Fredriksholm Fortress (Fredriksholm festning) was situated on an islet off Kristiansand, Norway. Today the former fortress is in ruins and the site is a popular place for sightseeing. Fredriksholm Fortress was located one kilometer north of the precursor, Christiansø Fortress on Gammeløya. Both fortresses were built to protect Flekkerøy port. The construction of Frederiksholm Fortress was begun in 1655. After the fort Christiansø was abandoned on 1 May 1658, the stones, building materials and other useful material were transferred to Fredriksholm. The new fortress was completed in 1662. It is named after Frederick III of Denmark.

The Dogs of Fram
Various scenes of the dogs at work and rest during the third Fram expedition (1910-1914). The dogs were picked up at Fredriksholm Island in Kristiansand, Norway before departure for Antarctica. At the island they had been fed well on horsemeat. (One horse was slaughtered every day as food for the dogs.) Once onboard Fram, the dogs were given water three times and food once per day and did reasonably well during the six month voyage to other end of the earth. Their strength was one of the keys to Roald Amundsen being the first person to reach the South Pole.

Møvik Fort / Batterie Vara. World War II fortress. Møvik Kristiansand. Hubsan X4 501S
The coastal artillery fortress was named Batterie Vara (MAB 6./502 Vara) by the Germans, when it was built by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. It was named after Major General Felix Vara, who was killed off Alderney in the English channel on 3 November 1941. After the war, the Norwegian Armed Forces named it Møvik fort.
