Lucerne Switzerland Travel Guide
A travel guide for visiting Lucerne in Switzerland. 9 of the best things to do in Lucerne including: Lucerne Railway Station, Lucerne Lion Monument, Glacier Garden, Bourbaki Panorama, Chapel Bridge, Lucernes Old Town, City Walls & Clock Tower, Stadkeller Restaurant, Mt. Pilatus Day Trip.
Lucerne has a very impressive main train station. It's been rebuilt, the facade of the old one is still here. But you'll find the train station will be your most convenient way to get in and out of Lucerne. There are tons of shops in it, and also the jumping off point for most buses that take you around the city. And the ferries that'll take you on the Golden Round Trip. And, as you can see by the departure sign, they have a lot of departures out of the station. The basement level of the train station is also home to one of Lucerne's latest open supermarkets. This Coop is open 'til 10pm everyday. It's also a great place to get chocolate, at Laderach. And cheap eats, if all those expensive places in the city have got you wallet broke, check out the Currywurst right here. Next to the train station, in this big, black, modern-looking building, that almost looks like a UFO landed, is Lucerne's Concert Hall and Art Museum. If you're a Star Trek fan, this building might remind you of the Borg cube, kinda looks like to me.
The biggest attraction in Lucerne, one 'cause it's big, and two 'cause this is where everybody comes, is the Lion Monument. This is a monument depicting the Swiss troops who died in 1792, in the French Revolution. It is a pretty sad lion, he's been impaled by a spear, and he's covering a shield over there, that depicts the French Monarchy. While it may not be the best attraction in Lucerne, 'cause it's certainly not the happiest, it is one that you have to come and see because everybody comes to see the sad lion. If you've watched any other of my Switzerland videos, you'll know I talk a lot about the fountains, and this city is no exception. In Lucerne, they have over 200 public fountains with running water from the mountains, tastes just like cold, refreshing Evian water. If you're thirsty, just come up to one of these fountains and you can use it, get some water, or maybe even wash your hands.
Just above the Lion Monument is the Glacier Garden. It's a natural rock formation that happened when glaciers moved over this part of Lucerne, many, many years ago. One of the interesting things that happens when glaciers go, you can see the scrape marks, but behind me there's also these potholes. There's a little one back here but there's a big one back there that's like nine meters deep. It's caused by the force of the water underneath the glacier. There's also a Glacier Museum, and a House of Mirrors. Admission's a little steep, but if you have the Swiss travel pass admission's free. The Hall of Mirrors, I'll say is very cool, because in this room it has the Alhambra Fountain in it. How many of me can you count? And no, this is not a special effect, this is really what this room looks like.
After you visit the Lion Monument, if you want some culture in the form of a big painting, you can visit the Bourbaki Panorama. It's in this nondescript building here, it is a 10 meter high, by 112 meter wrap around panoramic painting that is of the French internment, where the French army was interned in Switzerland back in 1891. It's very interesting, if you have the Swiss pass it's free, if not it's a small admission fee, just note that there's no air conditioning, so if it's hot then it's quite a heat wave inside.

It’s one of the world’s most charming towns in on a picturesque lake surrounded by majestic mountains they truly have it all -- famous for its well-preserved Old Town consisting of many blocks of medieval buildings richly decorated with painted murals showing village life and hunting scenes from the olden days making this like outdoor art gallery in all of this is set on a beautiful waterfront along the shores of Lake Lucerne and the River Reuss.
Lucerne on a Budget I Top Things to Do in Lucerne Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries I have ever traveled to. And considering Lucerne Switzerland was the last leg of my Euro trip, my budget that time was almost all cashed out. Good thing that my hotel was already pre-booked, I didn't need to include that in my remaining cash on-hand.
So while in Lucerne, I had to be very frugal and find the best ways to keep myself from spending too much and made use of my credit card.

I wanted to visit Lucerne since the first time I saw the wooden bridges in a tv show.. to me they seemed fo fascinating.
And they didn't disappoint:) I had very few disappointments an this trip really.. everything looked as nice as on pictures.. even better live:)
My sister went home so I explored this beautiful city on my own and it was easily done in a day. You could of course spend longer and go more in debt, but I did't have the time, as I made Lucerne a stop on one of my train travel days.
In the 5 hours I spent here I saw the famous wooden bridges and of course the chapel bridge. The old town and old town wall and towers. And had a personal little memorial for my grandmother at the Lion Memorial( löwendenkmal )

A day in Lucerne / Luzern A quick tour in part 2.
What can you see and do in Lucerne, Switzerland. A quick tour in Luzern part 2.
Luzern is not even a big city.
On most list it is high up for being one of the most beautifull cities in Switserland.
There is enough to see
and you can always take a boat trip on one of the most beautifull lakes in Switserland Vierwaltstättersee / lake lucerne
The most famous attraction is Chapel Bridge, Kapelbrücke. It is the oldest covered wooden bridge of Europe. The oldest surviving truss bridge on the world. It is built in an unusual diagonal shape over the river Reuss. Inside are paintings. Next to the bridge is the watertower. In history it was used for more than one thing. It was built as part of the city fortification. later as an archive, treasury, prison snd torture. Now it is the landmark of the city.
A little more up the river is the spreuer bridge / spreuer brücke. the oldest wooden bridge in Switerland. Also up are paintings called Dancing with the death. Walk this bridge it is so pretty. Next to it is the needle dam and the new power plant.
Hof church it is the parish church. It feels important walking up the stairs. Go inside to see the facade, Mary's altar with a relie dating from 1500 ans the souls'altar. And turn around for the organ.
Now it is only a small walk to the lion monument. It is a statue The dying lion of Lucerne. It is carved out of rock. It was a thank you gift to Swiss soldiers helping in the French revolution. Mark Twain described it the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world. And if you see its face you can see and feel the same.
Townhouse also a nice old building. Built in Italaina Renaissance style. The weekly market is still here.
Walk the Musegg Wall. The wall and its 9 towers are part of the historic fortification. The clock tower is the oldes tower. You can climb in 4 towers up. And walk the wall, its more next to the wall, for 4 towers. You have a nice view on the city, surroundings and the lake.
Walk the old town. It is not big. But the old houses and its paintings is breathtaking. There a some squares you need to sit for a drink or and a meal to take it all in.
Also to see and do.
Go up castle Gütsch. You can go up by train and have a very nice view on the city. It is now a hotel. You can sit down also only for coffee or tea.
There is are shops and a mall to do shopping. Alot off expensive swiss watches or knives to buy.
Walk along the promenade on Lake lucerne.
There are a few musea on different subjects too
Lucerne a nice city. An old city part, the wall, the wooden bridges and its lake.
I am filming with my cellphone and the battery stopped while charging so there is a part 1 too

One Day in Lucerne, Switzerland
We explored some of the historic sites around the Old Town area of Lucerne. On this walking tour we saw 700 year old covered wooden bridges, beautiful architecture, fountains, a monument carved right into a solid granite rock face and even climbed up an ancient stone tower to see beautiful views of the city. Despite the overcast weather, we had a wonderful time learning about the history of this part of Switzerland.

Lucerne, Switzerland: A walking tour around one of the most picturesque cities ever
We took several trains to get to Lucerne, where we took a walking tour and fell in love with Lucerne Lake's clear waters.
I hadn't seen my cousin in decades! The last time I had met her, I was the flower girl at her wedding. It had been too long! There was so much to catch up on, and it was awesome to meet her children, whom I'd obviously never met. I'm lucky to have family as closely knit as mine despite great distances.
Rob and I were only staying for a day in Lucerne, unfortunately, so we just went on a walking tour around the city. Lucerne is one of the definitely one of the most beautiful cities ever. Lake Lucerne, which runs through the city, had amazingly clear green water that we could sit and stare at for hours.
Switzerland really surprised us. It's on our list of countries to revisit for sure, although we'll have to do some saving -- it's definitely not a cheap place to visit!
