Shirahige Waterfall しらひげの滝 a waterfall at about 600 m above sea level in Shirogane Onsen, Biei town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and was named after splashes of the falls like the white mustache. The Shirahige Falls is located on the upper stream of Blue Pond (青い池). After water containing aluminum flows into Biei River from the falls and ground water in the Shirogane Onsen, and is mixed with hot springs containing sulfur or Iou River (硫黄川) containing the sulfur, colloidal that diffuses the sunlight are created in the river, and down the river from the confluence of the Iou River and the Biei River looks blue, so it is called Blue River. Its water is clear and colorless, and is harmless to human bodies. By the way, Shirogane Dam (白金ダム), Shirogane Fudo Falls (白金不動の滝), Road Station Biei Biruke (道の駅びえい「白金ビルケ」), Bogakudai (望岳台) and the Blue Pond are relatively near here.
Fudo no Taki 白金不動の滝 This three-stage waterfall was a sacred spot for Shugendo Buddhist monks who strove for asceticism during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Stepping foot in the clear waters, freezing cold even in summer, is a real eye-opener! It drives home the harsh discipline of the monks praying under the waterfall.

Shirahige Falls is a spectacular waterfall situated 600 meters above sea level in the town of Biei, southeast of Asahikawa. White curtains of water cascading through gaps in the cliff give this natural landmark its name, which means “white beard waterfall.” Shirahige Falls is unusual for a Japanese waterfall in that it flows from an underground river. The waterfall is particularly stunning in the winter when frost-encrusted trees and shimmering icicles showcase the blue ravine below.
Seasonal light-up events make the aura even more magical. Although the illumination period usually lasts from November to April, exact dates may vary by year. When visiting, be sure to wear warm clothes appropriate for subzero temperatures.
After seeing the waterfall, head to nearby Biei Shirogane Onsen. This all-natural hot spring, open since 1950, is rich in minerals like magnesium and calcium sulfate. The open-air bath lets you bathe among the snowy winter landscape.
