Myanmar: Bagan, Mandalay, Yangon (2018)
January 2018. The country only really opened up a few years ago. So wanted to explore before the mass waves of tourists arrive. Was in a rush so squeezed in what I could in 5 days.
Itinerary:
Day 1: arrived Yangon in morning, brief city tour in friend's car, University of Yangon, Inya Lake, overnight bus to Bagan
Day 2 - Bagan exploration: rented electric scooter from hotel, temple hopping, dinner at Shwe Ou Food Garden (New Bagan) (try the home made ice cream)
Day 3: morning temple hopping, midday bus to Mandalay, dinner at Shan Ma Ma, walked around palace at night, Mandalay Marionettes puppet show
Day 4: Daw Shan Noodle breakfast, U Bein bridge, Mandalay Hill, Golden Duck restaurant, Mandalay Palace, overnight bus to Yangon
Day 5: Yangon morning street food, walk around CBD, National Museum, Schwedagon pagoda (go in late afternoon to see it in both daylight and evening)
Day 6: morning flight out of Yangon
General tips:
-Insect repellent at all times, especially in the cities
-Overnight inter-city buses are extremely cold (turn AC to 16dec C for some reason) - bring warm clothes onto bus
-Yangon traffic is nuts - budget plenty of time to get from CBD to inter-city bus station
-Bagan area is pretty small so doesn't matter whether you stay in Old Bagan, Nyang U, New Bagan etc - so long as you have electric scooter
-Temple entrance requires covered shoulders and knees - sapoe (traditional dress for men) is actually quite comfortable and wearing shorts underneath helps with hot weather
-Temple entrance also requires barefoot so wear flip flops for convenience
-Don't step on broken glass or an ant's nest when in barefoot...like I did...
-Many ATMs in Mandalay didn't accept my Citibank card - better to withdraw more every time, or prepare more USD

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Yangon to Bagan By Bus | JJ Express VIP Overnight Coach, Myanmar
There are multiple ways to get from Yangon to Bagan — bus, train or plane. Considering cost, convenience, and duration, going from Yangon to Bagan by bus is the undeniable winner. Short daily flights within Myanmar are available, but are astronomically priced. Nope. The train is the cheapest option, but takes a hellish 17 hours. No thanks. Several bus companies run overnight between the two regions, costing just over $20 USD per person and last a mild 9 hours. We’ll take it.
We decided to go from Yangon to Bagan by JJ Express Overnight Coach, a popular VIP Luxury Bus operator that features reclining seats, AC, a (strange) complimentary snack box, and a HUGE list of American movies. We’ve come to love our overnight bus rides. :)

Hi friends! We’re Braden & Taylor, a newlywed couple from California living with a BAD case of the travel bug. In Fall 2018, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and packed two tiny suitcases to find out what it truly means to live life to the fullest. First and foremost, we vlog for ourselves — our channel is a living picture book of the memories we collect over the next months and years around the globe, traveling to over 60 countries by 2020. If there’s a place we haven’t been, it’s on our list!
Secondly, we document our life on the road for family, friends and strangers alike — if our videos help pass on the travel influenza, then we’ve done our job. ???? We don’t know where this trip will take us, but we promise to ourselves and to you that we will always present both the beautiful and the ugly, because no trip is perfect, and neither is our world. One thing to do in Bagan Myanmar is to see a sunset from one of the tallest temples. It can get crowded but it's an astonishing sight, don't miss it.
You'll want to stay more than a few days in Bagan, I was there for 5 days and it still wasn't enough. Peace, good food, kind people and divine moments what else could you want?
Bagan has the largest concentration of Buddhist temples and ruins in the world. At its highest point, the area had more than 10 thousand temples, of which less than 3 thousand remain today.

We COULDN'T BELIEVE Our Eyes! | The Best Temples In Bagan, Myanmar
Looking for the best temples in Bagan, Myanmar? We spent 5 days in the ancient city and made it our goal to visit them all! It’s a fact—no image, video, or memory of Bagan, Myanmar can come close to portraying the magic that quite literally smacks you in the face upon arrival. Jaws were dropped, goosebumps were raised, tears were shed—this place is no joke.
We rented e-bikes for 4,000 kyat per person/per day in New Bagan and headed out on a full day, self-guided adventure, stopping off at all of the major players (Thatbyinnyu Temple, Ananda Temple, Dhammayangyi Temple, etc.) while making sure to cruise through the smaller, distant temples that you can claim all to yourselves (the latter was much more our style). Entrance to the historical region costs 25,000 kyat for foreigners, a small fee considering you’re good for 5-day unlimited use. You better believe we used every last day. :)

MYANMAR: RESTRICTED TEMPLES IN BAGAN 2018 | WE BROKE IN | Sofian Worldwide #32
Bagan Myanmar 2018: Hello Friends! In this video I will guide you through Bagan, the temple city in Myanmar :) There are countless temples in Bagan, you can't visit that many. That's why we set out to find the temples that are closed or forbidden to enter :) Have fun watching!
Since the earthquake in 2016, many temples have been closed to visitors because they were no longer burglar-proof. There are few official temples left to watch the famous sunrises and sunsets in Bagan. These are then logically overcrowded by tourists and therefore less spectacular for us.
The best temples for sunrises and sunsets in Bagan:
The perfect temple doesn't exist, because it is always weather-dependent, and Bagan can be very dusty, foggy, and devastated. In principle, we found our temples by exploring the area spontaneously and classically. Who would like to have a few recommendations, can find a few location over the app Maps.me, which are however for the most part already no longer current (temples were closed).
Entrance fee Bagan?
The checkpoint to Nyaung U requires 25.000 Kyat (about 15€ or 19$), because you enter an archaeological zone with Bagan, which costs money. You will receive a ticket, which you should always carry with you, as you can be checked during the temple visit.
I have heard from other travellers and backpackers that there is no entrance fee or checkpoint in the direction of Old Bagan and New Bagan. You can also negotiate with taxi drivers who will drive you around the checkpoints for an extra charge.
But I don't take any responsibility for that, because you have to be checked, as I said, and you may have to pay more if you get caught.
Bagan is basically divided into three small cities: Nyaung U, Old Bagan, and New Bagan.
Nyaung U is the closest to the main station and therefore the shortest and cheapest way to hostels and hotels. But renting e-bikes in Nyaung U is more expensive.
Costs e-bike in Bagan: (as of January 2018)
Nyaung U: between 5.000 - 8.000 Kyat per day (3€ - 4,9€ or 3,7$ - 6$)
Old Bagan and New Bagan: between 2,500 and 4,000 Kyat (1.5€ - 2.4€ and 1.8$ -2.9$ respectively)
Our hostel in Bagan cost us 11,000 Kyat (about 6.7€ or 8.2$) and was called Lux Pillow Hostel. The host spoke appropriate English and the hostel itself was clean. There was free coffee and tea all day.
If you have any further questions, please add them to your comments :)

Backpacking Bagan, Myanmar ????????
Bagan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is located at the Mandalay region of Myanmar. It is an ancient city that features about 3,000 Buddhist monuments that include stupas, temples, monuments and the like, which will be shown briefly through this video.
Getting to Bagan from Chiang Mai entailed an almost two hour flight from Chiang Mai to Yangon and then a 10 hour bus ride from Yangon to Bagan. Travelling to Bagan wasn’t the easiest. A lot of times we felt very uneasy and overwhelmed, most especially when we get crowded by tuktuk drivers, but overall, it was one of the most fulfilling travels I have done.
Super grateful to Sheena, my fave travel buddy. Thank you for experiencing all this with me. To Golden Rose Guest House (highly recommended!! Cheaper than most hotels in the area, good location and friendly staff), for being our safe haven. And to the amazing people who we met along the way, Ling, Shein Thu, Nastja, Urban and etc.
Five tips when travelling to Bagan:
1. Keep an open mind and be vigilant, at all times.
2. Get a sim card because Wi-Fi is extremely unreliable in the area.
3. Have your dollars converted prior to heading to Bagan because there are only a few ATMs available in the area and there might be instances when these are offline.
4. Know the area, and how to get around it. There are a lot of shops around Bagan that offer bicycles and e-bikes for rent but we personally hired a rickshaw or trishaw, which I must say, is the best way to see Bagan. Not a lot of people, especially tourists, know that this mode of transportation is available, so big thanks to the family that runs the hotel we stayed in for hiring one for us. Tuktuk tours were available but hiring the rickshaw/trishaw was cheaper, more flexible and unique.
5. Generally, being a Philippine Passport holder allows me to travel to Myanmar without a visa. However, this option is only available when you enter the country via air travel. Visa is needed when you enter the country via land or sea travel.

This holiday, me and my friends, we went to Bagan. Actually, I've been to Bagan many times. You know because it's not quite far from Mandalay where I'm living now. But never got the opportunity to play in Bagan with these of my close pals. Yeah! After a long wait, our wish came true along with my friend's pre wedding photoshoot at there. It's a little bit sad because we all just got one day free from work or school thing. Extremely looking forward to our long holiday.
Vlog - E-Scooters around Bagan, Myanmar
We drove with our friends to Bagan from Mandalay in order to catch the sunrise. This turned out to be one of my favorite experiences from the trip, seeing the thousands of pagodas in the distance for the first time with the early morning light. If you ever have a chance to visit, the e-scooters are a great way to venture further off the beaten path and discover them at your own pace.
