Chroncile 2015 photo slideshow
From local festivals to scandals involving politicians and other public servants to state budget battles to the Chicago Cubs,
The Chronicle Media invites you to take a look back at the year 2015 in photos.
- The death and then fall of Fox Lake police officer Lt. Joe Gliniewicz shocked this northern Illinois community as the subsequent investigation revealed a much darker side to the man known as “G.I.Joe” and drew national media attention.
- Kendall County and other health departments throughout the state took part in yearlong community health assessment projects, meeting with people of all walks of life in their counties to assess the needs and expectations of their populations.
- Oswego’s new village president, Gail Johnson, placed an emphasis on economic development and promotion of the downtown riverwalk area.
- Ribs on the River in Yorkville
- Pony rides are always popular at local festivals.
- Dog parks are gaining in popularity in communities as forest preserve districts and park districts see an increased interest in public lands where people to take their pets and interact with other dog owners.
- The Peoria Public Library celebrated its 135th anniversary with events all year long.
- Yorkville’s Hometown Days is a homecoming celebration.
- Wine lovers gathered in Oswego for the annual Wine on the Fox weekend in May.
- One of Central Illinois’ major manufacturing employers Mitsubishi announced it cease production at its plant in Normal by the end of the year. The Japanese-based company cited declining sales in some of the vehicles manufactured at the plant.
- Unprecedented rainfalls in June led to flooding across the state and washed out farmers’ fields in Central and southern Illinois. The state and federal governments stepped in to help farmers with funding.
- Gov. Bruce Rauner talks with residents after a tornado came through the small town of Delavan on July 16.
- The massive I-74 and I-155 project near Morton marked a major turning point in late fall, reopening some interchanges just in time for holiday travel season. The project is entering its final year in 2016.
- The Normal Theater helped WJBC celebrate its 90th anniversary by partnering on a summer classic film project.
- The Heritage Barn Quilt Trail added more attractions with quilt hangings in McLean and Woodford counties. The project is intended to honor the tradition of barn quilts in Central Illinois and be used as a tourist attraction in the Route 66 Corridor.
- Despite areas of the economy going strong, other segments are not faring as well. With state funds on hold and social services seeing budget cuts, food pantries and shelters across Illinois were experiencing high demand for assistance in their communities.
- Segments of the National Aids Quilt, (shown here in Washington D.C.) came to the Peoria area in the November.
- Changing of the guard announced at Eureka College beginning in June 2016,
- The Big Hat Rodeo came to Eureka in September, courtesy of the Eureka Reagan Festival committee.
- Peoria Public Library hosted events to celebrate its 135th year.
- Connect Transit serving the Bloomington/Normal area is getting a review as the agency looks to improve customer service and add routes to serve more riders.
- Chillicothe native and prep football legend Jerry Blew was inducted into the Illinois Valley Central Distinguished Alumni in July. He had previously been inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame. Blew still coaches high school, working as a volunteer quarterback coach in Bolingbrook.
- Upon taking office in January, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner announced he would make big changes in the way Illinois government operates. Rauner dug in early on his budget demands and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly held fast. The result is the state has been without an official budget since July 1.
- Republican Congressman Aaron Schock, from Peoria, allegedly used taxpayer money for private use and extravagant furnishings for his congressional office, among other things. Schock resigned his 18th Congressional District seat in March and he was subsequently replaced by Republican Darin LaHood, as the result of a special election in September.
- The young Chicago Cubs surprised their fans and the baseball world by reaching the National League Championship Series in October. They defeated their Central Division rivals the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the NL playoffs.
- Local governments were anxious about funding road services this winter because of the state budget stalemate until an agreement was reached to release some funds for road crews. The mild and snow-free December was a stark contrast to Winter storm Bella that dumped an average of 16 inches of snow across Northern Illinois Nov. 20-21.
-Republican businessman Bruce Rauner took office in January 2015 as Illinois’s 42nd governor.

Huge thanks to Sweet Cheeks Winery here in Eugene, OR ( for letting us film there, which was the only green place we could find in mid-August! This summer in Oregon has been absolutely beautiful and I have loved spending time outdoors with the family. So, I am really excited to give you a small taste of that by sharing some of the lovely scenery from my state in this video. Besides the scenery, we wanted to keep this video sweet and simple and let the song speak for itself. :) I hope you love this video as much as I loved creating it!

LYRICS:
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling.
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling.
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying.
Tis you, tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow.
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow.
And I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow.
Oh, Danny boy, oh, Danny boy, I love you so.
But when you come, when all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
I pray you'll find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an ave there for me.
And I will hear, though soft you tread above me,
And on my grave will warmer, sweeter be.
For you'll come and tell me that you love me,
And I will sleep in peace until you come to me.

Thousands of fish leap out of water at same time - Slow Mo!
Weird Jumping Alien Asian Carp Invade the Illinois River. In the 1970's silver carp were accidentally introduced into the Illinois River after escaping from a fish farm. The fish mistake pressure waves from the propellors of the boat's motors for the movements of predators and jump with fright. Each jumping fish scares its neighbour, causing a dangerous chain reaction.

SUMMARY
=======
The Great Lakes (French: les Grands-Lacs), also called the Laurentian Great Lakes and the Great Lakes of North America, are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper mid-east region of North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. They consist of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, although hydrologically, there are four lakes, Superior, Erie, Ontario, and Michigan-Huron.
The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area, and second largest by total volume, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume. The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3), slightly less than the volume of Lake Baikal (23,615 km³, 22–23% of the world's surface fresh water). Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas. Not counting Lake Michigan-Huron, Lake Superior is the second largest lake in the world by area, and the largest freshwater lake by area. Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country. The Great Lakes began to form at the end of the last glacial period around 14,000 years ago, as retreating ice sheets exposed the basins they had carved into the land which then filled with meltwater. The lakes have been a major source for transportation, migration, trade, and fishing, serving as a habitat to a large number of aquatic species in a region with much biodiversity.
The surrounding region is called the Great Lakes region, which includes the Great Lakes Megalopolis.
