Fossil Falls California 2016 01 20
Fossil Falls California (Exploring date 2016-01-20)
The Fossil Falls is a unique geological feature, located in the Coso Range of California in the United States. Volcanic activity in the mountain range, along with meltwater from glaciers in the nearby Sierra Nevada, played a role in the creation of the falls. They are located near Little Lake, Inyo County, California, 1.0 mi (1.6 km) off US 395 (at a red cinder cone called Red Hill) on Cinder Road to Red Hill, with signs to Fossil Falls. ~Wikipedia

MUST VISIT LOCATION: the truly weird, stunning and quite unique Fossil Falls in California, USA.
I have had the luck of seeing natural rock formations all over the world from Australia to Iceland and this relatively small site took my breath away. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area...or diverting to add it to your itinerary.
The fossil falls are located near Little Lake, Inyo County, California, about 1 mi (1.6 km) off US 395 (along a bumpy dirt road) to a small car park and then a 10 minute, 300m clamber over a dull, boring dirt landscape. Nothing can prepare you for the falls.
The aren't just black, in contrast to the surrounding soil and rock but they are contorted and if confronted at night in torchlight quite scary looking.
Unfortunately I was on my way to LAX to return home and couldn't risk spending too much time here. I have no doubt that any traveler between Los Angels/San Diego and Death Valley following this route should stop here and take a look. Mind blowing stuff.

The REAL Desert Dogs, Fossil Falls
A review of of the geology and archaeology of the area around Little Lake and Fossil Falls, in California's Mojave Desert. The area was shaped by volcanic activity from 400,000 years to approximately 10,000 years. And for 20,000 years, people have came and went, populating the area from when it was a lush, green environment into recent history, when it is a harsh, arid desert.
The Desert Dogs find petroglyphs and numerous chippings, and even visit one of the oldest archaeological sites in the United States; the Stall Site.
Owens Lake California
A visit to the amazing vast dry landscape of Owens Dry Lake California in the shadow of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. Diversion by LA in the early part of the 20th century has resulted in a mostly dry lakebed. The lake is currently a large salt flat whose surface is made of a mixture of clay, sand, and a variety of minerals including halite, burkeite, mirabilite, thenardite, and trona. In wet years, these minerals form a chemical soup in the form of a small brine pond within the dry lake. When conditions are right, bright pink halophilic (salt-loving) archaea spread across the salty lakebed. Also, on especially hot summer days when ground temperatures exceed 150° F (66 °C), water is driven out of the hydrates on the lakebed creating a muddy brine. More commonly, periodic winds stir up noxious alkali dust storms that carry away as much as four million tons (3.6 million metric tons) of dust from the lakebed each year, causing respiratory problems in nearby residents.[6][7] The dust includes carcinogens such as cadmium, nickel and arsenic.[8]
Owens Lake is a mostly dry lake in the Owens Valley on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in Inyo County, California. It is about 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Lone Pine, California. Unlike most dry lakes in the Basin and Range Province that have been dry for thousands of years, Owens held significant water until 1913, when much of the Owens River was diverted into the Los Angeles Aqueduct, causing Owens Lake to desiccate by 1926.[2] Today, some of the flow of the river has been restored, and the lake now contains some water. Nevertheless, as of 2013, it is the largest single source of dust pollution in the United States.

US Route 395 California Southbound
The Lifestyle Of An OTR Truck Driver
This is US Route 395 in California. I just wanted to give an example of the type of scenery an OTR truck driver sees from day to day.
In the U.S. state of California, U.S. Route 395 (US 395) is a 557-mile (896 km) route which traverses from Interstate 15 near the southern city limits of Hesperia, north to the Oregon state line in Modoc County near Goose Lake. The route clips into Nevada, serving the cities Carson City and Reno, before returning to California.
Prior to truncation, US 395 served the metropolitan areas of San Diego and San Bernardino. The highway serves as a connection to the Los Angeles area for the communities of the Owens Valley, Mammoth Lakes and Mono Lake. The highway is used as an access for both the highest point in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney, and the lowest point in North America, Death Valley.
The corridor has been used since the California gold rush, and before numbering was known by several names including El Camino Sierra.

How to use a campsite in California - Pinyon Flat Campsite - softypapa adventures
California offers some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery and landscape on the planet. Scattered throughout the states are numerous campsites of every style and suitable to a wide variety of interests. From private campsites such as KOA (Kampground Of America), well maintained (and expensive) National Park camps to the many primitive sites scattered throughout National Forests. The most spartan sites are the non-sites many rugged adventurers make for themselves within lands managed by the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM). In this video I'll show you how to use a self-service National Forest camp. This site is a Pinyon Flat campsite off highway 74 in California's Santa Rosa-San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Road Trip - Bishop to Los Angeles - 2019
Bishop (formerly Bishop Creek) is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. Though Bishop is the only incorporated city and the largest populated place in Inyo County, the county seat is located in Independence. Bishop is located near the northern end of the Owens Valley,[5] at an elevation of 4,150 feet (1,260 m). The town was named after Bishop Creek, flowing out of the Sierra Nevada; the creek was named after Samuel Addison Bishop, a settler in the Owens Valley. Located near numerous tourist attractions, Bishop is a major resort town; the town is a commercial and residential center, while many vacation destinations in the Sierra Nevada are located nearby.
The population of the city was 3,879 at the 2010 census, up from 3,575 at the 2000 census. The population of the built-up zone containing Bishop is much larger, however. More than 14,500 people live in a compact area that includes Bishop, West Bishop, Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek, and the Bishop Reservation. It is by far the largest settlement in Inyo County.
A number of western films were shot in Bishop, including movies starring John Wayne, Charlton Heston and Joel McCrea.
Enjoy my trip into the Sunset on Route 395.

Honors 380 Trip Manzanar National Historic Site in California
In early 1942, the United States government commenced the confinement of nearly 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent -- citizens and non-citizens alike. Political, economic, legal, sociological, cultural, psychological, literary, and historical lenses were utilized in this course's examination of this dark chapter in American life. The backgrounds and interests of the students in the course played major roles in shaping our inquiry. Students in this course traveled to Little Tokyo in Los Angeles and the Manzanar National Historic Site in California, this is a video summary of that trip.
