Fountain of Peace in Nagasaki, Japan
The Fountain of Peace is a lasting tribute to the victims of the Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan August 9, 1945. As you climb the stairs (or take the escalator) from the street below, this fountain greets you with a calming peace. This is just one of the numerous touching items in the Peace Park

The city of Nagasaki had been one of the largest seaports in southern Japan, and was of great wartime importance because of its wide-ranging industrial activity, including the production of ordnance, ships, military equipment, and other war materials. The four largest companies in the city were Mitsubishi Shipyards, Electrical Shipyards, Arms Plant, and Steel and Arms Works, which employed about 90% of the city's labor force, and accounted for 90% of the city's industry.[185] Although an important industrial city, Nagasaki had been spared from firebombing because its geography made it difficult to locate at night with AN/APQ-13 radar.[119]
Unlike the other target cities, Nagasaki had not been placed off limits to bombers by the Joint Chiefs of Staff's July 3 directive,[119][186] and was bombed on a small scale five times. During one of these raids on August 1, a number of conventional high-explosive bombs were dropped on the city. A few hit the shipyards and dock areas in the southwest portion of the city, and several hit the Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works.[185] By early August, the city was defended by the 134th Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the 4th Anti-Aircraft Division with four batteries of 7 cm (2.8 in) anti-aircraft guns and two searchlight batteries.[114]
In contrast to Hiroshima, almost all of the buildings were of old-fashioned Japanese construction, consisting of timber or timber-framed buildings with timber walls (with or without plaster) and tile roofs. Many of the smaller industries and business establishments were also situated in buildings of timber or other materials not designed to withstand explosions. Nagasaki had been permitted to grow for many years without conforming to any definite city zoning plan; residences were erected adjacent to factory buildings and to each other almost as closely as possible throughout the entire industrial valley. On the day of the bombing, an estimated 263,000 people were in Nagasaki, including 240,000 Japanese residents, 10,000 Korean residents, 2,500 conscripted Korean workers, 9,000 Japanese soldiers, 600 conscripted Chinese workers, and 400 Allied prisoners of war in a camp to the north of Nagasaki.[187]

A brief look at the Nagasaki Peace Park, commemorating the A-Bombing of 1945. It was established in 1955.
Nagasaki Peace Park or Heiwa Koen is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Nagasaki, and well worth a visit. While not exactly fun, it is quite sobering and educational, and something every responsible person in the world should learn about. That said, there is also far more to Nagasaki than just the A-Bombing, so be sure to sample Nagasaki's wide variety of history, culture and food. It is one of the most unique places in Japan.

As a sailor stationed in Pearl Harbor, visiting ground zero for the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and the Peace Park is a moving and humbling experience.
Japan Rail Trip #6: Nagasaki atomic bomb epicenter & peace park 長崎平和記念公園
We arrived at Nagasaki. Nagasaki has a nice modern train station with a dramatic view on exiting the station.
There are trams just outside the station, which gives the Nagasaki train station area a nice and comfortable feel to it.
We took a tram to go to the atomic bomb epicenter and peace park. It was very sad reminder about what had happened, as we had felt in Hiroshima too.
We also meet a survivor from the bomb who had set up his own little shrine. At the time of our visit he was 85 years old and Nige commented on such a youthful & healthy appearance for a man of that age.
We then caught the tram to the 25 martyrs memorial where a group of Christens were executed by crucifixion. There were also plenty of cats wandering around the memorial and looking for a rub or cuddle.
Be aware of the drinking fountain, it's super charged. The memorial also offers a good view of Nagasaki's harbour.
After that we went to around Oura cathedral, Glover garden, holland slope and Chinatown. The view was nice from the hill near there.
We ate Nagasaki Chanpon noodle and Sara udon both which are famous Nagasaki food. Chanpon's a soup noodle, a little similar to ramen but slightly different. Chanpon has thick noodle compared to ramen. There were lots of vegetable and seafood on top.
Sara udon is a crispy noodle with thick sauce added and with vegetable and seafood on top. The crispy noodle became softer when immersed in the thick sauce. This is a must try Nagasaki food.
Even though we had travelled from Hakata, Nagasaki would not be our final destination for the day for we would be spending the evening in Kumamoto.

The Peace Statue
Fountain of Peace
When the atomic bomb exploded on august 9, 1945, thousand of people suffered terrible burns and died begging for water.
Nagasaki City and the Nagasaki council for world peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons constructed this fountain of peace
with donations received from all over Japan , and dedicated it as an offering of water to the victims of the atomic bomb and a prayer for the
Repose of their souls.
It is our ardent wish that you will remember the departed victims whilst visiting this fountain, and that you will join us in striving for world peace.
The Peace Statue
This statue was erected by the citizens of Nagasaki in August, 1955, on the 10th anniversary of the devastation of this city by the atomic bomb. Thanks
to contributions from Japan and abroad, the ten meter bronze statue, which was designed by seiko kitamura, was dedicated as an appeal for lasting world
Peace and as a prayer that such a tragedy would never be repeated.
The elevated right hand points to the threat of nuclear weapons , while the outstretched left hand symbolizes tranquility and world peace. Divine omnipotence and
Love are embodied in the sturdy physique and gentle countenance of the statue , and a prayer for the repose of the souls of all war victims is expressed in the closed eyes.
Furthermore , the folded right leg symbolizes quiet meditation , while the left leg is poised for action in assisting humanity.
