Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha - Shizuoka - 富士山本宮浅間大社 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in the southwestern foothills of Mount Fuji in the city Fujinomiya, Fujisan Sengen Shrine a regionally important shrine and head shrine of over 1300 Sengen and Asama shrines across Japan. Originally built over a millennium ago for the protection against a volcanic eruption, the Fujisan Sengen Shrine is also one of the traditional starting points to climb Mt. Fuji. While being one of Japan's oldest shrines, the Fujisan Sengen Shrine has suffered from many natural disasters and all that remains intact today is its unique two-story inner shrine construction as well as its outer shrine buildings and tower gate.
Alongside its heavy cultural and spiritual heritage the Fujisan Sengen Shrine also offers a beautiful sakura festival thanks to its 500 cherry trees usually blooming around late March to early April.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha (Japan Trip) / 富士山本宮浅間大社
It's a Shinto shrine located in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, and is part of Japan's World Heritage site: Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration. It's relatively close to Mount Fuji. In Fujinomiya you may have a good view of the mountain when weather permits. You also may stop by at a Japanese stir-fried noodle (a.k.a. yakisoba) shop near the shrine. It serves Fujinomiya Yakisoba, which is a contest-wining dish and has become nationally known after the contest. It's delicious.

Japan 2K19 RWC trip: SHIZUOKA - FUJINOMIYA + Ecopa stadium (SA v Italy)
I went to Shizuoka early October 2K19 to attend the much anticipated showdown between South Africa and Italy as part of the 2K19 Rugby World Cup, which was organized across multiple venues in Japan.
Ecopa stadium is one of the largest (capacity of 50.000) and the atmosphere inside was awesome. Unfortunately, the game itself was not as entertaining as I would have thought as SA dominated Italy from the start.
The Shizuoka prefecture is the best place in Japan to watch the mythical Mt Fuji (called Fujisan 富士山 in Japanese) and I went to the lovely town of Fujinomiya to learn more about it. I recommend visiting the Fujisan world heritage center, Mt Fuji is more than a mountain in Japan, it's a national icon and a symbol of Japan.
In Fujisan, I also visited Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine. This shrine was the headquarters of the Sengen shrines around Japan worshipping Mt Fuji as the deity named Princess of Blossoms (Konohana-sakuya-hime). On the shrine's ground 500 cherry trees are dedicated to her.
Now some facts about Mount Fuji:
Mount Fuji is located on Honshu Island, Japan, near the Pacific Coast.
Mount Fuji is an active composite volcano that last erupted in 1707. It has been classified as being at ‘low risk’ of erupting again, despite recent nearby earthquakes which often signal that an eruption is imminent.
It is one of Japan’s ‘Three Holy Mountains’, alongside Mount Haku and Mount Tate.
Mount Fuji is 3,766.24 meters high (12,389.2 feet).
It is the highest mountain in Japan.
There are three cities that surround Mount Fuji: Gotemba, Fujiyoshida and Fujinomiya
Mount Fuji is 100km southwest of Japan’s capital, Tokyo, and can be seen from the city on a clear day.
Mount Fuji has been classified as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty because of how symmetrical the mountain looks.
The first person to climb Mount Fuji was a Buddhist monk in 663 AD.
The indigenous inhabitants of ancient Japan, called the Ainu, considered it sacred. Mt. Fuji’s name may be derived from Fuchi, the Ainu god of fire and the hearth.
By the 12th century, Mt. Fuji became a destination for those practising asceticism (shugendo), seeking a rebirth from their time on the mountain.
Eight major shrines were built around the foot of the mountain and hundreds of smaller ones have since been added. The most popular shrine was first constructed in
806 C.E. The Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha was originally founded during the reign of Emperor Suinin.
Mt. Fuji is also believed to be a gathering point for the spirits of deceased ancestors, and prayers are offered to them as well as blessings for safety from volcanic eruption, fire, and during childbirth.
The mountain not only has its own shrines but there are over 13,000 shrines spread across Japan dedicated to Fujisan.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine
Cool little shrine at the base of Mount Fuji. Apparently, many people start their climb of the mountain here. My favorite part was the little pond to the side of the shrine. Song is “Breath of Fresh Air“ by Gavin Clark.

There are about 1300 shrines called “Sengen Shrine” in Japan. This Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine is one of the oldest and highest ranking shrines of them.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.

Kitaguchi Hongū Fuji Sengen Jinja (北口本宮冨士浅間神社, North Entrance Fuji ), winter 2018 27 december
There are more than a thousand Fuji Sengen shrines across Japan, dedicated to Princess Konohanasakuya, the Shinto deity associated with Mount Fuji. Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine, formally known as Kitaguchi Hongū Fuji Sengen Jinja (北口本宮冨士浅間神社, North Entrance Fuji Sengen Shrine), is the main Sengen Shrine on the north side of the mountain. The head shrine of them all is the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha on the opposite side of the mountain in Fujinomiya.
Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine stands in a dense forest and is set off from the road by a long approach lined by stone lanterns and shaded by tall cedar trees. The shrine's red painted buildings include a main hall dating from 1615, a dancing stage and a few auxiliary buildings.
