Reviews of FREEDOM in New Zealand - Christchurch & Dunedin
World acclaimed documentary film, FREEDOM makes its debut in NZ after a successful tour in 8 other countries; Australia, England, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, South Africa, the Philippines and Malaysia. Starting off in Christchurch, where not less than two months ago, a horrendous terrorist attack fuelled by hate was carried out on two mosques killing 50 innocent Muslims. In the wake of a global rise of anti-Muslim sentiments, film directors Julien Drolon & Zara Shafie are giving a voice to a global community of converts during a crucial time when Islam needs to be more understood and appreciated as a religion and a way of life. This unique documentary features 25 men and 25 women from different racial background from countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, China, Japan, Kenya, England, France, Germany, Poland, Peru, Mexico, Australia and much more. It features entrepreneurs, educators, actors, environmentalists, lawyers etc…- all of them speaking from the very depths of theirs souls on their perspectives on FREEDOM and ISLAM.

Waikouaiti, Otago, NZ. Carl Scott gives a guided tour of the new colony battery cages.
Taken early in 2012, this movie shows Carl Scott inside the shed at Mainland Poultry Ltd. in Waikouaiti, Otago, NZ, which contains the controversial new so-called 'colony' or 'enriched' battery cages, which are being trialled there. It has been proposed by the egg industry, that these will become the NZ-wide replacement for standard battery cages.
This cage trial is being funded to the tune of $390,000 by the NZ taxpayer, yet Mainland has consistently refused to allow the media to see them. Carl thought the public had a right to see what they were spending their money on, so he and some friends obtained some footage themselves. Some of the footage ended up being shown on TV3's 'Campbell Live' show. In this short movie, Carl gives us a guided tour, and describes what he thinks of the cages.
A Horizon poll conducted last year indicated that 79% of Kiwis are opposed to cages. Also, over 33,000 submissions were made last year to the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC), the Minister for Primary Industries, David Carter, and Prime Minister, John Key, opposing cages. Despite all this, every indication is that the National Government are going to ignore the NZ public and do whatever they like.
It would seem that they would rather kowtow to a handful of egg farmers, (there are only approximately 40 egg farms in NZ using cages), than to listen to the people of NZ, or to do the right thing, and end the suffering of the battery hens. Carter is about to announce the latest 'Code of Welfare for Layer Hens' and is expected to approve the introduction of the colony battery cages.
SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE HENS?
BE THE CHANGE!
First and foremost, don't buy cage eggs!!! You can also tell your friends and family, workmates, etc. about the issue, and encourage them to do the same.
TAKE ACTION!
If you don't want colony battery hen cages to become the future prisons for New Zealand's 3 million battery hens, then please visit and sign an e-card to the Leader of the Opposition, Labour's David Shearer, to say NO to cruel colony cages. If his party will commit to banning all cages, it might help put the pressure on National to do the same. And if Labour win next election, we will be able to hold them to their promise.
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?
Look for products or meals containing egg. If it doesn't state that the eggs are free range, then you can almost guarantee they come from a battery farm.
You can ask your local supermarket, cafe, restaurant, school, or workplace to stop using or selling cage eggs. Many outlets have a suggestion box.
Consider the options: Barn eggs are better than cage eggs. Free range is better again. Organic free range is better still. You could even consider having your own little flock of hens in your back yard (But make sure you do your homework first! It is not as easy as many people think).
But if you really care about animals, you could consider going Vegan. Even on the best Organic, free range egg farms, all of the male chicks are killed when they are only one or two days old. In NZ they are either ground up alive, or gassed. This is simply because roosters don't lay eggs, and the egg-laying breeds of chicken don't grow fast enough to make them profitable for their meat. The hens are also killed at only 18 months to 2 years of age, once their egg production begins to decline. The normal life expectancy of a chicken is around 10 years.
There are commercially available egg-replacers in most supermarkets. There are many alternatives to using eggs in cooking or baking. It is much easier to be Vegan than most people think, and it feels good to be 100% cruelty free.

freedom over comfort // New Zealand Travel Film
This past summer, I traveled to a country that I have been fascinated by for many years. My sister and I went to the south island of New Zealand, rented a Jucy van for 15 days and drove around the island.
We started in Christchurch and then headed south to Moeraki, Dunedin and eventually the Catlins area. We were amazed by the diversity of the terrain on this side of the country. We experienced beaches, lighthouses, rainforests, waterfalls, cities and everything else in between.
From there, we started to traverse across the country and found ourselves in arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the world, Te Anau and the Milford Sound. Getting out on the water via a Jucy cruise was an experience I will never forget.
From there, we started to head back towards the equator and hit locations like Queenstown, Glenorchy, Mt. Aspiring National Park, Wanaka and finally Mt. Cook National Park. With the winter rapidly approaching, we decided to do the Mueller Hut hike and stay overnight in a small hut on the top of a mountain surrounded by glaciers.
I cannot say enough good things about the country and how much you learn from traveling and being outside your comfort zone. Thank you so much to my little sister, Olivia, for entrusting me as her older brother to take her along on this trip and have someone to share my happiness with.
I was unable to fit all of our adventures in this film and its hard to even capture the raw and pure beauty of a place like this through a digital camera lens, but I hope you enjoy the video and that it inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and live your life.
We only have one.
I have been inspired by this song for many years now as a creative and I am glad that I have finally found a story that has significant enough meaning to use it with.

DUNEDIN Vacation Travel Guide: Wildlife l New Zealand Cruise Vlog l Ep. 9
After doing some research before leaving on this cruise, I discovered that there is a possibility to see penguins while visiting Dunedin. So, I booked this tour through Norwegian Cruise Line though most cruise lines offer this exact tour. The tour is called:
NATURE’S WONDERS WILDLIFE SAFARI and here is the description from NCL's website:
“A scenic drive takes you past the charming towns of Sawyer's Bay, Roseneath and St. Leonard's, which all rest along the shores of beautiful Otago Harbor. Your drive then continues along the craggy coastline to Natures Wonders, located just beyond Taiaroa Head.
Arriving at the Center's Reception area, you'll board an 8-wheel drive vehicle (Argo), built specifically to take you places that are normally inaccessible, or a mini coach, to start your tour of the farm. You will swap vehicles half way through the tour.
The Otago Peninsula headland is arguably the most precious wildlife habitat in New Zealand and the farm owned by the Reid family is right on the forefront of this headland. Here, amidst truly spectacular scenery, the world's rarest penguins, the yellow-eyed Hoiho, the little blue penguins, the New Zealand fur seals, and the Spotted Shags all live in harmony.
Stop by the mythical Maui's Footprint location which offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Otago Peninsula. Descending from a height of 620 feet above sea level, you’ll stop at a breeding colony of Cormorants, also Spotted Shag, found nestled on a rugged cliff face that rises directly above the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
You’ll find a breeding colony of New Zealand Fur seals. It's a definite treat to watch them in their natural habitat, basking on the rocks and swimming in the pools. A beachfront ride will then bring you to Penguin Beach, where you'll be able to view little blue penguins in their nests, and if you are lucky, perhaps spot some very rare and shy yellow-eyed penguins.
Your route also ascends from the beach to the highest point on the farm. At 659 feet above sea level, this spot affords an absolutely amazing 360-degree view of this awesome peninsula and its remarkable natural setting.
Back in Dunedin, you’ll have a brief tour of some of the city's highlights before returning to the pier.”
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

We took a whitewater rafting trip down the Mohaka River near Napier, NZ and found RVers camping along the way. We even met someone with a custom-made RV with a slide-out... very rare in NZ.
We'll be picking up our own campervan in Cairns in less than a week! We can't wait. :)

If you're planning an RV trip to Australia or New Zealand, we loved our Maui campervan!
Before we pick up our campervan (that's what us Aussies call a small motorhome ????), we'll be on a 2-week vacation in yet another gigantic vehicle... a cruise ship. :)
Once we hit the road, we'll be sharing every aspect of our 2,700-kilometer drive from the Great Barrier Reef back to Sydney. We'll compare the systems on our campervan to North American RVs, experience a mix of Holiday Parks and Free Camping and of course we'll feature the famous beauty and hospitality of Oz.
Thanks for following along. We hope our trip is the great adventure we've been dreaming of.
