Friendly Beaches and Franks Camp, Freycinet Tasmania

We take a drive down the easy 4wd track from Coles Bay to the far southern end of the Friendly Beaches and Friendly Point. Here we check out Franks Camp, a free campsite within Freycinet National Park, and take a walk on the pure white sands as far as the outflow of Freshwater Lagoon.

AUSTRALIA'S BEST BEACH | Wineglass Bay and Freycinet National Park (Tasmania Day 3)

It’s my last full day backpacking in Tasmania, so I hopped on a bus and went to one of Australia's best beaches: Wineglass Bay, located in stunning Freycinet National Park.

Ibrahim and I got up early in the morning to catch a bus that would take us all the way from Hobart north to the Freycinet National Park. Our plan was to go for a hike to the Wineglass Bay Lookout and then hopefully go for a swim in the crystal clear water.

Our first stop on the ride up was in the rural town of Orford to see Maria Island. The island was originally used as one of the largest prisons in Australia for British convicts during the early 19th century. Now, the island is well-known as an excellent spot for scuba diving and is a national park.

We also stopped to see some padimelons and feed them their breakfast. The adorable animals look like miniature kangaroos and were a small part of our day trip that I found pretty cool. After saying goodbye to the padimelons we got back on the bus, eventually reaching Coles Bay. Located right outside of Freycinet Park, we stopped in Coles Bay to have a quick lunch on the beach and fill our water bottles up before heading into the park.

During the walk in Freycinet, we stopped at the Coles Bay and Wineglass Bay lookouts. Here we got to see some incredibly scenic views that I’m going to remember for a long time. We also came across some wallabies and even had the chance to pet one (we were being pretty stereotypical tourists for the day).

From the Wineglass Bay lookout Ibrahim and I decided that we’d move on to Honeymoon Bay and go for a swim. The sea water was warm and crystal clear, making for a great way to cool off after hiking around all day in the hot sun. After our swim, we explored the park a little bit more before getting back onto the bus and returning to our hostel in Hobart for one last night.

On our way back from Wineglass Bay we took a short detour to look at Friendly Beaches.
Glad we did. beautiful beaches.
The more I watch these videos, the more I learn about how I should be flying to get nicer videos.

The Friendly Beaches form part of Freycinet National Park. Fishing and surfing are two popular pastimes, although people entering the water must be aware that this is an un-patrolled beach and conditions can be dangerous. But it is fun !!

One of Tasmania's few native terrestrial mammals that is on the threatened species list is found in the area. Indeed, the New Holland mouse was first discovered in Tasmania in 1976 in the heathlands of the Friendly Beaches.

Coles Bay is stunning township on the east coast of Tasmania and the main entrance point for visitors to the Freycinet National Park.
The town is on the northern end of Great Oyster Bay with breathtaking views of the red and pink granite peaks known as The Hazards, on the Freycinet Peninsula.

If your looking for somewhere to get away from everything and camp next to white silica sandy beaches and some of the most pristine water, then Friendly Beaches within the Freycinet National Park (Tasmania) is well worth winding the days away. The campground is in the northern section at Issacs Point and has toilet blocks. You will need to BYO drinking water, food and other needs. Coles Bay is only a 15 min drive into town if you need anything. The southern section of Friendly Beaches can easily be accessed as it has recently been graded and is 100% accessible by 2wd cars. There is no camping available in the southern end.
