided to surrender the fortress to the Russians. The reasons for surrender remain an unsolved mystery.
Finland declared independence on 6 December 1917, but the fortress was still under the command of Russians troops for some time It was not transferred under the administration of the Finnish government until in the spring 1918 during the Finnish Civil War.
Towards the end of the war, the Whites set up a prison camp for Red prisoners, up to 8,000 of them. In the prison camp, Red prisoners were executed and some died of diseases due to the poor conditions in the fortress. The last prisoners were released in March 1919.
When the Winter War broke out in 1939, the forces stationed on Suomenlinna included anti-aircraft and artillery units. The fortress was a base for the Finnish submarine fleet.
Suomenlinna was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1991. The fortress has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Finland. In addition, Suomenlinna is one of Helsinki’s districts, a home to approximately 800 residents and a workplace for about 400 people.

We spent a fun day at Suomenlinna. Good choice when traveling with a budget in Finland. After Suomenlinna we ate at Saigon house, there you get very good authentic vietnamese food, located at eerikinkatu 9, helsinki. Food wasn't the cheapest you can get; in the mid-range, but tasty!
