Sven & Torty's Journey to Zhanjiang - Episode 3: Something Old, Something New
Hi, welcome back for another episode about Zhanjing. This is the last episode of this travel series, also the most exciting one.
In this episode, Sven and I visited most of the local attractions in the city.
We also to went to Techeng Island to have a walk, but because of the departure schedule of the ferry, we only had 15 minutes there. It was still amazing to see the city from the island. We also visited Zhanjiang Fisherman's Wharf, a new project in the city, it looks pretty cool.
I learned more about this city, the city isn't that fancy compare to other big cities in China, but it has its own charm. It was such a great experience.
If you are planning to visit the city, I hope our series could give you some ideas where to go.

Welcome back for another episode of our travel series of Zhanjiang. In this episode, we will explore the history of Zhanjiang, which it was called Kwangchowan back then.
Thank to Curator Mr. Hu for giving us such amazing tour. I was really impress by its history and I have learned even more about this city.

Why Chinese Navy sets up support base in Djibouti
The Chinese Navy will soon establish its first overseas support base in Djibouti, as ships carrying military personnel for the base left Zhanjiang in southern China's Guangdong Province for the Horn of Africa country on Tuesday. The base will enable China to better fulfill its international obligations in conducting escort missions, peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing on Wednesday.

USA WORRIED OVER CHINESE BASE IN DJIBOUTI
China has dispatched troops to Djibouti in advance of formally establishing the country's first overseas military base.
Two Chinese Navy warships left the port of Zhanjiang on Tuesday, taking an undisclosed number of military personnel on the journey across the Indian Ocean.
An editorial Wednesday in the state-run Global Times stressed the importance of the new Djibouti facility -- in the strategically located Horn of Africa -- to the Chinese military.
Certainly this is the People's Liberation Army's first overseas base and we will base troops there. It's not a commercial resupply point... This base can support Chinese Navy to go farther, so it means a lot, said the paper.
The Global Times said the main role of the base would be to support Chinese warships operating in the region in anti-piracy and humanitarian operations.
It's not about seeking to control the world, said the editorial.
At a regular press briefing Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang described the base as part of ongoing efforts to help bring peace and security to the region.
China has been deploying naval ships to waters off Somalia in the Gulf of Aden to conduct escorting missions since 2008, said Geng. The completion and operation of the base will help China better fulfill its international obligations in conducting escorting missions and humanitarian assistance ... It will also help promote economic and social development in Djibouti.
China has expanded its military ties across Africa in recent years. According to a report by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), cooperation with Africa on peace and security is now an explicit part of Beijing's foreign policy.
In 2015 Chinese President Xi Jinping committed 8,000 troops to the UN peacekeeping standby force — one fifth of the 40,000 total troops committed by 50 nations — China also pledged $100 million to the African Union standby force and $1 billion to establish the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund.
More than 2,500 Chinese combat-ready soldiers and police officers are now deployed in blue-helmet missions across the African continent, with the largest deployments in South Sudan (1,051), Liberia (666), and Mali (402), according to the ECFR.
Blue-helmet deployments give the PLA a chance to build up field experience abroad -- and to help secure Chinese economic interests in places such as South Sudan, said the ECFR report.
Africa is home to an estimated one million Chinese nationals, with many employed in infrastructure projects backed by the Chinese government.
China's involvement in African security is a product of a wider transformation of China's national defense policy. It is taking on a global outlook ... and incorporating new concepts such as the protection of overseas interests and open seas protection, said the ECFR report.
China joins the US, France and Japan, among others, with permanent bases in Djibouti, a former French colony with a population of less than one million residents.
Though small in both population and size, Djibouti's position on the tip of the Horn of Africa offers strategic access to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The strait, which is only 18 miles wide at its narrowest point, connects the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean beyond.
One of the world's most important sea lanes, millions of barrels of oil and petroleum products pass through the strait daily, according to GlobalSecurity.org.
US Marine Corps Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, the head of the Pentagon's Africa Command, stressed Djibouti's location during a visit to the US Camp Lemonnier garrison there earlier this year.
This particular piece of geography is very, very important to our strategic interests, Waldhauser said in joint appearance with US Defense Secretary James Mattis.
The US military has some 4,000 troops at Camp Lemonnier, a 100-acre base for which it signed a 10-year, $630 million lease in 2014, according to media reports.
Elsewhere in Djibouti, the US military operates the Chabelley Airfield, from which the Pentagon stages drone airstrikes, likely into Somalia and across the Bab el-Mandeb Strait into Yemen, according to the Center for the Study of the Drone at Bard College in New York. The Pentagon i

China's Indian Ocean Ambitions again try to dominate in south china sea in Indian ocean region!
On July 11, Beijing dispatched Chinese troops from the port of Zhanjiang in Guangdong province with orders to begin constructing the base at Djibouti. The announcement follows on a previous January 21 announcement of an agreement with Djibouti to host what the Chinese Foreign Ministry termed a logistics and fast evacuation base.
Widely described in the western media as China's first overseas base, the facility, still in the process of being constructed, stops short of being a full-fledged military base, but is widely interpreted as the first step in a significant build-up of Chinese military power in the Indian Ocean.
Under the agreement with Djibouti, China can station up to 10,000 troops in its facility there, although the initial deployment will fall far short of that number. The new base comes on the heel of a $14 billion, Chinese financed railroad project, which links the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa with Djibouti, as well as an expansion of port facilities in Djibouti. The rail line represents Ethiopia's only direct transportation link to the Indian Ocean.
The Chinese facility is only a few miles away from the U.S. base at Camp Lemonnier. Although the U.S. maintains a range of small outposts and air facilities in Africa, Camp Lemonnier is the only fully operational American base on the African continent. The Chinese facility joins bases operated by Italy, France, Spain and Japan. In addition, Saudi Arabia has announced that it too will build a military base in Djibouti.

China and Russia together are formidable and unbeatable, so any third country seeking dominance over the West Pacific should think twice, China's state-run media warned, in the context of the two countries' ongoing joint military drills.

China just sent troops to Djibouti to establish its first overseas military base, China is known for generally keeping to itself, but these days it's showing more and more interest in Djibouti -- a small country of fewer than 1 million people located on the Horn of Africa.
On Tuesday, following an official ceremony in the port of Zhanjiang, the commander of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) sent troops to begin the construction of a permanent overseas base in Djibouti -- China's first-ever overseas military base.
The Chinese government announced plans for the base in 2015, and since then have repeatedly stressed its peaceful intentions. Rather than refer to it as a military base, Chinese state media has dubbed it a support base that will ensure China's performance of missions, such as escorting, peace-keeping, and humanitarian aid in Africa and west Asia.

STORYLINE:
A US naval warship departed for Japan on Saturday after spending four days on a port visit in Ho Chi Minh City, the first US Navy vessel to have done so since the Vietnam War ended nearly 30 years ago.
The USS Vandergrift sailed into dock on Wednesday signaling a new era of relations between the former foes.
The historic visit comes at a time when the United States and Vietnam have been fostering diplomatic and economic ties and marks a new attempt at establishing military cooperation.
The four-day port call follows a landmark meeting last week by Vietnamese Defence Minister Pham Van Tra and US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld - the first time a senior Vietnamese military official has visited Washington.
Bilateral ties have been steadily expanding since diplomatic relations were established in 1995.
The frigate's arrival was symbolic of both nations' efforts to move into a new era of cooperation.
Some Vietnamese say the port call is welcome, demonstrating that old wounds have finally healed following the conflict that killed 58-thousand Americans and three (M) million Vietnamese.
Many of the sailors weren't even born when the Vietnam War ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon, the capital of US-backed South Vietnam.
The city was later renamed after Communist leader Ho Chi Minh.
The frigate, part of the US Navy's Seventh Fleet, came from Yokosuka, Japan.
Captained by Commander Richard Rogers, the 41-hundred-ton guided-missile ship carries about 200 crew members.

USA: Suspect arrested for arson attack on mosque frequented by Orlando shooter
Representatives of the St. Lucie County sheriff's office held a press conference at the sheriff's headquarters in Fort Pierce, Florida, Wednesday, where they confirmed that the Tuesday's attack on the Islamic Centre of Fort Pierce was an arson case, adding that they had arrested a suspect.
