The Pinnacles; Kauaeranga Kauri Trail; Coromandel Forest Park (with Stelley08)
This winter, I went with both my sisters, some of their friends, and also with Steve, one half of the stelley08 YouTube channel ( to hike to the Pinnacles and also the Pinnacles Hut, in the Coromandel Forest Park, or Coromandel Range, and in the Kauaeranga Valley. We took the Billy Goat track on the way up, dropped off our gear at the hut, then carried on to the Pinnacles themselves, and returned to stay the night at the hut. Some of us got some sleep, some of us were kept awake by a bunch of stoned, drinking and partying Burning Man KiwiBurn idiots. (They do the hike once a year, make sure your trip doesn't coincide with theirs - they get all hoity-toity if you tell then to shut up). Finally, we took the Webb Creek track on the way back down (which is a bit shorter than the Billy Goat route).
Here is Steve's video for the trip (even longer than mine):
The Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand extends 85 kilometres north from the western end of the Bay of Plenty. The peninsula is steep and hilly, and is largely covered in temperate rainforest. The Coromandel Range forms a spine for the peninsula, rising to nearly 900 metres. A forest park covers much of the peninsula's interior. It comprises the eroded remnants of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone, which was highly active during the Miocene and Pliocene periods. Volcanic activity has since primarily shifted southeast to the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Geothermal activity is still present on the Peninsula, with hot springs in several places.

Worldwide Voyage | Tāne Mahuta
Aloha! This is Pomai Bertelmann, and I am crewmember onboard Hōkūleʻa for the Worldwide Voyage. Today, the ʻohana (family) is going to Hokianga on the west side of this large island of Aotearoa where we will be checking out a very special feature - Tāne Mahuta. We are in the Waipoua Forest Reserve. This forest reserve is the home of the largest tract of native and intact forests in the North Island of Aotearoa. Tāne Mahuta is the largest kauri tree that lives here in this forest. What I am particularly overwhelmed with by this ecosystem is that it is very much thriving because of these overgrowth forests. This place has the ability to sustain itself. Mālama Honua is not just about the canoe traveling around the world. Mālama Honua is how we have the ability to thrive if we work together.
How do you mālama honua (care for our Island Earth)? This is the question we ask when we arrive in each port, where crewmembers meet and interact with local communities. The resulting “Stories of Place” highlight local solutions that can be applied to global problems. We invite you to gather solutions from your community and share your Story of Place with us!
Mature Kauri Tree Forest in Paihia, New Zealand
Opononi - Omapere - Hokianga Harbour - Northland - New Zealand
Opononi and Omapere are dual settlements on the south shore of the Hokianga harbour in Northland Region, New Zealand. State Highway 12 runs through Opononi and Omapere.
As you approach the seaside settlements of Omapere and Opononi you’ll notice the immense sand dunes of Niua.
Opononi became famous in 1955-56 because of Opo the dolphin. This name was given to a young female bottlenosed dolphin (genus Tursiops) which throughout the summer of 1955–56 frequented the beach at Opononi, Hokianga, inviting repeated human contact and playing with bathers and children in a manner not previously recorded for a wild dolphin since Roman times. Opo could be relied on to appear almost every day, and could be summoned by the sound of an outboard motor, audible to her from a great distance. Certain children, especially, established friendly contact. She permitted stroking and scratching, and even short rides by smaller children. (courtesy of Te Ara)
Opononi and its neighbouring sister Omapere make a great base to discover the Waipoua Forest, New Zealand’s largest kauri rainforest.
A walking track leads to an old signal station on Arai te uru, the south head. Take a boat trip across the harbour to the giant dunes where you can try dune surfing, or take a walk on the beach between Koutu and Kauwhare points on the south shore of the Hokianga Harbour where you will find the Koutu Boulders, one of the Hokianga’s better kept secrets.

Salt Air Exclusive Helicopter Tours bay of Islands
Departing from central Paihia or from the helicopter landing areas available at selected luxury lodges in Northland, we fly for approximately 40 minutes via Northlands spectacular harbours, such as the Whangaroa Harbour and Rangaunu Harbour. We also pass across some beautiful beaches such as Coopers Beach, Doubtless Bay and of course the famous Ninety-Mile Beach. Passengers are offered the option of making a stop on Ninety-Mile Beach to spend some time exploring the beach itself before proceeding to our landing area at Waitiki Landing, 20km from Cape Reinga.
Once landed an exclusive vehicle will meet the helicopter to begin the ground tour. As this tour is a sole charter, it is for an unspecified time, however the duration is approximately four hours around the top of New Zealand in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. During the tour, a gourmet picnic lunch will be served at a sheltered and secluded spot recommended by your guide on the day. The tour will take you to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, Tapotupotu Bay, then across to the Te Paki stream with its giant sand dunes. The opportunity to enjoy some exhilarating sand tobogganing is also available.
The flight back to your departure point includes some of the most spectacular coastal scenery Northland has to offer. You will fly over the Parengarenga Harbour and Great Exhibition Bay, which are only visible by air or by sea. This area is very remote and without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand with it's pure white sand and crystal clear water. There are other secluded private beaches where we are able to stop for a stroll or swim if passengers chose this option. The flight also passes across the Houhora Harbour, the Cavalli islands, Kauri Cliff's golf course and the spectacular Bay of Islands if this is your original departure point.
Other options which can be included in the Helicopter VIP Tour:
Tane Mahuta in conjunction with Footprints Waipoua.
Footprints is operated by local Maori on Northlands rugged West Coast. Let Kupe's (NZ's first discoverer) descendants take you on a guided walk of the largest kauri forest in the world and introduce you to their relationship with mother nature, both spiritually and culturally. This ecologically significant environment, in former times a home and playground to Maori, is brought to life by not only the sounds and potential sightings of its inhabitants but by friendly experienced local Maori guides who willingly share their knowledge, stories, song and musical instruments to enlighten and enhance this tranquil and spiritual location. A highlight of your experience with Footprints will be an introduction to Tane Mahuta - God of the Forest. (Forest Tour duration approx. 2 hours). Your flight path will then continue north via the Hokianga Harbour, remote and beautiful west coast areas via the Herekino Harbour to the world famous 90-Mile Beach.
4WD Quad Bikes on Ninety-Mile Beach
Again, a guided tour for approximately 1½ hours on 4WD Quad Bikes around Shipwreck Bay and the reefs at the southern end of 90-Mile Beach. This tour is definitely for the young at heart, and requires the passengers to ride their own 4WD Quad Bikes - great fun for all ages.
