Explore Dallas - Franconia Brewery (extended)
In this episode we go to Franconia Brewery just 15 minutes north of Dallas in McKinney. Dennis Wehrmann talks with us about his beer and German brewing heritage. Be sure to head up to Franconia for a tour and taste Dallas' own micro beer.
Fortune
We like beer. It makes us a jolly good string band. So we had this gig at Franconia Brewing Co. in McKinney, Texas. It was part and parcel of Dallas Beer Week, which we thought was a brilliant idea. That's Earnie Taft on fiddle; Travis Brink on guitar, and me on the old banjo. It was windy and played hell on our condenser microphone despite the high-tech windscreen fashioned from cardboard and duck tape.

Nine-Band Brewing Co. - Groundbreaking (March 26, 2014)
ALLEN, Texas -- The Allen Economic Development Corporation is pleased to announce Nine-Band Brewing Company breaking ground at Prestige Circle in Allen where the 8,100 SF showroom and craft brewery will open this summer.
Nine-Band Brewing is the inspiration of owner Keith Ashley and brewmaster Jack Sparks, an Allen native who has returned from La Paz, Bolivia, where he was a brewmaster for Saya Beer, a microbrewery.
Ashley, a former financial partner in Franconia Brewery in nearby McKinney, has ambitious plans to expand Nine-Band, so named for the nine-banded armadillo which is widely found in North, We hope to become as prolific as the nine-banded armadillo, said Ashley. In the near term, we expect in five years to produce 40 percent the volume of the Spoetzl Brewery, which brews Shiner Bock and is distributed in 39 states.
Allen is known nationwide on a number of levels, said Scott Sutherland, Allen Economic Development Board President. We look forward to also being known as the city where Nine-Band is brewed.
Ashley said he chose Allen because he and Sparks have roots here. He said the community has the necessary demographics and proximity to Dallas, and they received the support of city officials.
Across the nation this past year, approximately 2,300 craft brewers sold just over 13 million barrels, an increase of 1.8 million barrels from the previous year, said Dan Bowman, Allen Economic Development Interim Executive Director/CEO. We know Nine-Band had other opportunities, and we are excited that Allen will be the springboard for them to launch and grow.
Hops to Taps
Uncle Billy's Brewery & Smokehouse will become the first Texas brewpub in state history to have its beer distributed through a third-party to local bars and restaurants across Central Texas. Changes in state laws have loosened limitations for craft breweries throughout Texas -- a milestone for the state, for the industry, and for the people who love delicious craft beer.

Shiner White Wing Belgian White The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer on a wing and a prayer with Shiner White Wing Belgian White Ale.
Brewed by: Spoetzl Brewery Texas, United States
This beer rules the roost! Brewed with authentic Belgian yeast, hints of coriander, and orange peel. White Wing has all the spice and citrus aroma of a true to style Belgian wheat ale. Slightly sweet and highly drinkable, it's a delightfully odd bird.

Spoetzl Brewery is a brewery located in Shiner, Texas, USA. The brewery produces the popular line of Shiner Beers, including their flagship Shiner Bock, a dark lager that is now distributed in 48 states, with a goal to be in all 50 by the end of 2014. The brewery is owned by The Gambrinus Company, a family-owned company in San Antonio.
Spoetzl was founded in 1909, and is the oldest independent brewery in Texas. A group of businessmen incorporated Shiner Brewing Association and placed Herman Weiss in as the company's first brewmaster. In 1914 a German immigrant brewer named Kosmas (or Kosmos) Spoetzl co-leased with Oswald Petzold with an option to buy in 1915. Spoetzl had attended brewmaster's school and apprenticed for three years in Germany, worked for eight years at the Pyramids Brewery in Cairo, Egypt, and then worked in Canada. He moved to San Antonio in search of a better climate for his health, bringing with him a family recipe for a Bavarian beer made from malted barley and hops.
During Prohibition, Kosmos Spoetzl kept the brewery afloat by selling ice and making near beer. After Prohibition only five of the original 13 Texas breweries were still intact. When the Prohibition laws were repealed, larger beer plants, such as Anheuser-Busch, moved to Texas making life harder on the smaller independent breweries, but Spoetzl kept things small and simple, never going more than 70 miles for business.
In the 1970s and 1980s the brewery's Shiner Beer and Shiner Bock had less than 1 percent of the Texas market. In 1983 Spoetzl produced 60,000 barrels of beer; in 1990 only 36,000. Sales improved after Carlos Alvarez of San Antonio acquired the brewery in 1989: Production grew to 100,000 barrels in 1994, and over the next ten years, production nearly tripled. The company now has 85 employees. As of 2013, it was the fourth-largest craft brewery and tenth-largest overall brewery in the United States.
