Iceland South Coast. Landscape Photography
March 2018 - Part 1 of 2 short videos from my Landscape Photography trip to Iceland. we drove along Route 1 on Icelands South Coast visiting some of the iconic locations. The weather was terrible, high winds and pouring with rain for 3 days. We got a one hour window when the rain stopped so we rushed about like mad trying to photograph Vestrahorn Mountains at Stokksness beach. Not the weather we had hoped for but I was still delighted with the photos I returned with!! A worthwile trip.
Part 2 will be uploaded soon - Skogafoss Waterfall & The Aurora dancing over Rekjavik!
Rarity in a World of Plenty - Iceland Luxury
Iceland is a vast volcanic laboratory where mighty forces shape the earth: geysers gush, mudpots gloop, ice-covered volcanoes rumble and glaciers grind great pathways through the mountains. Its supercharged splendour seems designed to remind visitors of their utter insignificance in the greater scheme of things.
Vík: Iceland’s Southernmost Village
Hello from Iceland! I’ll be sharing videos from here for the next couple of weeks as I explore and take notes for the second edition of our new guidebook, Rick Steves Iceland: There’s a lot to discover on this little island, and I look forward to packing you along. (Do you have traveling friends who are also dreaming of Iceland? Be sure to invite them to join us here.)
We begin in the tiny town of Vík, Iceland’s southernmost village. While most travelers’ Icelandic memories are a charm bracelet of jaw-droppingly beautiful natural sights, I enjoy visiting the workaday towns along the way — and showing them to travelers. These towns aren’t pretty, as it's rare to find buildings here from before WWII. Most Icelandic homes are built more to resist the weather than to delight the eye. Still, on this ice-covered rock between Norway and Greenland (just a bit bigger than Maine, with 340,000 people), towns like Vík are real — and good travel is real, too.
Join me on a quick tour of Vík with Stefan Valsson of Reykjavík Bike Tours. (By the way, guides like Stefan are easy to book anywhere in the world via Tours By Locals. I’ve used them in both hemispheres to book guides when I don’t have a particular person already in mind.)
Discovering Iceland - A Travel Deep inside of a dream
Traveling is without a doubt the possibility of daydreaming; the constant search of being filled with new experiences, emotions and memories.
After having visited Iceland this year, and experiencing a unique adventure, this concept was what fueled this video.

runICELAND 2018 I 5 days running across Iceland --- Island I Golden Circle I September 2018
RunICELAND is a five-day stage race and trailrunning adventure taking place on the island of fire and ice - Iceland!
The race runs along the southern coastal and highland part of the icelandic ring road and consists of five very different stages from 17 to 42 km length in magnificent landscapes, including multiple after-run activities like visiting famous waterfalls, glacier lagoons and black sand beaches.
RunICELAND is not tough because of its length or elevation gains, but due to the ever-changing icelandic weather going from hot and sunny to ice-cold and rainy with superhigh winds. It's a challenge even for fit and experienced runners as there are no aid stations and the whole race is self-sufficient (apart from one station at the marathon day).
Iceland and the race locations are one of a kind and full of diversity and stunning beauty and there are so many places worth a visit along the route that we can highly recommend anybody to go and see by themself - but now HAVE FUN WATCHING! :-)

Vestrahorn mountain - East Iceland
Separating the South of Iceland from the Eastfjords, Vestrahorn rises defiantly out of the black sand beach of Stokksnes. It is one of few gabbro mountains in Iceland and is an iconic sight, even compared to the multitude of glaciers, volcanoes and otherworldly beaches that adorn the Icelandic coastline.
Vestrahorn means West Horn, a self-explanatory word for English speakers, but the mountains may have reminded the viking settlers of horns. On the far end you can see the three-peaked Brunnhorn mountain, which some modern travellers call the Batman mountain, because it resembles the Batman sign.
The mountain has been featured in numerous films and TV series, such as Stardust, featuring Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer, and the Bollywood romance Dilwale.

The Ocean Cliffs near Vik - South Coast of Iceland - July 6, 2012
On our vacation/filming/adventure trip around Iceland, we were traveling the south coast near the town of Vik & discovered some amazing cliffs over the ocean, looking both ways down the coast. The beach shown in both directions here was rated as one of the 10 most beautiful in the world, by Islands Magazine.
Photos around Vik:
Village of Vik:
Potential Danger living in Vik:
Vík lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918, and this longer than typical repose period has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon. An eruption of Katla could melt enough glacier ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town. The town's church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood. Thus, the people of Vík practice periodic drills and are trained to rush to the church at the first sign of an eruption
I can tell you that Iceland is one of the most beautiful, magical & enchanting countries I have ever seen with it's 24 hour daylight in the summer, volcanos, geysers, steam vents, hot springs, pools and streams, bubbling sulphur mud pools, glaciers, forests, fjords, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, rugged coasts, cliffs, beaches, mountains, valleys, green meadows, plains & deserts. It is a combination of England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada & the USA all rolled into one place. The people speak Icelandic which is actually an old Norwegian dialect, but almost all also speak English, which makes this a very easy & friendly country to navigate in. It is also rated as the safest country in the world. If a visit to this unique country is not on your bucket list, it should be ... there are so many things to discover here every day of your trip!

5 Day Iceland Itinerary (South Coast)
Full blog post with tips:
Day 1 | Reykjavik | Hotel:
-Fly into Reykjavik. If you can, catch a red eye & book a window seat because if you’re lucky like me, you’ll get a front row seat to the Northern Lights on your way in from the plane.
-Blue Lagoon. We visited the Blue Lagoon just look around and take photos, we didn’t go in. It’s really expensive and my mom and I would rather be out flying our drones then go in a giant hot tub lol.
-We checked into our hotel in the afternoon and had a nap. We were pretty exhausted from dealing with all the airlines.
-We went to WOW air HQ to try and talk with somebody. After no success and some pretty rude employees, we went out downtown Reykjavik to explore then met some friends who’s overlapped ours by a day for food & drinks.
-Went searching for Northern Lights but had no success due to clouds.
Day 2 | Gulfoss, Seljalandsfoss & Vik | Hotel:
-Before we left the city we stocked up on groceries at at Bonus
-Drove to Gulfoss. We made a TONNE of stops along the way. The landscape when you leave the city is overwhelming
- Strokkur Geysir to see the explosion of water in the hot springs.
- After this, we headed to Vik and stopped at Seljalandsfoss waterfall on the way into town
- Our hotel just outside of Vik in Sólheimahjáleiga. We stayed at a cute guesthouse that had lots of farm animals. There was also a kitchen in the common area.
Day 3 | Skogafoss Waterfall, Plane Crash, Black Sand Beach & Glacier | Hotel:
- As mentioned above, this was my favourite day!!! It was action packed with a variety of scenery.
-Skogafoss Waterfall. Make sure you hike up to the top and walk along the trail for a bit. The view of the mountain range from top is unreal.
- Hike to Sólheimasandur Plane Crash. This was longer then I expected. Go prepared and bring rainproof gear with you. You’re walking on what feels like Mars and the wind can get very cold!
- Black Sand Beach - cute cafe here too to warm up with a coffee/hot chocolate after
- I saw there were ATV tours in Vik which my mom and I would have loved to do, but there was no time! After black sand beach we had to start heading to Hofn which was a couple hour drive. We always tried to be at our hotel before dark because there’s no lights on the roads and it can get sketchy at times.
- We Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon JUST as the sun set!
Day 4 | Wild horses & Vestrahorn | Hotel:
- Though I felt Hofn to be underwhelming compared to Vik in terms of activities, the hotel here was DREAMY though.. It was modern, big & the views were off the hook.
- This day we used to sleep in and I caught up on work before we went out and explored that day. We were pooped from going non-stop up until here.
- We drove around and stumbled on Wild Horses
- Visited Vestrahorn, which is those jagged mountains you see when captioned “Hofn” in the video
Day 5 | Wild horses & Vestrahorn | Hotel:
- Day 5 we had a lot of driving to do (roughly 6 hours), so we were up early and on the road to head back to the city for our flight.
- Managed to squeeze in Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. It was pouring by the time we got to the Canyon, still beautiful nonetheless! To all my fellow Bieber fans out there (lol), this is one of the spots he filmed his music video “I’ll Show You.”.
