Let's travel to a valley in the Japanese alps in Nagano to get some organically grown wasabi from the farm! Just how is wasabi grown?
Daio Wasabi Farm is one of Japan's largest and is a great place to find out – and try wasabi cuisine!
There are few produce directly associated with Japan.
Wasabi is one of the most widely known and the flavor is found more and more in snacks because of it's spicy kick.
It's also used in sushi, mixed in the soy sauce.
There is a big different between the processed wasabi found in some restaurants and the fresh kind which is traditionally ground on a shark skin grater and collected. The color and smell. The texture and taste.
Why does fresh wasabi cost so much?
It takes between 12 to 18 month to grow one and there is no telling what size it will be when pulled from the ground.
The wasabi needs to be in the shade and have constant fresh water. The minerals from the melted snows of the Japanese alps surrounding Daio Wasabi Farm are perfect to make the worlds most delicious wasabi.
What else can you do at the wasabi farm?
You can hike around the beautiful area and also grab a bite to eat in the food plaza. They have:

How Japan Became High Tech w/ Silk Worms
The most modern and advanced country in the world? Well, Japan is certainly at the top, but it wasn't always that way. Before the Meiji Restoration (1868) Japan was closed to the outside world. Before 1868, it was the time of the samurai and feudal society.
After 1868, Japan started to compete internationally for the first time during the industrial revolution.
At the time, the most sought after good with the MADE IN JAPAN label was ...
SILK.
The TOMIOKA SILK MILL and the JOBU SILK ROAD in Gunma Prefecture is the area where Japan's industrial revolution took place and between 1872 and 1987, the silk mill turned out the highest quality of silk in the world.
Today, the silk mill is on the UNESCO World Heritage site and a reminder of where Japan started it's tech revolution. It's worth a visit to see where modern Japan came from, buy some chocolate silk worms and see the remnants of an era past.

Working closely with France, Japan brought in the highest technology for making raw silk to increase production for world demand - to raise foreign capital. It worked, and as Japan succeeded with silk, it continued to modernize and upgrade.
The model of bringing tech from foreign partners, improving on it and selling the global market better products at a better price can be seen in the automobile industry, the TV industry, robotics, image sensors.
The area also includes Shimonita which many call RETRO TOWN because it's lost in time, a place where nothing was renewed and lived on in its original state for decades dating back to the Showa Era.
Hungry? The Shinokita Katsudon 下仁田かつ丼 is the dish to try.
The konnyaku is also very famous in this area.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents its second act of the JF Garage Concert, J-Electronic feat. Vietnamese Jew's harp & zither by Tri Minh (DJ), Sebastien Gesell (DJ), Duc Minh (Jew's harps) and Tra My (Vietnamese zither) in Hanoi on Friday 19 October 2012.
In this premier concert, modernity meets Vietnamese tradition. Tri Minh, one of the best electronic music solo artists in Vietnam, will collaborate with two Vietnamese traditional musicians, Duc Minh on Jew's harps (Dan moi) and Tra My on Vietnamese zither (Dan tranh).
Duc Minh, a member of international society of Jew's harp, is an enthusiastic composer/researcher on Jew's harps in Vietnam. Studying Jew's harps (or Dan moi in Vietnamese) under the highly revered musician/ethnomusicologist, Mr. Tran Quang Hai, Duc Minh became one of the pioneers to bring minority music to Vietnamese and international audience. This is his first-ever act to play with electronic music.
Tra My, a lecturer of Vietnam National Academy of Music and a member of Vietnam Traditional Orchestra, is the master of Vietnamese zither (or Dan tranh in Vietnamese). Earning a plethora of medals in contests and festivals, Tra My has been actively participating in various international orchestras and troupes by honorable invitations.
The catalyst to connect these traditional music masters into electronic music is a multi-talented musician, Tri Minh. Equipped with the degree of musical composition at Hanoi Conservatory of Music, Tri Minh started his career as a Jazz musician but explored his territory in experimental and electronic music, and consequently became one of the most acclaimed electronic musicians in Vietnam. His flexibility and open-minded approach for creation attracts a lot of international and domestic musicians in various genres to collaborate with him, and collaborators enjoy all the time the sublimated fruits with him and the audience.
The concert will be kicked off with the sounds of Jew's harp, introducing a minority song as well as a Duc Minh's original song, followed by fusion of Jew's harp and electronic music. Then the program focuses on Tra My's excellent Vietnamese zither, starting with the Japanese famous song, Sakura [Cherry Blossoms], followed by the collaboration with Tri Minh, and goes to the climax of the concert, fusion of the all three musicians.
Another climax we cannot miss is a DJ live by Sebastien Gesell, a bilingual of French and Japanese. After being warmed up by stimulating music collaboration, you will be treated with the best of Japanese electronic tunes shuffled by Sebastien in the latter half of the concert.
We do hope our JF Garage Concert 02 will be a good showcase of another challenging fusion of modernity and tradition, as well as a good introduction of diversity in Japanese electronic music.
Free of admission. The concert starts at 8pm on Friday 19 October in the courtyard (Open Stage) of the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi). All free seats, first-come, first-served.

Story:
