The Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest
On our final day in Budapest, we were honored with a personal tour of the Liszt Ferenc Zeneakademia. This world famous music conservatory was founded in 1875 by the brilliant Hungarian pianist and composer Franz Liszt. The present building, a masterpiece of Hungarian Art Nouveau was completed in 1907. The alumni of this great cultural institution include such luminaries as Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly, Erno Dohnanyi, Imre Kalman, Georg Solti, Antal Dorati, Istvan Kertesz and Andras Schiff. As a music lover and an architecture enthusiast, my visit to the Zeneakademia was particularly exciting for me. I gratefully thank my Hungarian friends for making it possible.

Budapest's Liszt Academy has recently reopened its doors after a major and successful renovation.
Whilst enhancing its prestigious musical past this Hungarian institution, both a music university and a concert hall, is ambitiously projecting itself towards the future and reinventing its image.
The building is beyond definition, the abundance in motifs and ornaments makes it unique, and the extent of their significance is still to be completely revealed. From these treasures from the past we are trying to project a modern brand, says Imre Szabó Stein, Head of Communications.
The Academy, which was founded by Liszt in 1875, moved to the present wonderful Art Nouveau building in 1907. Some of the greatest Hungarian musicians were trained here and top 20th century artists have performed in its breathtaking concert hall.
András Batta is the Academy's President. Many musicians came here, big Russian artists, Richter, Rostropovich, they loved the hall, its special atmosphere. Through that, artists and the audience can get closer because the shape of the hall is like a bell, the artist is the clapper, and it's as if the audience echoed this kind of 'bell', he says.
Some of today's greatest Hungarian musicians performed at the reopening gala from pianist Bogányi to violinists Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen who also teach at the Academy.
This is the temple of music, this is a shrine. And I always feel the same happiness when I enter this building, this is my alma mater. I was educated here from the age of 12: everything I have, I got it here, and it's what I can offer my students, explains Katalin Kokas.
I'd like to say that my grandfather was one of the most influential gipsy orchestra leaders in the '30s. I only knew him from old black and white films. My mother hardly remembers him because he died young, but blood is thicker than water...that's why I really like playing gipsy music, adds Barnabás Kelemen.
At the gala they played a few violin duos by Béla Bartók, a composer who somehow contributed to make Barnabás and Katalin a couple also in real life.
At seventeen we got together thanks to the Bartók duos, and at that moment we realised we were made one for the other. We didn't know at that time what the other thought about music, we just realised it was perfect harmony, and the differences we had integrated with each other, she says.

The European Heritage Label goes to cultural heritage sites important to the history of the EU as a whole. European Heritage Label sites are also recognised for highlighting this European context, ensuring access for the public and organising awareness-raising activities.
Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Hungary was selected for the European Heritage Label in 2016.
The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music was established in 1875 by the outstanding composer and musician himself. It is a multi-faceted institution: an educational institution, an international university of musical arts and a concert centre. It brings our music heritage to the fore whilst holding true to its spirit of openness, creativity and innovation and its European and international character.
The Academy is housed in a 1907 building by Flóris Korb and Kálman Giergl, which is considered to be a masterpiece of Hungarian Secession. It integrates inter alia the Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre, the Kodály Institute and the Kodály Museum.

Der Pressechef Imre Szabó Stein erklärt: Das Gebäude entzieht sich jeder Definition, der Reichtum an Motiven und Ornamenten macht es einzigartig und das Ausmaß ihrer Bedeutung muss erst noch vollständig enthüllt werden. Mit den Schätzen der Vergangenheit versuchen wir, eine moderne Marke zu entwerfen.
Die Akademie, die 1875 von Liszt gegründet wurde, zog im Jahre 1907 in dieses wunderschöne Jugendstilgebäude. Viele der größten ungarischen Musiker wurden hier ausgebildet und viele Stars des 20. Jahrhunderts traten in dem atemberaubenden Konzertsaal auf.
Der Akademie-Präsident András Batta führt aus: Zahlreiche Musiker sind hier hergekommen, große russische Künstler, Richter, Rostropovich, David Oistrach. Sie liebten den Saal, seine besondere Atmosphäre. Da der Saal wie ein Glocke konstruiert ist, können sich Künstler und die Zuhörer näher kommen. Der Künstler ist der Klöppel und es ist so, als ob das Publikum diese Art Glockenschlag widerhallt.
Einige der heutigen, großen ungarischen Musiker spielten auf der Gala - von Pianist Bogányi über die Geiger Katalin Kokas und Barnabás Kelemen - die auch an der Akademie unterrichten.
Katalin Kokas unterstreicht: Das ist der Tempel der Musik, der Schrein. Ich empfinde immer das gleiche Glücksgefühl, wenn ich das Gebäude betrete. Das ist meine Alma Mater. Seit meinem 12. Lebensjahr bin ich hier ausgebildet worden. Alles was ich kann, habe ich hier gelernt und das gebe ich an meine Studenten weiter.
Barnabás Kelemen: Mein Großvater war in den dreißiger Jahren einer der einflussreichsten Zigeuner-Konzertmeister. Ich kenne ihn nur aus Schwarz-Weiß-Filmen. Meine Mutter erinnert sich kaum an ihn, er starb jung, aber Blut ist kein Wasser, deshalb liebe ich es, Zigeunermusik zu spielen.
Auf der Gala spielte das Paar einige Violinen-Duos von Béla Bartók. Der Komponist trug dazu bei, dass Barnabás und Katalin ein Paar im echten Leben wurden. Katalin Kokas: Im Alter von 17 Jahren kamen wir dank der Bartók-Duos zusammen. Das passierte in einem Moment in dem wir realisierten, dass wir füreinander gemacht waren. Wir wussten da noch nicht, was der andere über Musik dachte, aber wir merkten, dass es die perfekte Harmonie war und dass unsere Verschiedenheit sich ergänzte.

The Franz Liszt Academy of Music-famous buildings in Budapest part.no.2.
The Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Hungarian: Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem, often abbreviated as Zeneakadémia, Music Academy) is a concert hall and music conservatory in Budapest, Hungary, founded on November 14, 1875
The Academy was named after its founder only in 1925. Initially christened the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music, it was also called College of Music from 1919-1925.
Replacing the old Music Academy, the Academy moved into a building erected in 1907 at the corenr of Király Street and Ferenc Liszt Square. It serves as a centre for higher education, music training[1], and concert hall. The Art Nouveau style building is one of the most well-known in Budapest. It was designed by Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl at the request of Baron Gyula Wlassics, who was the Minister of Culture at that time. The façade is dominated by a statue of Liszt (sculpted by Alajos Stróbl). The inside of the building is decorated with frescoes, Zsolnay ceramics, and several statues (among them that of Béla Bartók and Frédéric Chopin). Originally the building also had stained glass windows, made by Miksa Róth

The Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Hungarian: Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem, often abbreviated as Zeneakadémia, Music Academy) is a concert hall and music conservatory in Budapest, Hungary, founded on November 14, 1875.
