Japan Travel: Beauty of Porcelain at the Ceramic Museum, Arita, Saga04 Moopon
Arita Town located in Western Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, is a lovely town known for its local porcelain pottery, Arita-yaki. Over 400 years ago, Toyotomi Hideyoshi had brought several high skilled Korean craftsmen to Japan. One of these men discovered kaolin, the rock needed in producing porcelain in the Izumiyama Quarry. Thus, Arita Town became the first place in Japan to produce porcelain items.
The Prefectural Museum of Kyushu Ceramic Arts is located near Arita Station. It is the best source for local pottery. Various collections such as the Shibata Collection, displaying Arita pottery manufactured from 1603 to 1867, have been shown at this museum. The museum vows to contribute to the local cultural heritage as well as develop ceramics and pottery throughout the Kyushu region.

Fukagawa-Hagi-Yaki Ware Cha-wan
Fukagawa-Hagi-Yaki Ware Cha-wan made by 11th Kourai Toubee
HansTheo Baumann. From series to oneoffs
His output has made it into the history books. Once described as a true master of German design, he was among the protagonists who shaped the essence of Made in Germany and Die Gute Form in the wake of World War II -- advocating a timeless and aesthetic design idiom. In 1959 Hans Theo Baumann (b. 1924 in Basel, Switzerland) was one of the co-founders of the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID). Not only did he work with the top companies of Germany's porcelain industry, he also joined forces with the architect Egon Eiermann, whose buildings epitomize the young German Federal Republic.
Baumann joined Philipp Rosenthal at an early stage and spent some time working in India and Japan. For more than half a century, his often prize-winning and widely exhibited designs were a decisive influence on the German design scene. Clear-cut, timeless shapes, high functionality and a holistic approach typify his richly diversified output.
Baumann's successful products include dinner service and porcelain objects, tea and coffee pots, cups and plates, candle holders and vases. Philipp Rosenthal helped him launch his career as a porcelain designer as early as 1954. In addition to Rosenthal and Thomas, he counted Arzberg, Schönwald, Hutschenreuther and KPM Berlin among his clients, as well as other companies in Germany and abroad.
However, Baumann was not only interested in serial design, but also had a penchant for handcrafted low-volume productions and one-offs. The result: very unusual designs for the Karlsruhe-based Majolika ceramics manufactory and the Japanese porcelain manufactory Fukagawa, which are now rare and highly sought after items.

Thrift shopping while visiting Bellingham, WA - Travel Vlog
This week's video was all about thrifting and picking while in Bellingham, WA!
I know that many people love to thrift when on vacation, so I asked my Aunt Nancy to help me with this video. She has been thrifting since she was 16 years old and has owned a couple antique shops! She will give you some thrifting travel tips, and we will show you the best places to shop when visiting Bellingham, WA. Also, to top off this video, we did a haul at the end to show some of our favorite items purchased during the trip.
*Argh, never edit late at night! During the haul portion of the video, we keep saying Fukagama, but we meant Fukagawa Arita. However, I made an edit on the video that misspelled it as Fukigawa. Yikes! Anyways, the pretty lotus plate is by Fukagawa Arita (Japan). Final answer....
If you would like to know more about my channel and the types of videos I publish, take a look at my Intro video here:
Here are links to the places we visited during the video (all of these have multiple locations in many parts of the United States and some in Canada):
Habitat for Humanity (Bellingham)
Goodwill (Bellingham)
Salvation Army (Bellingham)
Value Village (Bellingham - Savers in other areas)
I used Ebay and Etsy to find all of my price comps.
