Drunken Horse Festival 2019 Kumamoto Japan (FUJISAKI HACHIMANGU FESTIVAL)
The parade takes place in the covered Kamitori and Shimotori arcades downtown and basically involves each group chanting, banging taiko drums and chasing their horse down the thoroughfare. Though the horses are now very well controlled, in years past they actually gave local sake or shochu to the animals, causing quite a stir and – in my opinion – endangering the welfare of the animals. There’s more than enough excitement going on during the parade without the addition of alcohol.

When you think of horses in relation to Kumamoto, the first thing that springs to mind is Basashi – horse meat served raw like its fishy equivalent sashimi.
But horses are famous in Kumamoto for more than one reason, and the Kumamoto Horse Festival (known locally as the Great Festival of the Fujisaki Hachimangu Shrine) is a popular event with locals and tourists alike.
Dokai! Dokai! Boshita Festival in Kumamoto! Sa sa sa saisa!
There's a lot of possibilities why the matsuri was once called boshita. One of the big reasons why that I hear a lot here in Kumamoto is that it was a festival to celebrate the fact that Japan won the war against Korea. Some people tell me that at the end of the festival they used to cut the horses heads off (and eat them later, of course). I am not sure whether or not that is true...
The Zuibyo, or parade of following samurai, certainly originated from the returning samurai of Kato Kiyomasa from Korea during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598). Kato Kiyomasa thanked the Kami of the Fujisaki-hachimangu for the safe return by leading the parade of his followers. This custom continued into the Hosokawa clan period, with three important samurai figures: head of followers, head of spears, parade head.
Now-a-days the festival is called Uma O-matsuri and children are taught not to call it Boshita--but a lot of adults and older folk still do. During the festival they used to yell Boshita! Boshita! but now they yell Dokai! Dokai! though this year I did hear one group yell Boshita! The older generation still says they sometimes miss Boshita!
A while back they also used to get the horses drunk before they paraded them around, and would continue to give them alcohol. Today it's illegal, though I'm sure some people still slip the horses alcohol. Now the only thing they can do is parade and dance around the animal--the more resistance from the horse (bucking, etc) the better. It's what they aim for. Because of that, sometimes people get injured.
The people involved drink and are up at the crack of dawn preparing and gathering before the festival. They usually go out the night before and get drunk and stay up all night. The next day they drink alcohol and dance through town. What once started as a festival with only 9 groups involved has blossomed into a festival with 68 groups involved. Next year it seems as though I will be participating. :)

The bonus footage is a rope circle in front of the main shrine at the Kumamoto Castle Inari Shrine. You have to walk through the ring counter-clockwise, clockwise, counter-clockwise, then straight through.

Taking place over several days, there is much preparation needed before the main event. Running up until the big day, groups practice taking the horses out on the street, and the ceremonial drums and bells can be heard at all hours of the day.
During the actual festival, different groups parade between the Fujisaki Hachimangu Shrine and Gokoku Shrine (near Kumamoto Castle.) The parade passes through the main part of the city, and there are thousands of spectators. The horses are decorated and dancers in extravagant uniforms play a big part, as do the musicians. Large drums and other instruments play incessantly in a samba-band style. What with the noise, the colours and the excitement in the air, participants and the crowd are both worked up into a fervour, not to mention to horses, which buck and pull at the ropes which hold them down. Each team has several strong men in charge of holding the horse and guiding it safely along the chaotic, crowded streets.

大祭の諸行事は9月の第3月曜日（敬老の日）をその最終日とする5日間にわたって行われており、その最終日に行われる神幸行列が祭りのクライマックスとなる
その中で観客の注目を集めるのは、神輿に付き従う「随兵」と「飾り馬」の奉納行列である
「随兵」は、加藤清正が文禄・慶長、大坂から無事帰還できたことを神前に感謝し、みずから随兵頭となって兵を引き連れて藤崎宮の神幸式に供奉したのが起こりと伝えられている
その後、細川藩政時代にも継続され、随兵行列の三役（随兵頭・長柄頭・御幸奉行）は家中で選抜された高位の者が務めた
19年度の奉納団体は67団体
参加者数は約17000人の熊本一を誇る祭礼になっています
