RUSSIA: MOSCOW: COMMUNISM EXHIBITION
Russian/Nat
A huge exhibition and park complex on the outskirts of Moscow, constructed to celebrate communism's achievements turns 60 on Sunday.
Like the rest of Russia, the centre is now suffering a funding crisis.
Its halls, where Soviet citizens once came to marvel at the technology that could put a man into space, are now warehouses for cheap TVs from South-east Asia.
Now the struggle is to preserve what remains of the park's exhibits.
Superficially, this monument to Soviet achievement still looks good.
Its golden statues continue to glisten, while its magnificent fountains are a magnet for Muscovites in the hot summer.
The vast exhibition and park complex, known as the Exhibition of the Achievements of the National Economy or V-D-N-K, was opened 60 years ago.
Soviet propaganda films portrayed the centre in northern Moscow as a showcase for the achievements of the economy.
This, they said, was a place where the hundreds of nationalities of the USSR's sixteen republics could mix in harmony and display the fruits of their labours.
Now, 60 years on, there are some who are trying to revive those traditions.
Former Soviet prime minister Nikolai Ryzhkov would dearly love to resurrect V-D-N-K as a symbol of the old regime's achievements.
But he admits hard cash will be needed if the centre is to regain its former glory.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
There are many parts of the centre where activities have been stopped. The Kolos fountain hasn't been working for two years because the pressure system needs to be replaced. The Space pavilion is in a pitiful state. It needs 10 million dollars to restore it.
SUPER CAPTION: Vasily Shupira, Exhibition Centre Director
For, like mush of the rest of the former U-S-S-R the V-D-N-K is suffering a crisis of funding.
Its famous Space pavilion is looking the worse for wear.
Under the photo of Yury Gagarin, the first man to orbit the earth, Soviet citizens once came to share in one of the Soviet Union's greatest achievements - the conquest of space.
The final indignity, before the pavilion closed completely, was to be used as a market place for electrical goods.
Other buildings continue to be used for the pursuit of profit.
The centre's management claims money from the sales will be ploughed back into what's left of the exhibits.
Even if the cash raised is enough to keep the ailing centre going, Muscovites, who have grown up visiting its displays, say its too little, too late.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
There are a lot fewer exhibitions now. Basically it's all shopping now. Before you could take a look at the animals, take a horse ride...Now it's just shopping, clothes, not much. Half of it's O.K., half of it's bad.
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop
Nikolai Ryzhkov will continue his efforts to preserve this symbol of the worker's revolution.
But it seems unlikely Soviet-style tractor exhibitions can do much to conjure up the glory days of the V-D-N-K's past
For the moment it seems the modern, capitalist, Russia, has no money to spend preserving its communist past.

Moscow's Gorky Park opened its ice rink Thursday (15 NOV 2012)
Gorky Park ice rink is billed as Europe's largest and it grew even bigger during its off season.
This ice rink got bigger compared to the last year, said the Park's Director Olga Zaharova. Last year it was 15,000 square meters and now it is 18,000 square meters. The Ice rink is now located around the fountain square. I think that it is an excellent atmosphere when you can skate around a huge fountain and move towards the romantic lanes.
Special technology keeps the rink open through the middle of March. There is one main road and additional paths that go around the park. Wooden bridges connect one entrance to another.
The rink also features a childrens area, a figure-skating rink, a figure skating school and an ice hockey rink.

Street Art Graffiti in Ufa. Real Russia ep.99 (4K)
The city of Ufa is one of the first Russian cities which is started collaborate with an artists who makes street art (graffiti).
Administration of Ufa has started legally provide a good areas for an artist to draw their graffiti. Mostly big solid walls of the residential buildings.
For about two years since such a collaboration there already at least ten big street arts, including the ones which are located on a solid walls of 9-floors and higher residential buildings.
In this video you will see a quick review of the most interesting of those street arts.
Gagarin street, 14/1 (Ufa, Russia)
Street art with an image of Yuri Gagarin in a spacesuit. His fame as the first cosmonaut in the World is still pretty big in Russia. You might noticed, but the street with this graffiti is also dedicated to his name.
Gagarin Street, 5 (Ufa, Russia)
It’s just in a few steps from the Yuri Gagarin street art. The graffiti dedicated to the Veterans of the WWII which is in Russia more known as a “Great Patriotic War”. There you can see kinda collective images of how the veterans looked like when they was a young soldiers participating in a WWII. Great Patriotic War was a huge tragedy for all Russian (Soviet) nations and memory about those soldiers who saved the World from fascists is still big.
Chernyishevskiy street, 73 (Ufa, Russia)
This is a street art with a fragment of the picture of famous Russian artist (1862-1942) , Mikhail Nesterov, “The Youth of Veneral Sergiy of Radonezh”. Sergiy of Radonezh is one of the most respectful persons in a land of Russia. He was a monk of Russian Church and a founder of Troitsky Monastery which is still located under the city of Moscow.
Lenin street, 21 (Ufa, Russia)
Graffiti dedicated to the Patriotic War of 1812. It’s a war of Russia against Napoleon’s France on a territory of our country. There an image of four warriors. Two Bashkir warriors and two Russian warriors. Actually, this art reflects a long friendship of Russians with Bashkirs.
Revolution street, 43 (Ufa, Russia)
This is a huge wall which goes across the Head Office of Uralsib Bank, the highest building in Ufa, Russia. It’s the wall where an artist can legally draw their graffiti. A lot of different arts there.
Mendeleev street, 116 (Ufa, Russia)
Graffiti of the dancing Bashkir lady. The city of Ufa is the capital of The Republic of Bashkortostan of Russia. As stated from the name of the republic, historically this is an indigenous land of Bashkir people. This is a nation which has it’s own rich history, culture and traditions. So no wonder why there a Bashkir lady in a national costume is dancing a national dance above the clouds.
This street art painted on a huge solid wall of 10-floors residential building.
Avrory street, 17/1 (Ufa, Russia)
Street art of a boy who reads the book and the shine of knowledge is fallin’ on his face. This graffiti located on a wall of one of the children’s libraries of Ufa. Nice thematical art in an appropriate place and great source of colorful positive for kinda grey block of late-Soviet panel 9-floor residential buildings. Library located right inside of it.
Mushnikov street, 20 (Ufa, Russia)
Nowadays, definitely the best street art in Ufa. It is not only the biggest graffiti painted on a big solid wall of 12-stage residential building but the most colorful picture with a lot of different elements. It is called “Mother with a Baby”. On it’s graffiti we can see a beautiful lady with a water in her hands where right under them in a flower laying a baby. Also there a dove which is sitting in her shoulder.
Filmed in 4K-resolution (3840x2160px) with Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4.

Russia donates Peter the Great statue to France
(5 Oct 2017) Russia has donated a statue of Peter the Great to the French Academy of Sciences to mark 300 years since the Russian czar visited Paris in a pivotal moment in his crusade to open his country toward the West.
In unveiling the bust Thursday, Russian Deputy Culture Minister Alla Manilova told The Associated Press it's a gesture that underlines the depths of our relations.
She also called it a gesture of historic justice: While the French academy holds busts of other great world thinkers, she said, there was one who wasn't here — it was Peter.
The ceremony in the prestigious, domed Paris academy comes as French President Emmanuel Macron has cautiously sought to improve ties with Russia after years of East-West tensions over Moscow's actions in Syria and Ukraine.
