Fotu La - Srinagar to Leh Bicycle Tour
22 Aug 2012: Fotu La is not Tofu Lah
First half of today cycling up Namika La was quite easy, mostly due to the paved asphalt road, but the situation deteriorate quickly on the second half of the day cranking up Fotu La, our first pass above 4000m.
The wind was pretty strong on the way up the zigzag switch back, so you got both tailwind and headwind equally :)
We also unable to eat/refill water due to the Hiniskut (3655m) village was kinda abandoned, we were supposed to have lunch there, but.....we couldn't find any shop, it was like a disappeared town.
Tho the climb was tough, but the downhill on asphalt (about 5km off the La) was one of the best downhill I ever had, newly paved road, almost no traffics. I recorded a 55.9km/h max, dare not go faster with fully loaded weight :p it was really Syiok ride zoom down to Lamayuru.

We stayed in Sonamarg in Kashmir for 2 days and trust my words sonamarg is one of the top beautiful place in entire Kashmir, It is a small village situated in middle of some of the biggest snow caped mountains and this village is accessible for only 6 months a year. there are several glaciers but we visited only handful of them.
First we visited Thajiwas glacier where Climax scene of biggest block buster movie 'Bajrangi Bhaijan has been shot. and on second day we visted Zero point of kashmir where tempreture remains below zero almost throughout the year.

Zoji La, Mountain Pass, Srinagar Leh Highway, Jammu & Kashmir,, India
34°16′44″N 75°28′19″E
Zoji La is a high mountain pass in India, Kashmir, located on the Indian National Highway 1D between Srinagar and Leh in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range. Though often referred to as Zojila Pass in the foreign press, the correct English translation is Zoji Pass or simply Zojila, since the suffix 'La' itself means pass in several Himalayan languages. The usage of the word La can also be seen in the Khardung La, Fotu La, Namika La and Pensi La etc. In modern-day North Indian languages, 'La' and 'Darra' are both used interchangeably to mean a mountain pass.
Zoji La is 9 km (5.6 mi) from Sonamarg and provides a vital link between Ladakh and Kashmir. It runs at an elevation of approximately 3,528 meters (11,575 ft), and is the second highest pass after Fotu La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It is often closed during winter, though the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to extend traffic to most parts of the year. The Beacon Force unit of the BRO is responsible for clearing and maintenance of the road during winter.
During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, Zoji La was seized by Pakistani raiders in 1948 in their campaign to capture Ladakh. The pass was captured by Indian forces on 1 November in a daring assault code-named Operation Bison, which achieved success primarily due to the surprise use of tanks, then the highest altitude at which tanks had operated in combat in the world.

Leh to Srinagar by Road :
The 434 KM long Srinagar – Leh Highway is like a lifeline in the form of road connectivity between Leh – Ladakh and rest of India via Kashmir Valley. Srinagar – Leh Highway, also known as National Highway – 1D (NH – 1D), is the most reliable and one of the only two roads to reach Ladakh by road.
Kargil - Drass - Zoji la pass - Sonamarg - Kangan - Ganderbal - Srinagar. The highway runs alongside the Indus River and through some extremely harsh and barren terrain including the three high mountain passes named Zozi La (3528 Mtrs), Namki La (3815 Mtrs) and Fotu La (4108 Mtrs). In any case, Srinagar – Leh highway offers some breathtaking landscapes ornamented by various historical and cultural constructions.
A lovely trip through sonmarg to Srinagar via Zojila pass. Amazing sceneries, must visit at least once. The road from Kargil to Srinagar is very scenic. Distance between Srinagar to Kargil is 209 km by Road. If you start your journey from Kargil early enough, but there are unknowns like traffic conditions and landslides, especially at the notorious Zojila, so be sure to start really early and hope for the best!

Driving on the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH 1D)
National Highway 1D (NH 1D), also known as Srinagar-Leh Highway, is a National Highway entirely within the state of Jammu & Kashmir in North India that connects Srinagar to Leh in Ladakh. It is one of the only two roads that connect Ladakh with the rest of India, the other being Leh-Manali Highway. The Srinagar-Leh Highway was declared as National Highway in 2006.
The old Central Asian trade route Srinagar-Leh-Yarkand was also known as the Treaty Road, after a commercial treaty signed in 1870[3] between Maharaja Ranbir Singh and Thomas Douglas Forsyth.
For most part, NH 1D runs through extremely treacherous terrain and follows the historic trade route along the Indus River, thus giving modern travelers a glimpse of villages which are historically and culturally important. The road generally remains open for traffic from early June to mid-November. The total length of NH 1 is 422 km (262 mi).
The two highest passes on NH 1D include Fotu La at 4,108 m (13,478 ft) elevation and Zoji La at 3,528 m (11,575 ft) elevation.
Between Fotu La pass and Leh, a government checkpoint is stationed in the village of Khalatse.
Dras, located some 170 km (110 mi) from Srinagar at elevation of 3,249 m (10,659 ft), is the first major village over the Zoji La pass. The village is inhabited by a population of mixed Kashmiri and Dard origins, having a reputation of being the second coldest permanent inhabited spot in the world after Siberia, with temperatures dropping to −45 °C (−49 °F).

It is one of the only two roads that connect Ladakh with the rest of India, the other being Leh-Manali Highway. The Srinagar-Leh Highway was declared as National Highway in 2006.
Heavy snowfall on the highest passes can block traffic, cutting Leh from Srinagar for some six months each year. During springtime, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) plows snow and repairs damages caused by landslides. Zoji La pass received reportedly some 18 m (59 ft) of snowfall in 2008.
For most part, NH 1D runs through extremely treacherous terrain and follows the historic trade route along the Indus River, thus giving modern travelers a glimpse of villages which are historically and culturally important. Tiger Hill or Point 4660 is a mountain in the Drass-Kargil area of Jammu & Kashmir, India. It is one of the highest peaks in the area and was the subject of the infamous battle during the 1999 India-Pakistan Kargil War. Its recapture was one of the most important objectives for Indian forces during the Kargil War.
Since Tiger Hill is the highest peak in the sector, the Pakistani forces who held the peak could easily see the military headquarters of the 56 Brigade, the main Indian force in charge of the area. The Tiger Hill overlooks the National Highway 1D (India), a strategic root way to Siachen Glacier and connects Srinagar to Leh in Ladakh which enabled the Pakistanis to watch the Srinagar-Leh Highway, the main supply route of the Kargil Sector, and relay information of troop and supply movements to their superiors. They can easily direct fire on a 25 km stretch of the national highway.
