2 0 1 8 | DONGDAMEN night market Hualien | T r a v e l vlog

Relatives of Siaolin Village victims stage protest after appeals for state compensation denied
Relatives of those killed in Kaohsiung’s Siaolin Village in 2009, when Typhoon Morakot triggered a mudslide burying the town, traveled to Taipei today to protest the rejection of their compensation claims. Family members of some of the hundreds that died pointed to a similar yet successful claims case in Japan’s 2011 Tohoku Earthquake as a reason why the Supreme Court should order a retrial of their own case. After losing multiple appeals for state compensation, family members of victims in the Siaolin Village disaster traveled to Taipei to stage a protest at the Supreme Court.Victim’s Family Member I’m really sad, because I’m not able to see my family during the new year and other holidays. We just want the truth to come out and give us back a hold on reality. The Taiwan High Court ruled against compensation, citing in its decision the impossibility of predicting natural disasters, together with the fact that the town’s emergency shelter was also swallowed up by the mudslide. But the family members of the victims maintain that local administrators are guilty of dereliction of duty.Tsai Song-yu Siaolin Village Reconstruction Committee The Jiasian District Office ignored 8 different red and yellow-level warnings from the Kaohsiung County disaster response center, and never carried out any evacuation measures. Relatives of the victims in Siaolin pointed to a similar case filed in the wake of Japan’s 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, in which the family of a young victim won state compensation even though the local disaster shelter was submerged at the time. The Siaolin relatives called on the Supreme Court to remand their case to the High Court for a retrial.
Clémence Royer (France) Studying at National Cheng Kung University
Living in Taiwan has been one of my favorite parts of my life. I have started with an exchange bachelor at the Aeronautic and Aerospace Department of NCKU, then pursued with a master of science in Electric propulsion. I worked in research on a space thruster.
Beside my study, I have visited every place in Formosa, experienced 3 or 4 typhoons and many earthquakes. I have met new friends; have been 2 times at hospital for a soup burn and a car accident, passed my driver license which I have never passed before in France.
I bought a scooter, moved up 4 times in different house/flat, had 7 different roommates and chased hundred times garbage truck. I have worked in 2 different French restaurants to earn money. I have seen more than 10 scooter accidents; I went in more than 5 different waterfalls, 2 hot springs, 3 little Taiwanese islands.
I have met wild turtles and have seen my friend being stolen his burger from a wild monkey. I have taken days off in 6 different countries out of Taiwan like Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Vietnam, India and Japan. I have been sick 2 times on the boat to Green Island. I have camped in Hualian valley, sent a sky lantern in Pingxi and visited thousand temples.
I have sightseen on Maokong, slept in Jiufen Old Street, climbed over mountains, drank tea in Maolin and partied in Kaohsiung. I have swum in Pacific Ocean in Taitung, drank coffee in Alishan forest and finished 3 big tiger balms used against mosquito scrubs.
I had fun in Kenting, Keeloon, Taitchung, Taipei, Tainan night markets, made 1 small permanent 茶 tattoo on my neck. I have shared BBQ in Xiao Liuqiu, driven scooter under typhoon violent rain in Penghu and I made 2 Youtube videos of my first 6 months journey in Taiwan.
But moreover, I have been mesmerized every day for the last 400 days I have spent in Taiwan. There are so many other experiences I lived and I thank all of people I met to have made me enjoying Taiwan like I did.

Typhoon Dujuan strengthens into super typhoon
Typhoon Dujuan had strengthened into a super typhoon on Sunday.
Affected by Typhoon Dujuan, the wind became stronger along the coast of Wenling City, east China’s Zhejiang Province.
According to the forecast of the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Observatory, Typhoon Dujuan would land in north and central parts of Fujian on Sept 29.
Only part of Fujian may have shower or rainstorm on the Mid-Autumn Festival. Most people would still be able to see the full moon.
Before midnight, people can see the full moon in most parts of Fuling. However, the wind along the coast of north and central areas would be strengthening, said Li Yafen, chief meteorologist of the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Observatory.
Typhoon Dujuan was to land in northeast Taiwan on Sept 28. Then it would landed in north and central Fujian before noon on Sept 29. Most parts of Fujian would have rain, ranging from moderate rain to extraordinary rainstorm. However, it will have little effects on the transportation of the National Day Holiday.
After it landed in Fujian, Typhoon Dujuan would weaken and move westward to Jiangxi Province. Therefore, the rainfall would be decreasing and the wind would also weaken, said Li Yafen. More on:
