JAPAN FROM INSIDE - LE JAPON A DOUBLE TOUR - 2000 - 60 minutes
Full Version of THE ONLY INDEPENDENT FILM EVER SHOT INSIDE A JAPANESE PRISON.
Each prison's system is the implacable reflection of the society that produces it. France, country that wrote the human right's principles, is deploring its prisons. But how a « successful » prison would look like? What type of society would it be the symptom? Today jail seems to be the most, if not the only, morally acceptable social punishment for the developed countries. And it is maybe in Japan that we might find the most elaborate and « successful » carceral system. Very harsh in it application, and almost never investigated by foreign observers, how does it justify it self to the Japanese citizen, and to the rest of the world? How could other culture and societies accept it? The Fuchu prison is detaining around 500 foreign inmates. How do they cope to the extremely strict rules of the prison? Two French citizens, one still inside jail, the other already released, are telling their experiment and their feeling about this system.

What Japanese Prison Food is Like ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan has some amazing prison food, which should be no surprise. Inmates are served healthy, nutritious meals of grilled fish, salads, rice and soup - which are actually healthier than most school lunches around the world! Would you like to try what prisoners eat? There's a prison in Hokkaido that serves authentic meals to the public and that is where I went -- Abashiri.
Abashiri is in the very north of Hokkaido and is famous for its prison. Their Bangaichi Shokudo Diner is the only restaurant that serves authentic prison food in Japan, the ingredients the same as the penitentiary nearby. The meals will probably surprise you!
Prison Food Menu:
SET A: Pacific Saury, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (780 yen / $7.00)
SET B: Atka Mackerel, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (820 yen / $7.50)
It's called the secret meal because Japanese Prisons are very restrictive with access to the outside world. However, Abashiri is dfferent and they've opened up prison life to the public and it's worth a visit.
We also get a tour of today's prison cells in Japan. They have tatami mats, futons, TV, toilet and window. There are private cells and cells for 6 or more inmates. Japanese inmates typically eat their meals in their cells.
The Japanese prison life is regimented, the schedule the same everyday. Wake up at 6:40am and lights out at 9:00pm.
Meal time is three times a day for 20 minutes.
Where is Abashiri, Japan?
It's in Hokkaido's north, a 90 plane ride from Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

府中駅南口 再開発前の商店街(2012年1月1日)Shopping district in front of Fuchu Station before redevelopment

Shopping district in front of Fuchu Station before major redevelopment.
It is a scenery of a typical downtown area in the suburban town of Japan's big city. However, this scenery can not be seen by redevelopment now.
The movie shooting date is January 1, 2012.

Pete Bethune: My Time In a Japanese Prison
In Global Animal's podcast interview with conservationist and anti-whaling activist Pete Bethune, he describes his three months in a Japanese prison and the regimen that kept him sane. Bethune discusses being treated like Hannibal Lector, brought in chained and shackled by 100 security guards, and how his reputation as a crazy Sea Shepherd 'eco-terrorist' may have actually saved his Kiwi butt.

Is Japan's Criminal Justice System Very Efficient or Deeply Flawed?
Harsh Justice (2004): A close look at the criminal justice system in Japan
For downloads and more information visit
Recent reports from some of Japan's top prisons are painting a disturbing picture of this country's 'third world' approach to justice.
A staggering 99.9% of those charged with committing a crime are convicted. Court cases are simply ceremonies to impose punishment rather than determine guilt, explains top defence lawyer Yuichi Kaido. The police are proud of the figure which reflects their slick crime busting techniques. They use violence or threats to extract confessions from detainees and then pass them over for trial without jury. Few walk away from court free. In only one of my cases has the defendant been completely acquitted, says Yuichi. His career has spanned twenty years. For those sentenced, the ordeal is just beginning. Tales of torture and abuse are beginning to filter out from Japan's most notorious prisons. One ex-prisoner recalls being bound with leather handcuffs, thrown into a protection chamber and beaten by the guards. It's like a dictatorship, I witnessed daily violence and acts of injustice, says Kazutomi Honda. Inmates on death row suffer extreme psychological trauma as they await execution. No dates are set and prisoners can languish for years living in suspense. Falsely accused, wrongly convicted; many of Japan's prisoners can testify to their country's rough justice.

Why Japan's conviction rate is 99% | The Economist
In Japan, crime rates are low and the state incarcerates far fewer people than in other rich countries. But when people are accused of a crime they are almost always convicted.
