The Franklin River Wild
Rafting and portaging the Franklin River in South West Tasmania, Australia, at very high water (November 2016).
The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park is wild by nature, wild by name, with towering mountain peaks, waterfalls, spectacular gorges and ever-changing rivers running through the heart of the Tasmanian wilderness. Part of Tasmania's World Heritage Area, this national park is closely linked to the successful campaign led by the Wilderness Society to protect the beautiful Franklin River from being dammed in the 1980s.
This video shows the river at Nasty Notch, Irenabyss, Coruscades, the Churn, Pig Trough, Rock Island Bend and Newlands Cascades among other beautiful spots of the river. The group was stuck at Newlands Cascades for 4 days waiting for the river levels to drop before retrieving the rafts from the trees near the bottom of Pig Trough. A truly epic adventure.
Special thanks to the guides from World Expeditions/Tasmanian Expeditions; Jordie Rieniets, Sammy Brain and Abigail Nimui Liagiba.

Driving through Franklin-Gordon Wild River National Park 2017
Was lucky enough to drive through this park in Tasmania. Excuse my crap video (i am the front passenger in a hire car) but it gives you a very basic idea of the old natural growth there. As I am from Perth, the whole trip has been fantastic while in Tasmania, so different to where I live.
Wandering Foxbat 59 - Tasmania's Franklin River

The Franklin Wild River Trailer
In 1980 respected conservationist, future Australian Senator and leader of the Greens, Bob Brown, paddled a rubber dinghy through the spectacular rapids of Tasmania's mighty Franklin River. Part of a filmed campaign to halt plans to flood the river and bring international awareness to the remarkably untouched natural habitat, The Franklin Wild River is a thought-provoking meditation on one of Australia's last great outposts. The Franklin and Gordon rivers were listed as part of Tasmania's World Heritage Area in 1982 and became the focus of the largest conservation campaign in Australia's history.

Experience the wilderness of the Gordon River - The new Gordon River Cruise
In early 2018, Gordon River Cruises will launch a new vessel that will enable a wilderness cruising experience like nothing else in Australia. The new vessel will be state of the art but as tourism industry legend Simon Currant mentions here, it's not about the boat, it's about the magnificence of the Gordon River. A place that time forgot and that will remain protected forever. We look forward to sharing it with you.

Franklin River
The Franklin River is one of the most remote whitewater rafting trips in the world. The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers national park lies at the heart of Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
