Seven Japanese Gods of Luck Festival (Shichifukujin) - Hatsu Konpira
At Kotohiragu Shrine a small shrine in Tokyo, they have a small festival with a small parade of the Shichifukujin, the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan. Hatsu Konpira is the shrine's first fair of the new year so the parade of the seven lucky gods is to ensure good luck, good health, and prosperity in the coming year.
It's a very short parade only within the grounds of the shrines but the costumes and masks of the seven gods are really great. It was a good look into how important it is in Japan to pray for good luck and health at the beginning of the year. The seven gods walk about dispensing their blessings on the people. There are quite a number of these Shichifukujin type festivals around New Year's.
Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, Japan- A Sakura Delight!
Kofukuji is a Buddhist temple, and is located about 1km southwest of Todaiji emple. It is at the west end of Nara Park. This temple is one of 9 constructions of Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara designated as a World Heritage Site. This temple was founded in 669 by Kamatari Fujiwara (614-669), who was the ancestor of Fujiwara Clan which had been a noble family from ancient times to medieval times. The original temple was built in Kyoto, but Fuhito Fujiwara (659-720), Kamatari's son, moved to the current place in 710, because Nara became the capital of Japan.
Fujiwara Clan had power and position, so this temple was enlarged by not only the clan but also the government.
And this temple had been the center of power through ancient and medieval times.
But this temple became a normal temple after the foundation of Edo government in the early 17th century.

Setsubun in Kyoto and Nara - Devils, Gods, and Geisha
Setsubun (Feb 3rd) is a Japanese Spring ritual where Japanese drive bad luck in the form of Oni (devils) out of their homes with a handful of tossed beans. At temples and shrines, they do mame maki which is throwing beans and other things to gathered crowds.
Setsubun is one of my favorite Japanese holidays and I've been celebrating it for the past 6 years or more. In the past I always celebrated it at temples and shrines in or around Tokyo. This year I headed for Kyoto taking in Nara in the evening as well.
I started Setsubun on the 2nd with some Geisha mame maki (geisha were throwing beans that is not that they were throwing geisha). On the 3rd, I went to 6 places starting with Yasaka Shrine for a brief mame maki by people in old court costumes then I went to Heian Shrine where they were doing Kyogen, traditional comedy plays set inbetween Noh dramas. After Heian I went to the small temple Shogo-In where they pelted 3 devils then later the devils threw beans at us! At a tiny temple near the old Imperial Palace, they had three devils arrive with weapons only to be driven away by beans and chants.
After that I took a train to Nara and got there in time to see yet another Oni demonstration. Here the devils were defeated by Bishamonten or Bishamon, Buddhist deity and Guardian of the North. It was like spiritual pro-wrestling with weapons. After that I went to Kasuga Taisha Shrine for a cool down. They had their hanging lanterns lit up for Setsubun. It was very beautiful.
Whew! After all that I was Setsubuned Out!

Fukuoka Road Trip - Americans First Onsen & Dog Cafe! - Japan Trip Episode 12
We made it to Fukuoka and met up with my Japanese YouTuber friend Koichi. He took us on a road trip to some cool spots outside of the city. Plus we got to go to the Shiba Inu cafe, so many cute dogs! It was nice to travel in a car and not have to worry about trains and buses, and with Koichi knowing the language, it was so much easier for Shawn and I.
Thanks again Koichi for showing us around your area of Japan, we had a great time!

Kyoto Autumn 2019 Fushimi Inari Taisha and Toufukuji Temple
Fushimi Inari Taisha is Kyoto’s most important Shinto shrine and one of its most impressive attractions. Located in southern Kyoto, it is famed for its variety of shrines and vermilion torii shrine gates, with thousands of them winding their way up the sacred Mount Inari. Whatever you do, don’t miss it.
About Fushimi Inarai Taisha
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of Inari, the god of rice, sake and prosperity and patron of business, merchants and manufacturers. The shrine sits at the base of Mount Inari and includes many smaller sub shrines which span 4 kilometres up the 233 meter (764 ft) mountain. Each of the famous torii shrine gates has been donated by an individual or a Japanese business in the hope of receiving good luck and fortune. The name of the donor is inscribed in black ink on the back of each gate.
Tofukuji Temple was first built in 1236 by the great statesman Kujo Michiie who, for the sake of his family prestige, wanted to build a major temple to rival the great temples of Nara: Todaiji and Kofukuji. In fact, the name Tofukuji was created from the “To” of Todaiji and the “fuku” of Kofukuji. The first abbot of the temple was the monk Enni Ben’en who had studied Zen meditation in China, but who viewed all forms of Buddhism as harmonious. In addition to Zen teachings, Enni Ben’en (1202–1280) is said to have brought back from China, Sung dynasty literature, udon noodles, and a variety of green tea now very popular in Shizuoka prefecture. For this reason his birthday is celebrated in Shizuoka City every November 1st as “Shizuoka Tea Day.”

Beautiful Kyoto: Autumn 2016 Tōfuku-ji [4K]
Kyoto's autumn leaves (kōyō) are some of the most famous in the country, and one of the most popular places to view the changing colors is at Tōfuku-ji temple. One of the city's Five Great Zen Temples, Tōfuku-ji was founded in 1236 and is home to a famous series of gardens and one of the oldest Sanmon Gates in Japan. When it comes to seasonal delights, however, go to Tōfuku-ji for their gorgeous mini-valley filled with maple trees. The Tsūten-kyō Bridge crosses over this rich sea of colors, allowing visitors to feel as if they are floating on a sea of red autumn leaves.

A 12-day trip to Japan still seems too short for me since Japan has so much to offer. Our itinerary includes 4 cities Nikko, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. We had a lot of “wow” and “surprised” moments with experiences which we think they will be helpful to you guys.
