The French River (French: Rivière des Français or in Ojibway Wemitigoj-Sibi) is a river in Central Ontario, Canada. It flows 110 kilometres (68 mi) from Lake Nipissing west to Georgian Bay.[1] The river largely follows the boundary between the Parry Sound District and the Sudbury District, and in most contexts is considered the dividing line between Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The French River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1986.The French River flows through typical Canadian Shield country, in many places exposing rugged glaciated rock but also through heavily forested areas on the upper portion. The mouth of the river contains countless islands and numerous channels which vary from narrow, enclosed steep-walled gorges, falls and rapids, to broad expanses of open water.
Tributaries of this river include the:
Wanapitei River
Pillow River
Murdock River
Wolseley River
Little French River
Pickerel River
Restoule River
Hall Riveras used as a transportation corridor by the Algonquian peoples of this region. The Ojibwa named this the French River because it became associated with French explorers of the 17th century, including Étienne Brûlé, Samuel de Champlain and Pierre-Esprit Radisson, and missionaries.
Other explorers who later followed this route included Simon Fraser, Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson.
Together with the Ottawa and Mattawa Rivers, the French River formed part of the water highway from Montreal to Lake Superior in the days of the fur trade. It remained a major canoe route until about 1820. Around 1855,[2] the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada provided newfound access to the area and the Georgian Bay. This led to increased exploration and interest for fishing and logging during the era of the Industrial Revolution. After the Great Chicago Fire in 1871,[3] there was a boom in logging along with the creation of Lumber barons in the Great Lakes. The French River was ripe for the picking with its seemingly inexhaustible supply of timber and proximity to the American markets.[4]
Near the end of the 19th century, logging became the primary activity in the area. It was later settled as a summer tourist and recreation area. For this reason, the French River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1985.[5] Because of the rugged nature of the Canadian Shield country surrounding this river, large parts of this river remain relatively untouched and it is now a popular location for recreational canoeing, kayaking, photography, camping, fishing and boating.
Following bouts of overfishing, in the 1994 the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources placed a slot limit on fishing to protect prime breeding year classes and increase the trophy fish population in the French River.

Ice Fishing / Northern Pike / French River Provincial Park
I met up with my Brother in Law and a friend and drove to Hartley Bay in the boundaries of French River Provincial Park. A popular location for paddlers to put in their canoe and paddle the historic French River Canoe Route. We drilled many holes in the ice in search of the popular Crappie but were unable to catch any. I hooked a few small perch and then finally A Northern Pike. We ended the day with 5 Pike keeping only 3 to take home.

2016 - French River - Canoe Expedition - Ontario - Canada
Me, my brother and two friends of ours paddled the entire French River from North Bay [Park Champlain] to the Georgian Bay and up the Key River to Key River village. This trip is about 160 Kilometers and we took 12 days to enjoy it properly.
Watching all the movies Bill Mason made and the Northern Wilderness series of Ray Mears inspired us to embark on this journey. Clearly it has much history and is strongly connected to all the tales of the Voyageurs and the Coureur du Bois. We really learned how to make the journey matter, rather than the destination. :-)

French River Canoe Trip Ontario Canada 2017
This is a video of our four day canoe and fishing trip on the French River in Ontario Canada.
This was a heavy gear trip with a lot of camp life. However, we did get to see a good portion of the river. Next trip will be lighter gear with more traveling.
We experienced it all. Sun, wind, and rain. It was a great trip.
FYI- This entire video was shot on an iPhone with a squid legs tripod. Its also the first time I've ever tried to edit a video.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy!

5 Day Back Country Canoe Trip - Killarney Provincial Park, Ontario Canada 2018
For those of you who wish you could watch another 15 minutes from that trip, you are in luck. Caitlin made her own version with all the scenes I cut out and posted her film on The Timber Life channel here,
Our first stop was Killarney Outfitters. We’ve been renting canoes and picking up last minute gear from them for many years so it was a real pleasure to get to meet the owner Ted who helps us pick a new camp stove.
We got an MSR Dragonfly stove and it's awesome. Making coffee and cooking is so much quicker than starting a fire and since the fire ban had just lifted we wanted to be careful with having open fires
Our Favorite Stove:
Ted also gave us a Firefly water bottle/flashlight to test and we really liked it as well. It’s a local company and a very clever idea so we hope they do well. fireflyoutdoors.ca
With a few more items in our cart and the canoe rental sorted, we were ready for adventure.
We pushed off from George Lake around 11 am. After two short portages and a beautiful day of canoeing, we arrived at the far island on Killarney Lake where we decided to camp for the night. We quickly set up camp and went for a swim.
Cooking was easy this trip as Harvest Foodworks gave us a bunch of dehydrated meals to test out that were delicious. harvestfoodworks.com
Since we were only camping in this location one night we didn’t bother putting a tarp over us and that night was an incredible thunderstorm and pouring rain. Luckily our Marmot Limelight 2p kept us dry.
The tent we use:
After a relaxing morning, we packed up and headed to OSA lake where we camped for another 4 nights.
Over the course of the trip and pleasure paddles, we paddled 54km and walked 1,150m of portage trail (+ multiple trips)
How you enjoy the video.
