Framingham Winery Entrance - Renwick, NZ
Framingham Wines, Marlborough, New Zealand
Framingham Wines Limited derives its name from the village of Framingham, located in Southern Norfolk in the UK. This small village was the ancestral home of the Company's founder, Rex Brooke-Taylor.
The first wine made under the Framingham label, a Riesling, was released in 1994. The vineyards that produce Framingham wine however, date back to the early 1980's where Rex Brooke-Taylor first started planting the relatively young, stony, free draining river bed soils of the Estate just outside Renwick......

Framingham Wines Xmas Message
Our Framingham range includes Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Montepulciano. Our F-Series wines give us the freedom to push boundaries with wild fermentation, new varieties and new techniques.
The best of what we learn from F-Series is incorporated into the Framingham range - staying true to our original style while allowing innovation.
The original vineyard was established by Wellington engineer Rex Brooke-Taylor who took the name Framingham from his ancestral home town near Norwich, England.
Our initial releases were produced using other wineries' facilities. The first wine released under the Framingham name was a 1994 Riesling. Our winery and tasting room were built in 1997, and a specialist red wine handling facility and barrel hall was added in 2002. We produced wine from our new winery on Conders Bend Road in the Wairau Valley for the first time in 1998.
Today we are a family-owned Sogrape company, our range includes Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Viognier and Montepulciano. In past years we have also produced Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinotage, Merlot, Merlot-Malbec, Chenin Blanc and Methode Champenoise.
The alluvial soils of the estate were formed by the sedimentation of the Wairau River. In the warm centre of the valley, with a low rainfall and relatively low frost risk, we can harvest controlled yields at desired ripeness.
, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are all grown on our Wairau Valley estate. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are also sourced from select contract growers in the same valley.

Less is more: Small but 'superb' 2019 vintage good news for NZ's wine reputation
A warm summer has contributed to a small but superb harvest in New Zealand wine regions.
Framingham Wines' harvest was smaller than originally thought, but what was harvested was better quality than previous years, said viticulturist James Bowskill.
We had less rain for a good part of the summer which meant the fruit was nice and clean, he said.
In total, the Renwick company harvested 623.8 tonnes. The biggest quantity drop was in their pinot noir fruit.

Bowskill said the weather conditions were good for Framingham's style as they like to push a riper spectrum.
He said the smaller yield was not an issue because the quality was so high.
However, he also thought it was too hot and dry to be an iconic, classic Marlborough year.
Marlborough contributed to 76.6 per cent of the harvest with a total of 305,467 tonnes which was down 2 per cent from last year's harvest.
There was a total of 413,000 tonnes of grapes harvested this season which was smaller than first thought, however the quality had been described as exceptional. The harvest was also 6000 tonnes smaller than the year before.
Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens said if you looked at a checklist of what people want before a harvest, it delivered exactly what the Marlborough wine industry wanted.
From what I've heard, people are really happy with what was harvested, Pickens said.
The end product was yet to be tasted, but Pickens was hopeful the high quality harvest would produce some top quality wine.
Pickens thought the smaller harvest was different to the perception people had during vintage.
I think a lot of people thought there was a lot being harvested, Pickens said.
He said the smaller harvest might constrain some wine companies but on the whole it should not effect the industry too much.
New Zealand winegrowers chief executive Phillip Gregan said every vintage is different but winemakers are excited about the calibre of wine that will be delivered to the bottle.
We are confident 2019 vintage wines will be enjoyed by consumers around the world. Gregan said
Gregan said a high-quality harvest was good news for the industry as export growth continued. Exports had increased 4 per cent over the last year with a total of 1.78 billion in earnings.
We have an international reputation for premium quality and innovation, Gregan said.
Vintage 2019 was the third smaller-than-expected harvest in a row, so sales were expected to be constrained.
The small harvest in 2017 and 2018 meant wineries had to manage product shortages.
Another smaller-than-expected vintage will mean more supply and demand tension overall, Gregan said.
The Marlborough harvest kicked off 10 days earlier than normal this year, after war
