Veterans Coming Home
WHYY has joined public media outlets across the country for a project known as “Veterans Coming Home.” This week starts with a two part First Look that explores issues affecting veterans. We begin with the more than 200,000 US military members who make the transition from active duty to civilian life each year. That transition, however, isn’t always seamless. But efforts are underway to help our 9/11 veterans come home.
A call to service
In the second part of our First Look, we meet a Wilmington man who is finally getting to live out his dream of joining the armed forces.
Clifford Jazz
Next month marks the 60th anniversary of the death of jazz musician and well known trumpeter, Clifford Brown. The Wilmington native died in a tragic car accident at the age of 25. His music however, lives on today at the DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, a yearly event that features national and local artists.
Teach me: The Groundskeeper
The sun is shining. The mercury is rising. All that means baseball is back at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. As the Blue Rocks embark on another season they’ll rely on an unsung hero. In this month’s Teach Me segment we’re talking grass, dirt, and lawnmowers. It’ll give you a whole new take on the old ballgame.
First Experience: Peter Saenger
For Newark artist Peter Saenger, pottery is more than just mugs and bowls. Saenger worked for decades taking his craft to new and exciting places. He fused his love of pottery with the skill of a sculptor to create something truly unique. We stopped by his home studio to showcase some beautiful pieces in our First Experience this week.
