Climbing Frenchman Peak ( Esperance )
Frenchman Peak was named by surveyor Alexander Forest during an expedition in search of good country for pasture in 1870. The peak’s shape was thought to resemble the hats worn by French troops in the 1800s.
A large cave near the summit is thought to have formed by wave action and underwater currents during a period some 40 million years ago when sea levels were at least 300 metres above their current level and the peaks of Cape Le Grand were largely submerged. Frenchman's Peak is approx 278 metres and is an climb and there is a cave at the top which has 360o views of the surrounds including ocean and bushland

Esperance, Western Australia
Beautiful Esperance. A place none of us had ever visited yet longed to for quite some time.
Known for its pure white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise water, it is 720 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia and has a history dating back to 1792 after French explorers made landfall whilst taking shelter from a storm. The town itself being named after the ship - Espérance - which is French for “hope”.
We spent a week in October 2017 exploring the town and its surrounds and found so much more than the cliche scenes of kangaroos on Lucky Bay beach.
Our highlight without a doubt would be climbing Frenchman Peak - standing 262 metres above sea level in the incredible Cape Le Grand National Park. With very strong wind, this deceptively steep mountain was definitely a challenge - particularly for me as I have a slight fear of heights. The reward was a stunning view and a great sense of achievement.

MADELISANL in Esperance
In December 2009 reisden we in West Australie. Via the Great Ocean Drive komen we bij Twilight Beach. We reizen westwaarts naar Hopetoun. Daar bezoeken we het Fitzgerald River National Park en spelen de kinderen in de lokale speeltuin.

Esperance STONEHENGE ( Western Australia )
Esperance Stonehenge.
A must see, full size replica of the original Stonehenge in the UK, as it would have looked around 1950BC. Esperance Stonehenge is situated 10 minutes drive from Esperance townsite (15 km east), enroute to Cape Le Grand National Park on Merivale Road. This is exactly how Stonehenge would have looked 5000 years ago
The 2 Stonehenges are separated by more than 15,000km and 4000 years of history. Esperance Farming couple (Kim & Jillian Beale) built the world's first full-size stone replica of Stonehenge on their 431 ha property in 2011 at a cost of $1.4 million. They thought that it would be a great idea to diversify their income. The couple added the tourist attraction to the 400 head of cattle they run on the 431ha property.
Some say that this Stonehenge is more beautiful than the original.
It features 137 locally cut pink granite stones, the largest topping 7.7m and weighing 53 tonnes. All the 1,200 cubic metres of stone was quarried locally.
Overlooks picturesque Esperance Bay and is now Esperance's greatest tourist attractions and is set to stand here for thousands of years.

ESPERANCE - FREE CAMPING LIKE NO OTHER - Ep.78 - Roadtrip Australia
Well, after a long awaited 2 years we finally made it into Esperance! We had decided to splurge and book ourselves into a van park for a week so we could really get a feel for the area and simply relax. Our van park of choice was the ‘Esperance Bay Holiday Park’ - they had a great deal on during our stay which was pay 6, stay 7.
We explored all the beaches along the Great Ocean drive, which was fantastic. Clear blue waters and we liked the fact that each beach was uniquely different to the previous one. With calm bays, surf beaches, rocky beaches, beaches with gully’s / rock-pools etc. Rusty loved the fact she was allowed on 9/10 of those beaches too! We fished, we sun baked, we explored and generally had a great week at Esperance!
The weather wasn’t the best with only about 50% of our stay, we had the sun out, but we were very lucky to have a couple of gorgeous days to really see the true Esperance beauty.
Cape Le Grand National Park
We waited for a nice sunny day to visit Cape Le Grand, day tripping in from Esperance. Having our annual national parks pass, meant we were waved right through the pay station which was great. We headed straight to Lucky bay in search of those popular kangaroos on the beach. We saw 2 not far down the beach, but they were surrounded by lots of tourists. We decided we would come back here last, before we headed out to try and find some more Kangaroos.
We drove around checking out all the bays and beaches. It was quite windy, so it didn’t make too many of the beaches, that inviting for a swim. BUT we had sunshine, so we weren’t complaining. Cape Le Grand beach was nice and easy to drive onto. Driving a few kilometers up and back along the beach, listening to the squeaky white sand under the tires.
We conquered the small steep hike up to Frenchman’s peak. It was really leg burning getting to the summit. Be sure to climb in and visit the mammoth cave up there. It was HUGE. We then trekked up another few minutes to reach the actual summit. It was very windy up top, so we had to clutch our hats so they didn’t fly off. All up, it took us about 50 minutes with a 10 minute rest up the top.
Before leaving Cape Le Grand, we ducked up the road and back to Lucky bay in the hope of scoring that iconic kangaroo shot! We had both agreed we would drive onto the beach (now the tide was going out) and try to find one. Well it didn’t take long, only 30 seconds on the sand we spotted some. We whipped out our camera’s and got the million dollar shot. In all seriousness, they are cute and very friendly, but please remember they are wild and DO NOT feed them (like we spotted a few people doing).
All up, we loved Cape Le Grand and hope to revisit it the future and explore a little more.
