Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, Sendai, Japan (14-18 March 2015)
The Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction is a once-every-decade event that will shape the world of the next 10 to 15 years.
More than 8000 Heads of State, Ministers, mayors, CEOs and members of the Civil Society are expected to attend the Conference and to adopt a new framework for action that will make the planet and its people more resilient against disasters.
The development road map in the year ahead has four crucial stops. First, in March, in Sendai, Japan, the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction can set a course to greater resilience. Second, in July in Addis Ababa, we can agree on financing and investments that are crucial for growth and for the credibility of the new development path. Third, in September here in New York, we can adopt a bold, new and integrated agenda for sustainable development. And fourth, in December in Paris, we can ensure a meaningful, ambitious and universal climate change agreement. said the UN Secretary-General (on 8 January).

Hatsu-uri New Year's first sale in Sendai, Japan
Sendai is adorned with decorations for the holiday, decked out and festive.
It's time for hatsu-uri in Japan. Almost all retailers open in early January (usually the 2nd or 3rd) to hold huge sales on merchandise. The biggest part of the tradition is the fukubukuro, lucky grab-bags of merchandise from the previous year on clearance with cut-rate prices. Some are still sold blindly, without the buyer knowing specifically what's inside; many others clearly label their contents in a break with the original custom.
Sendai, though, is particularly famous for an extra tradition where extravagant prizes are given out with smaller purchases for the first set number of hatsu-uri customers. Normally this is disallowed by Japanese laws aimed at preventing dumping, but the old Sendai domain has a centuries-old tradition and gets a special exception for three days in January.
