Artist Talk by Jason Sheridan Brown. Mining The Landscape

October 3rd 2019, Jason Sheridan Brown from Knoxville TN gave an artist talk titled Mining The Landscape, curated by CAC (coast arts collective) and sponsored by Link and Pin Café in Woy Woy Australia via Skype.

‘My sculptures are situated in urban and rural landscapes in order to question human relationships with the natural world.
I am particularly interested in exploring transitional spaces where growth and destruction are happening simultaneously.
My recent work explores mountainous landscapes and rural cultures through a series of projects that question the controversial practice of mountaintop removal coal mining…’

Jason Sheridan Brown received his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999, and has been teaching Sculpture at the University of Tennessee since 2001. Brown’s artwork has been exhibited nationally, including solo and group exhibitions in 22 states, and internationally in Canada and New Zealand. Some recent public art projects include large-scale outdoor sculpture installations at the Josephine Sculpture Park in Frankfort, Kentucky, and Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, Minnesota. Brown has had recent solo gallery installations at Lexington Art League in Kentucky and 621 Gallery in Tallahassee, Florida with an upcoming two-person exhibition at Alexander Brest Gallery in Jacksonville, Florida in 2020. In 2018, he completed a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity in Alberta, Canada.

Brown is involved in a number of collaborative public art projects in an effort to engage in civic dialogues about individual, community, and place. His work engages other disciplines including architecture, ecology and landscape design. Throughout his art and teaching, Brown emphasizes interdisciplinary cooperation amongst creative thinkers such as his current traveling exhibitions and curatorial projects with the Land Report Collective. Land Report recently staged exhibitions at the Islander Gallery in Corpus Christi, Texas with an upcoming exhibition at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art in Indiana. Land Report Collective is also planning future projects with the international art + science consortium of Extraction: Art on the Edge of the Abyss for 2021.

In her abstract paintings, Valerie Jenkins uses color and shape to challenge what is real and what is an illusion. The SpotLight Musical Theatre Program serves more than 60 Minnesota high schools through workshops and an annual award program.
