Basel, Switzerland Travel Video
Basel is Switzerland's oldest university city. Historic landmarks of the city include the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. During a walk through the old town, past small boutiques, antique book shops but also shops of modern designers, a visit to the Läckerli Huus to try the traditional Basel honey cake is well worth your while. Basel is tradition-conscious and open-minded at the same time, a fact born out by several modern buildings designed by renowned architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Mario Botta, Diener & Diener and Richard Meyer.
Almost 40 museums make Basel the city with the highest density of museums in the country. Internationally known museums, such as the Basel Art Museum, the museum devoted to the iron sculptor Jean Tinguely, the Fondation Beyeler and the Museum of Cultures attract a great many visitors, as do several galleries and playhouses. Basel is among other things home to the symphony orchestra and the chamber orchestra as well as the musical theatre featuring international productions. And a wide range of classical and contemporary productions are shown on the stages of the Basel Theatre and the Playhouse.
Visiting BASEL 2 | Exploring Basel (Switzerland) - a walking tour video
In this video, I'll bring you around with a walking tour in Basel and show you the city's nicest streets, squares and corners.
Basel or Basle, French: Bâle; Italian: Basilea; Romansh: Basilea, is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the river Rhine. Basel is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zürich and Geneva) with about 180,000 inhabitants.
Located where the Swiss, French and German borders meet, Basel also has suburbs in France and Germany. As of 2016, the Swiss Basel agglomeration was the third-largest in Switzerland, with a population of 541,000 in 74 municipalities in Switzerland (municipal count as of 2018). The initiative Trinational Eurodistrict Basel (TEB) of 62 suburban communes including municipalities in neighboring countries, counted 829,000 inhabitants in 2007.
The official language of Basel is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local Basel German dialect.
The city is known for its many internationally renowned museums, ranging from the Kunstmuseum, the first collection of art accessible to the public in Europe (1661) and the largest museum of art in the whole of Switzerland, to the Fondation Beyeler (located in Riehen). The University of Basel, Switzerland's oldest university (founded in 1460), and the city's centuries-long commitment to humanism, have made Basel a safe haven at times of political unrest in other parts of Europe for such notable people as Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Holbein family, Friedrich Nietzsche and in the 20th century also Hermann Hesse and Karl Jaspers.

24 Hour Guide to Basel, Switzerland
Art. Culture. History. Food. Luxury. The Rhine River. Basel has a lot going on and I had limited time to see it so I took in the highlights as fast as I could. My homebase was the Hotel Nomad, a trendy boutique with easy access to top sites like the Altstadt, or old city, the Marktplatz which has a farmer's market, Johann Wanner Christmas shop, the Kunstmuseum Basel, Fondation Beyeler and the Rhine River. We took river ferries to cross to Klein Basel, a funky neighborhood with a lot of great shops, cafes and of course, the notable Ueli Brewery.
Check out this travel guide for how to see some of Basel's hotspots, in just 24 hours!

Basel, Switzerland Travel Guide - City Hall of Basel
Take a tour of City Hall of Basel in Basel, Switzerland -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Walk through Basel's Marktplatz, and you can't help but be drawn to the splendor of the bright and beautiful Rathaus.
The Rathaus, or city hall building, was constructed in various centuries and in various styles, making it a true architectural fusion.
The middle section was constructed in the early 16th century, and the Art Nouveau towers on either side were added in 1904.
Sculptures and paneling colorfully recount the history of the city.
The outer walls of the Rathaus are adorned with beautiful murals, as is the inner courtyard.
Some buildings represent a mere point in history; the poetic Rathaus tells the story of the city of Basel.

Basel, Switzerland quick look
Basel, Switzerland is a great international city right on the border with France and Germany, and a major railroad hub. If you are passing through by train, while you're changing trains, perhaps you'll have enough time to take a look at the city of Basel.
Click to subscribe:
Switzerland playlist In our case we only had a hour and a half between trains, but you can leave your luggage of the station, hop in a taxi and head right into downtown Basel which is very close to the train station, of course.
Our driver dropped us off at Claraplatz, only took about ten minutes to get here from the station. And this is part of the new town. You see it's a lovely little square and flowers and benches and shops around it, and the tram l, ine lots of trams running through Basel. Trams make an ideal way to travel for visitors with little time, because the service is frequent s, o we figured okay, let's hop on the tram and head into the Old Town, crossing the river Rhine.
You'll find that you can see the highlights of Basel in just about one hour, and if you're really pressed for time head straight for the main square of the Old Town, the Marktplatz, the marketplace, and you'll find there's food stands, lots of people cheese and flowers for sale, and maybe you can get a quick lunch at the sausage stand. And don't worry about the schedule, because this market is open every day of the week.
Of course you could spend several days enjoying Basel and its surroundings. There is so much to see here. For example, you could visit forty different museums and soak up the multicultural ambience of the city with that international location at the border of Switzerland, France and Germany. And with it all, they claim a Mediterranean flair, with three hundred days of sunshine a year and a fair temperate climate. Basel is generally counted among the cities with the highest standard of living in the world, so you could really enjoy an extended stay here. However, in our case we're just changing trains so we're giving you a quick look.
