Woman Saves Koala From Fire in New South Wales, Australia
A badly-burnt koala was rescued by a brave passerby as it crawled through a wildfire in Australia on Tuesday.
The koala named Lewis is facing a long recovery.
Lewis' rescuer Toni Doherty gave him water and wrapped him in a blanket after finding the injured koala on the Oxley Highway west of the New South Wales state town of Wauchope.
The 14-year-old koala was taken to nearby Koala Hospital Port Macquarie for treatment for severe burns to his feet, chest and stomach, according to local media.
His injuries are so severe that he may not be allowed back in the wild.
Doherty said it was her natural instinct that led her to rescue the animal from the burning trees.
So, just immediately thought just get to him, put the fire out, Doherty told Network Nine.
Lewis the koala has a 50/50 chance of survival and is now in home care.
Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is treating over 30 koalas affected by the fires.
Hundreds of koalas are believed to have died in wildfires gripping the New South Wales state over the past two weeks.
Meanwhile, several wildfires are also burning out of control in the South Australia state with catastrophic weather conditions prompting fire officials to issue emergency warnings.

Koala begs cyclists for water in Australia heat as bushfires kill 30 per cent of the species
HEARTBREAKING footage shows a desperate koala begging cyclists for water as up to a THIRD of its species have been wiped out in Australia's apocalyptic bushfires.
The animal was nearly run over by the team of cyclists who came to its aid as it sat on the road to Adelaide in baking 40C heat.
The 'very thirsty boy' approached the cyclists and was filmed lapping up as much water as it could, having climbed up onto the bikes to get to the bottles.
The marsupials are being forced out of their homes by the fires, leading to similar scenes across affected areas.
The country's Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley estimates the infernos have destroyed 30 per cent of the little marsupials habitat.
It is thought the flames and destruction may have killed thousands of Koalas whose numbers are already dangerously low.

Koala rescue - Team deployed to save animals from horrors of Australia bushfires
A disaster response team has been deployed to Kangaroo Island in South Australia to begin a search and rescue mission for thousands of koalas and other animals caught in bushfires.
The team formed by the animal charity Humane Society International are there to rescue wildlife suffering from burns, injuries, smoke inhalation and other trauma.
They will also build water and food stations to sustain the uninjured animals who managed to survive.
But according to Humane Society International senior specialist in disaster response, Kelly Donithan, conditions on the ground are extremely harrowing:
These are some of the toughest scenes I've ever witnessed as an animal rescuer. The bodies of charred animals as far as the eye can see,
However, as we set out each day on search and rescue, we're still finding animals alive, injured, dazed or traumatized, and it's such a relief to be able to give them immediate life-saving assistance.
We've seen kangaroos with devastating burn injuries and dehydrated koalas gasping for water. Amidst all this death, every time we find an animal alive it feels like a miracle.
Koalas may now be designated an endangered species as so many have been killed.

At least 350 koalas are feared killed as bush fires continue to burn in the eastern part of Australia. As of November 19, 2019, the fires had also taken at least four human lives, and torched about 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) of farmland and bush in New South Wales and Queensland. More than 300 homes have been destroyed by the fires, which are also blamed for heavy smog in nearby cities including Sydney.

Australia’s efforts to bring koalas back from the brink of extinction
The population of Australia's iconic koala has been rapidly declining in recent decades, and this year the Australian Koala Foundation declared the marsupials functionally extinct. But one Queensland zoo is using proven breeding strategies to protect the animals, and starting a live genome bank to tackle some of the biggest threats to koalas. Special correspondent Kirsty Johansen reports.

Koala rescuer is reunited with her scorched friend
Toni Doherty, the woman who rescued a badly burnt and wailing koala from an Australian bushfire was reunited with the koala now known as Lewis on Wednesday (November 20) at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
Doherty told local broadcaster Network Nine that it was 'just natural instinct' for her to rush to Lewis' aid, wrapping the animal in her shirt and a blanket and pouring water over it.
At the hospital, Clinical director Cheyne Flanagan said he was badly burnt but was on fluids, oxygen, eating and enjoying the five-star service.
The koala populations around Port Macquarie have been a major victim of the flames, with more than 350 of the marsupials feared killed in a major habitat.
