Ammonite Lyme Regis
See us at Book a private fossil walk with us (when we are available) and we can show you the Jurassic Coast. The beach East of Lyme Regis is good for fossil hunting - at low tide. Check the tide times before you head off on a fossil walk. Always read and obey the caution signs that are on the way down to the fossil collecting areas on the beach. The cliffs are very dangerous so keep away from them! They are liable to fall suddenly and without warning. This video shows how to find a fossil along the Jurassic Coast using the best tools - your eyes! Many people come to Lyme Regis and say they would like to find a fossil to take home, if not for them then for a friend. You need some sturdy gloves and wellington boots with good grips for a fossil hunting walk along the Jurassic Coast. The ammonites preserved in fools gold are best left soaking in a bucket of fresh water when you get home. This gets the salt out of them. The fresh water should be changed over the three or four days you have them soaking. Then leave the fossils to dry in the air for three to four weeks so they are ready to varnish. I mix clear picture varnish with matt varnish 50/50 to varnish them all over with. Some species of ammonite last better than others. They look good varnished and really come up well. A little bit of Jurassic Magic from the World Heritage Coastline! Read and obey the fossil collecting code of conduct before setting off fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast, this is available online.Always wear safety spectacles and sturdy gloves if you are doing any hammering of the grey layered limestone rocks.

Study Abroad: Fossil Walk at Lyme Regis, Jurassic Coast
Lyme Regis is a coastal town in Dorset, England. The site is a part of the Jurassic World Heritage and the town is noted for fossils found on its beaches and in the cliffs. Many of the earliest discoveries of dinosaurs were made in the area around Lyme Regis. Mary Anning found many of them.

Lyme Regis Fossil Hunting After Huge Storm
I've just got back from 6 days fossil collecting at Lyme Regis and Charmouth. Luckily as we got there a big storm had hit the beaches called storm Brandon. There were plenty of finds if you're willing to get wet. Lots of ichthyosaur, plesiosaur and ammonites. It was great hunting at the same place Mary Anning collected fossils.

Lyme Regis Fossil Festival || Day Out With Kids || Sarah & Squirrel Vlog
We went to Lyme Regis for the FOSSIL FESTIVAL and had a fantastic time full of children hands on activities, beach play, ice cream and extremely variable weather.
Living in Exeter not too far from many of the Jurassic Coast spots here in the South West of England we are very lucky to have great opportunities for fantastic, active day trips as a family, but the Fossil Festival is something that I urge families to give a go!
Usually over the beginning of May spanning 3 days, you can hear talks, see demos, get involved with workshops, go on fossiling tours and walks, and thats just stuff for grown ups!
For children there are endless performances, hands on opportunities to play with local enthusiasts, story tellers, great campaigns who want to inspire children, fossils to touch and feel, junior palaeontology play with guides who can answer questions and so much more.
Take a peek and plan next years trip!

Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis - Beyond Fossils!
Geologize's Dr Haydon Mort and his boys takes a look at just some of stories in the rocks of Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK.
Lyme Regis is a World Heritage Site, famous for its fossils, especially Ammonites. But, with a few tricks (and licks!) a richer story can be told. Learn how to find evidence of life interacting with the ancient sea-floor, how to reach rocks high up the cliff and even how to tell how much clay is in the rock.

FOSSIL HUNTING - On Charmouth Beach in Dorset
Beginners and learners welcome on this guide to the first trip hunting for #Fossils in 2019. Only some Belemnite fragments and a vertebrae. No Ammonites which is disappointing. Must wait for the next cliff fall ;). #FossilHunting in Dorset is great fun and whether you got to #Charmouth beach to do it or at the nearby #MonmouthBeach at nearby #LymeRegis you won't be disappointed.
I don't think I have ever been to either location with my family and come away empty handed. Sure, sometimes the fossil finds aren't mindblowing, but to engage your children and to get them interested in the natural world (as well as exercise) is truly a great thing.
A lot of local businesses provide information, equipment (if you need it... bring your own hammers and buckets) and also local fossil guides if you need that extra insight into this fascinating hobby.
Paddy Howe (who is based in Lyme Regis) is amongst the best! He is also very patient with young families. See the links below for more information:
