30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are in Nelson city and we have been recommended to visit the cheap and cheerful Founders Heritage Park in Nelson. It’s only around NZ$7 to visit, so why not?!
Founders Park in Nelson is set up like an old European settler town from around 100 years ago in New Zealand. We enter under a giant windmill and see mock-up houses of early New Zealand settlers. There are phone booths to use, old printing houses and a general store made showing old New Zealand items. We are then surprised to see a real bakery inside the mock bakery. There are real businesses operating in Founders Heritage Park in Nelson! We get ourselves some cookies from Ruk n’ Co and continue exploring Founders Park.
Fire station, hospital, bus station: it’s all here! After visiting a mini museum about New Zealand breweries, we find a real life brewery at Founders Brewery. We get ourselves an affordable and generous tasting tray to try some New Zealand craft beer at Founders Brewery.
Before we leave Founders Park we have to check out the giant airplane which you can explore the inside of.
So what do you think of Founders Heritage Park in Nelson and Founders Brewery? Would you add Founders Park and Founders Brewery to your New Zealand bucket list?

Since the early 80s we've been challenging the status quo, doing things our own way to produce a range of exquisitely crafted beverages from the finest natural ingredients. Perched at the top of the South Island in New Zealand's sunniest spot, we utilise the stunning natural resources at our disposal. Our brewers are innovative in their approach, always evolving and pushing the boundaries to create our unique beers, our mouthwatering ciders, and our distinctive range of non-alcoholic beverages. We're a fairly uncomplicated bunch, driven purely by a desire to produce the most satisfying, flavoursome and original beverages on the market.
Dave and Helen in New Zealand - Founders Park Outdoor Museum, Nelson
We had a great day out at Founders Park with Jack and Zane and my daughter Sally. There are some great exhibits and a fully operation brewery. Being ex RAF, I was delighted to go on board the Bristol B170 Freighter MK 31 ZK-CLU Merchant Buccaneer. My grandson Jack told me that the last time he was there he went up the ladder into the cockpit which was now closed off. The beer in the brewery cafe was lush.

Marchfest 2016
MarchFest is a unique craft beer and music festival, held in the beautiful little city of Nelson, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Set in the beautiful, traffic-free environment of Founders Heritage Park, the ninth MarchFest takes place on Saturday March 19th 2016.
The Nelson region is New Zealand’s sole hop growing area – and it exports world class hops globally - as well as supplying local breweries, of course. The region also has more craft breweries per head of the population than anywhere else in the country. Unlike ordinary beer festivals, all the beers available at MarchFest have been specially commissioned for the event and have never previously been tasted by the public. And unlike other beer festivals, MarchFest is not just about beer. It’s also about local wines, ciders and juices, regional cuisine (including a beer and food matching lunch) as well as its ‘event genre mash-up’ insistence on being a craft beer festival, an indie/world music gig, a hops showcase, an educational forum for home/wannabe brewers and a family-friendly day out. It’s hard to believe such a combination can work, but the thousands of people who attend each year are testimony that it does!

Wolverine State Brewing - NZ Pils Brewed with 100% Nelson Sauvin Hops
NZ Pils is a 5.1% Pilsner from Wolverine State Brewing Company in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Wolverine, to my knowledge is the only all-lager brewery in the state, and today I'm checking out NZ Pils, which uses hopped exclusively with Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand (so that's why it's called NZ Pils!?) Does the use of Nelson Sauvin radically change the taste of this pilsner, or is it a gimmick? All of those questions answered in addition to the meaning of life in today's video!
