The frost covered trees of Zao — An extraordinary sight that never fails to touch hearts
Many of those who visit Yamagata during winter come here for the acclaimed beauty of Zao’s scenery. It takes only 40 minutes by car to reach Zao from Yamagata City. Did you know that apart from juhyo, Zao is also home to unique sightseeing spots such as the historic Zao Onsen Town and Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort. This time, we chose to stay overnight at the Zao Astraea Hotel, the only accommodation in the region with rooms that overlook Zao Onsen Town’s splendid night view. Within the hotel is a rotenburo (露天風呂, open-air hot spring), which enhances your experience of Zao’s charms.
● Ice-coated trees illuminated at Mount. Zao
Trees thickly covered with ice and frost are being illuminated in northern Japan.
Every year, the illuminated ice coating attracts many visitors to Mt. Zao in Yamagata Prefecture.
Lights went on at 5 PM on Saturday at a ropeway station near the peak at about 1,600 meters above sea level to show about 5-meter-high ice-coated trees.
This year is the 25th anniversary of the start of the illumination. Visitors enjoyed the pageantry, braving heavy snow and strong wind.
A man from Taiwan said it was his first time to view the trees and he called them magnificent.
Another man from Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, said, now that he's seen the actual ice-coated trees, he can easily understood why they get called ice monster. But he regrets that bad weather blocked his clear view of them.
The illumination will continue through March 2nd of next year.
Zao Snow Monsters - Yamagata - 蔵王の樹氷 - 4K Ultra HD
Famous for its onsen, its beautiful mountain and as a world-class ski resort, Mt. Zao is also extremely popular among foreign tourists for its magnificent Snow Monsters also called Juhyo in Japanese.
Far from being dangerous, these Juhyo are in fact just frost covered evergreens created by a unique weather pattern combining heavy snow and chilly, often powerful Siberian winds. Indeed it is not rare to have on top of Mt Zao temperatures as low as -25c and winds blowing as much as 95km/h!!!
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we had a hard time filming Mt. Zao’s famous Juhyo due to an overall shortage of precipitation in Japan this winter. However, rest assured that next year we will make sure to be on the lookout for more terrifying Juhyo!

Zao Onsen, located in Yamagata city in the northeastern region of Tohoku, is one of Japan’s most renowned mountain tourist destinations. Standing about 800 meters above sea level and among splendid mountains, this traditional hot spring village surrounded by nature boasts many hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. Zao Onsen has a long history and is said to have been discovered in the year AD 110.
In winter, those surrounding mountains turn into slopes for the top-class Zao Onsen Ski Resort, renowned in Japan for its large scale. Feel exactly like in the Arctic!!! We must literally seize the moment at the very first night in Mt. Zao as the night illumination of these Juhyu, ice monsters is seen only on weekends in January. The spectacularly unique scenic view of the frosted trees that’s equally amazing both on the day and at night are interactive formation of taken sea moisture and seasonal winter winds rolling around Tohoku region from Siberia, Russia. After the freezing winds pass the Sea of Japan crossing the Asahi Mountain Rang that lies to the west of Mt. Zao, the created moisture in the air forms the cold droplets covering conifers on the slopes of Mt. Zao. The roundtrip fare costs 2800 Japanese yen per person despite the four days lift ticket purchased and ice flakes blown by strong wind are surly turning into tiny rocks brutally hitting my face. 樹氷は標高が高く、雪風が激しい場所にしか発生しないため
常に強風雪が発生しているため晴れ間や風が弱くなる事は珍しい為
ドローンの撮影出来るタイミングがほんの僅かしかありません。
今回の登山中は吹雪大荒れでしたが一瞬の晴れ間をついて撮影。
後半の松川は遠刈田温泉の横を流れる河川。
川に温泉成分が流れ込んでおり川底に沈殿した黄白色に
水の青が加わって美しい緑青色となります。
ぜひ蔵王で樹氷＆スキーを楽しんだ帰りには遠刈田温泉へ来てけさい！
・樹氷について
”シベリアからの北西の季節風は、日本海の対馬暖流（夏は25℃くらい、冬でも10℃前後）から多くの水蒸気をもらい雪雲をつくります。その雪雲は朝日連峰で上昇して多量の雪を降らせ、山形盆地を通り、再び蔵王連峰で上昇して雪を降らせます。そのときの雲の中は、多くの雲粒が0℃以下でも凍らない過冷却水滴になり、雪と交じり合った状態になります。蔵王の1～2月頃は快晴の日が少なく、風向は北西から西を示し、平均風速10～15 m/s、平均温度-10～-12℃の吹雪の世界となります。
蔵王の樹氷はこうした気象条件で成長します。”

During the climbing this time, it was a heavy snowstorm, but I took a picture of a sunny day.
Matsukawa in the latter half is a river that flows beside Togarita Onsen.
The hot spring ingredients are flowing into the river, and the yellowish white color settled at the bottom of the river
Water blue is added to make a beautiful bronze color.
Please come to Togarita Onsen on your way home after enjoying rime and skiing in Zao!

“The northwest seasonal wind from Siberia receives a lot of water vapor from the Tsushima warm current (around 25 ° C in summer and around 10 ° C even in winter) in the Sea of Japan. The mountain passes through the Yamagata basin and rises again at the Zao mountain range, and snow falls. I do have mixed feelings about my second ski trip in the Mt. Zao, Yamagata, Japan this season. Generally speaking the north eastern area famous for its ice monsters/ frosted conifers and onsen/ hot spring doesn’t have powder snow and much sunshine perfectly for skiing/ snowboarding activity. No doubt its unique elevated terrain located at the very ideal longitude and latitude enables sea moistures taken by winds from Siberia, Russia to stay and form thick layers covering up all mountain trees without damaging or tearing them down. But probably the humidity is also the reason the snow flakes here look and feel relatively giant and so different from those powdery ones in other ski resorts of Hokkaido, Japan. I can literally see the tiny ice rocks that can manage to find a way to slap my face even with googles and a mask cover my ski outfits while taking the lifts up to the hills. There aren’t many ski in and ski out hotels in this area and it takes forever to walk through the onsen street and reach the uphill no.4 gondola especially in the wintery mornings. The ski slopes design is awkwardly difficult for boarders and skier to smoothly complete good runs due to the flatness of many slopes. I basically must walk quite far to reach some other sections to continue to ski under the extreme foggy low visibility. Thus feel I am more like a cross country skier than a regular recreational one. Japan has one of the best winter seasons. Not only it is bright and sunny even on winter season, Japan also prides itself having the best snow for winter sports.
This trip features two amazing prefectures in Tohoku Region - Yamagata and Miyagi.
Mt. Zao is not only known for its powder snow but also for the Snow Monsters (trees covered with snow ) and onsen (hot spring) town.
We did a side trip to the Fox Village too in Miyagi Prefecture.
