Sierra Gorda Querétaro, Mexico
The Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro is today one of Mexico's World Heritage Sites. The inscription covers the five missions namely Santiago de Jalpan, Nuestra Señora de la Luz de Tancoyol, Santa María del Agua de Landa, San Francisco del Valle de Tilaco and San Migual Concá. These missions were built during the last phase of the conversion to Christianity of the interior of Mexico during the mid 18th century.
Queretaro, Mexico
Located in Mexico's central region, Queretaro has an interesting ethnic and cultural heritage that has developed from the integration of pre-Hispanic and European customs.
In the city of Queretaro, the state capital, you'll see beautiful examples of Baroque architecture. In fact, the buildings there are so impressive that the UNESCO considered declaring the city a World Heritage City. Among the notable edifices are the churches of San Felipe Neri and Santa Rosa Viterbo, quarry stone constructions that house precious altarpieces, and the Teatro de la Republica, where Mexico's constitution was signed. In this state you can also visit Juriquilla, which has exclusive spa resorts and golf courses, and the surrounding areas of Bernal, which provide ideal conditions for rock climbing and rappelling.
In Tequisquiapan, a town with a unique viceregal feel, you'll find various trails for mountain biking. In San Juan Del Rio, you can visit Rancho El Siete, where you can take a hot air balloon ride that goes 400 meters (1,320 feet) high. Finally, in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, you can go to El Sotano del Barro, where you can do some paragliding. During your stay, you can also visit the famous Franciscan missions, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. At all of these places you can enjoy delicious regional cuisine; typical dishes are prepared with such ingredients as corn, chili peppers, cacti and fruits. You'll also find a wide variety of crafts at the stores and markets, including textiles, furniture, wooden utensils, opal products and stone sculptures.

Junípero Serra was born Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer. Born in Petra, Majorca, Spain. He later took the name of Junípero in honor of Saint Juniper, who had also been a Franciscan and a follower of Saint Francis. On September 14, 1730, he entered the Order of Friars Minor. For his proficiency in studies he was appointed lector of philosophy before his ordination to the priesthood. Later he received a doctorate in theology from the Lullian University in Palma de Mallorca, where he also occupied the Duns Scotus chair of philosophy until he joined the missionary College of San Fernando de Mexico in 1749.
He requested a transfer to the Sierra Gorda Indian Missions some 90 miles north of Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico. He spent about nine years and during this time, he served as the mission's superior, learned the language of the Pame Indians, and translated the catechism into their language. Recalled to Mexico City, he became famous as a most fervent and effective preacher of missions.
Serra moved to the area which is now Monterey in 1770, and founded Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo. He remained there as Father Presidente of the Alta California missions. In 1771, Serra relocated the mission to Carmel, which became known as Mission Carmel and served as his headquarters. Under his presidency were founded Mission San Antonio de Padua, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San Francisco de Asís, Mission Santa Clara de Asís, and Mission San Buenaventura.

Sierra Gorda and Junipero Serra
Deep in Sierra Gorda you can find hidden architectural gems. Around Jalpan de Serra are 5 missions founded under the name of Junipero Serra. This Franciscan monk tried there to create a trading center for precious metals. The indigenous people didn’t like the idea and sabotaged the project.
Junipero Serra then went to Southern California and had more success with San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
To visit the 5 “hidden” missions is a possibility to see, how the beginnings of, for example, San Francisco must have been.
The Indigenous won, but today they are forgotten……

Episode 10: Church Bells in Jalpan and drive to Ciudad Victoria
Visiting the Franciscan Mission in Jalpan and driving through the mountains to Ciudad Victoria.
Junipero Serra of Mallorca
Father Junipero Serra, the Spanish Franciscan priest who founded the first missions in California was from Mallorca. The interior where Serra was from has changed little and was dry farmed with what little rain falls. This arid island was fertile ground for the Catholic Church and the Spanish Mission Movement that helped the Spanish Empire control and use the labor of the indigenous people of the new world. A disproportionate number of missionaries came from Mallorca. The missionaries desire to bring salvation to as many non-Christians as they could proved to be instrumental in generating a workforce to enrich the Empire. Novitiates studied the lives of saints and learned of their heroic work converting the heathens of the world. Serra was inspired by several saints in particular; St. Xavier in India and St. Francis Solano in Peru. St. Francis of Assisi was profoundly significant for Serra with his message of humble simplicity and caring for those in need. Deeply reverent and passionately persuasive, he became a sought after speaker from the pulpit throughout Mallorca. The oratorical style of his day was extremely dramatic; chest beating, flaming torches applied to bare skin and scourging the back with whips; endurance of pain and shedding of blood demonstrated piety. Serra was a scholar who held esteemed positions at Llullian University and Palma Cathedral and was highly regarded as an intellectual. At age 36 he answered a call for missionaries to New Spain and he and his friend and former student Fr. Palou received permission to sail to Mexico City and enroll in the Missionary College of San Francisco to learn the Franciscan style of missions. He spent one of his last days in Mallorca at the hilltop shrine of Santuaria de Cura where there is today a monastery and guesthouse.
Misión Santa Barbara, California
La misión Santa Barbara, fundada por los frenciscanos en California es considerada La reina de las misiones, una de las 21 misiones fundadas en California por los frailes, inicialmente por el fraile Junípero Serra.
The official literature calls Mission Santa Barbara Queen of the Missions for its graceful beauty. Founded on December 4th, 1786, it was the tenth of 21 Franciscan missions in California. It still functions as a church today.
