Hilo ,beautiful city in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States prepares for Hurricane Lane
Hilo (/ˌhiːloʊ/; Hawaiian: [ˈhilo]) is the largest settlement and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States, which encompasses the Island of Hawaiʻi. The population was 43,263 at the 2010 census.[1]
Hawaii island
Hilo is the county seat of the County of Hawaiʻi and is located in the District of South Hilo.[2] The town overlooks Hilo Bay, at the base of two shield volcanoes; Mauna Loa, an active volcano, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and the site of some of the world's most important ground-based astronomical observatories. Much of the city is at some risk from lava flows from Mauna Loa. The majority of human settlement in Hilo stretches from Hilo Bay to Waiākea-Uka, on the flanks of Mauna Loa.
Hilo is home to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi, as well as the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula which takes place annually after Easter. Hilo is also home to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, one of the world's leading producers of macadamia nuts. The town is served by Hilo International Airport.[3]

Hurricane Lane is currently a very powerful tropical cyclone approaching the Hawaiian Islands, the strongest hurricane in the central Pacific since Ioke in 2006, and the first Category 5 Pacific hurricane since Patricia in 2015. The twelfth named storm, sixth hurricane, and fourth major hurricane of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season, Lane originated from a tropical wave that began producing disorganized thunderstorm activity several hundred miles off the southern coast of Mexico on August 11. Over the next four days, the disturbance gradually strengthened amid favorable weather conditions and formed a tropical depression early on August 15. Twelve hours later, the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Lane. Gradual strengthening occurred for the next day and a half which resulted in Lane reaching hurricane status by August 17. Lane then began a period of rapid intensification, becoming a high-end Category 2 hurricane on the same day. Lane continued to rapidly intensify, reaching Category 4 status twelve hours later. Lane reached its initial peak with winds of 140 mph (220 km/h) and a pressure of 948 mbar (27.99 inHg) on August 18. On August 19, Lane crossed into the Central Pacific basin, where it encountered increasing wind shear, subsequently weakening the storm. However, on August 20, Lane re-intensified into a Category 4 hurricane, and reached Category 5 intensity early on August 22.

The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 727.2 square miles (1,883 km2) and is the 17th-largest island in the United States. Maui is part of the State of Hawaii and is the largest of Maui County's four islands, bigger than Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and unpopulated Kahoʻolawe. In 2010, Maui had a population of 144,444, third-highest of the Hawaiian Islands, behind that of Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island. Kahului is the largest census-designated place (CDP) on the island with a population of 26,337 as of 2010 and is the commercial and financial hub of the island.[5] Wailuku is the seat of Maui County and is the third-largest CDP as of 2010. Other significant places include Kīhei (including Wailea and Makena in the Kihei Town CDP, which is the second-most-populated CDP in Maui), Lahaina (including Kāʻanapali and Kapalua in the Lahaina Town CDP), Makawao, Pukalani, Pāʻia, Kula, Haʻikū, and Hāna.

So why does the cone of uncertainty have Hurricane Lane turning west?
Dr. Steven Businger, Ph.D., C.C.M. Department of Meteorology University Of Hawaii
Hurricane Lane batters Hawaii with high winds and torrential rain
Hurricane Lane was downgraded to a Category 3 but officials warn it remains dangerous. 'Excessive rain' will likely continue over the weekend and hurricane warnings remain in most of the island. Hurricane Lane's center was recorded around 260 miles south of Honolulu, with winds clocking near 125 mph. Oahu prepared to set off a siren warning on Thursday for those who needed to seek shelter before nightfall, while some airlines began canceling flights. Meanwhile, two campers have become trapped in Waipio Valley on the Big Island's northern coast.

[Hawaii] Honolulu Fire Dept. Engine 9 Responding from Kakaako Fire Station!
Captured here is Engine 9 of the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) responding out of Kakaako Fire Station, which is also connected to the HFD Headquarters. Engine Company No. 9 had a busy day that day as they were already on a call when I toured the station, and received another emergency run shortly after returning to the station. It is relatively hard to catch fire engines responding in Honolulu, as most medical calls and non-fire related incidents are handled by the department's aerial rigs. This is done to keep the water carrying engines ready to respond to fires as much as possible, as fires can spread rapidly in the city's structures, mostly due to high winds from the sea. Mahalo (thank you) to the firefighters of Kakaako for welcoming me at their station!

Passing by Hawaii, Hurricane Lane Pelts Big Island with Rain
Hurricane Lane unleashed torrents of rain and landslides that blocked roads on Hawaii's mostly rural Big Island on Thursday as residents and tourists in the state's biggest city braced for the dangerous storm to come their way. Paul Deanno and Allen Martin report. (8-23-18)
Hawaii braces for Category 4 Hurricane Lane
하와이, 26년만에 대형 허리케인 상륙
Now let's turn to some extreme weather affecting other parts of the world….
Hawaii is bracing for a Category 4 cyclone, named Hurricane Lane, which is expected to make landfall in the coming days.
For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram…
Aram… what do we know so far?
Well Mark… Hurricane Lane has already begun unloading heavy rain on Big Island and Maui.
More than 76 centimeters of rainfall is expected when the storm makes landfall.
Gale-force winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour are also likely to create huge waves, sparking fears of flash flooding.
Six of Hawaii's islands are under a hurricane warning and residents have already started to make preparations.
There are long lines outside gas stations as people rush to refuel their vehicles.
Most wholesale retailers and big-box stores, such as Costco, were sold out of bottled waters and other emergency supplies, including power generators and even canned food.
Meanwhile, President Trump has tweeted that he has approved an emergency disaster declaration.
The worst of Hurricane Lane is expected to be seen on Friday as is moves past Big Island during the day.
However, there is still some uncertainty surrounding the storm.
Weather authorities cannot say for sure that Hurricane Lane will directly hit Hawaii and they are hoping that it moves further west and away from the island.
If the storm does hit Hawaii it would be the first to do so in 26 years.

Hurricane Lane Hits Hawaii With Strong Winds, Torrential Rain
HONOLULU (Reuters) - High winds and torrential rains from Hurricane Lane pounded Hawaii on Thursday, touching off flash floods, landslides and heavy surf as it spun toward the islands, prompting schools and offices to close as residents hunkered down to ride out the storm. With Lane still churning in the Pacific Ocean some 200 miles (322 km) south-southeast of Kailua-Kona, more than a foot (30 cm) of rain had already fallen on the eastern side of the Big Island, said Kelly Wooten, a spokeswoman for the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency.

Hurricane Lane Lashing Parts Of Hawaii With Drenching Rains
Hurricane Lane is inundating parts of Hawaii with life-threatening amounts of rain as it crawls toward the state, and the storm's most powerful winds are expected to whip the central islands Friday night.
*AIRHORN* [Honolulu Fire Dept.] Tiller Ladder 2 Responding With Lights & Siren
Captured here is tiller Ladder 2 of the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) responding to two separate emergencies, likely medical calls, and later returning. Ladder 2, based at the 'Pawaa' fire station, is considered one of the busiest ladder companies in the city, as HFD has a policy to send aerial trucks first for medical calls instead of sending an engine. This is done in order to always keep an engine company ready in case a fire call comes in, as fires can move and spread very quickly in Honolulu due to high winds from the ocean and predominantly wooden buildings.
