City Description:
Salvador, the capital of Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia, is known for its Portuguese colonial architecture, Afro-Brazilian culture and a tropical coastline. The Pelourinho neighborhood is its historic heart, with cobblestone alleys opening onto large squares, colorful buildings and baroque churches such as São Francisco, featuring gilt woodwork. From Pelourinho, the Elevador Lacerda art deco elevator descends a cliff to the waterfront and the Mercado Modelo, a large crafts market. Beachside Rio Vermelho is the heart of the city’s restaurant and nightlife scene. At the tip of the peninsula, the Santo Antônio da Barra fort and its accompanying lighthouse and nautical museum overlook All Saints’ Bay. At street stalls all over Salvador, Baianas (women in traditional all-white outfits) sell acarajés and abarás, Afro-Brazilian dishes based on black-eyed peas. Carnaval time brings samba and axé music, massive street parties and parades.
Weather and Events:
The weather is warm and humid year-round, with more rain in winter (Jul–Aug). Peak seasons include summer (Dec–Mar) and Jul–Sep, particularly around New Year’s and Carnaval (Feb/Mar, dates vary), one of the world’s largest. Other major events include the Bom Jesus dos Navegantes festival (Jan), with its boat parade, and the Iemanjá Festival (Feb), dedicated to the Afro-Brazilian goddess of the sea.

WELCOME to SALVADOR de BAHIA BRAZIL - TOUR and VLOG - 2019
Bahia is considered the cultural heart of Brazil, and fourth largest state located in the northern part of the country. Today we are in Salvador, the capital of Bahia located along the coast and noted for its African and European heritage.
Salvador de Bahia was the first Colonial capital of Brazil. The city is one of the oldest in the New World, founded by the Portuguese settlers in 1549. We try the region’s exquisites cuisine, meet the friendly locals, explore the historic center of Pelourinho, and listen to the drum beats of Olodum.

SALVADOR, BAHIA - Before ever going to Brazil, Salvador was one of the top cities I wanted to visit - and finally this is the time. In this all out ultimate street food tour of Salvador we’ll focus especially on Afro-Brazilian food and culture, the heart of Salvador, Bahia. The people were amazing, the food was delicious. #Salvador #BrazilianFood #Acarajé #streetfood
Sao Joaquim Market - To begin this street food tour we started in the morning at Sao Joaquim Market, one of the main fruits and vegetables market, with restaurant and food as well. One thing you’ll see all over the market, different from other parts of Brazil is dendê oil, the orange palm oil originally from West Africa.
Recanto Da Lucia - At the market we ate breakfast at Recanto Da Lucia, a small local Brazilian food stall serving amazing dishes like feijoada and pirão. Total price - 80 BRL ($20.61)
Dona Susana - Next up on this Afro-Brazilian food tour of Salvador, we drover to Dona Susana, a restaurant under the highway, with a million dollar view. The main dish to eat in Bahia is Moqueca Bahiana, a stew of fish or seafood in palm oil and coconut milk. Her’s was outstanding as was the ensopado de camarão and her version of pirão. One of the most stunning locations so far in Brazil. Total price - 87 BRL ($22.41)
Pelourinho - This is the center of the historic city of Salvador, with a distinct Portuguese style and influence. If you look around, you might think you’re in Portugal.
Capoeira - Pelourinho is a center of art and culture and I had a chance to learn about Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, but a dance at the same time. It’s amazing to watch and they even volunteered me to stand as they came dangerously close to kicking me!
Elevador Lacerda - In Pelourinho you’ll also find the Elevador Lacerda, which takes you from lover Salvador to the upper part of Salvador.
Price - .15 BRL ($0.03) per person
Mercado Modelo - One of the main central old city markets in Salvador, Bahia is Mercado Modelo, and while most of the market is pretty touristy, Jacibar on the outside serves up delicious local dishes. We ordered Xinxin de Galinha, Bobó de camarão, and Caruru. It was an incredible meal. Total price - 180 BRL ($46.37)
Tambores e Cores - Samba beats represent Salvador, Bahia, and the thundering drums are a must see when you’re in Bahia, Brazil.
Boteco Di Janela - In the evening we went to Boteco Di Janela, a bar and restaurant, friendly owners, and delicious seafood. We ate sarapatel - a blood stew, and sururu - small local mussels.
Acarajé da Ivone - If there’s one Brazilian street food snack you have to eat in Salvadar, it’s Acarajé, a life-changing bun of blackeyed peas deep fried in palm oil and stuffed with vatapa, caruru, shrimp, and salad. It’s is unbelievable and the owners at Acarajé da Ivone were equally as friendly and hospitable. I also had an Abara, the same thing except the black eyed pea fritter is steamed instead of fried. Price - 8 BRL ($2.06) per
Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil, exceeded my expectations - the food and people were outstanding and made it a city and destination I will never forget. What a stunning combination of natural beauty, food, and hospitality.

South America Vlog #5 - Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Another week on this adventure!
During our stay in Salvador we stayed in a place that had open ventilation so we couldn't close the windows, which of course led to getting eaten alive by mosquitos. You can watch us battle it out with them!
Took a few beach days as well to recover from the exhaustion of travel, one of which involved trying to get a video with all the locals jumping in the water with me. I thought it would be an easy task, but it was far from it.
Salvador, Bahia is a beautiful place full of culture and dominantly Afro-Brazilian culture. You will see a completely different side of Brazil than in the southern parts or in places such as Rio. Definitely worth the trip and we've heard that Carnaval is best here from more than a few people, so if you're looking for a destination to spend Carnaval next year, it might just be here.

Salvador Bahia - Brazil
See the best accommodation Salvador da Bahia is a city on the northeast coast of Brazil and the capital of the Northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. Salvador is also known as Brazil's capital of happiness due to its easygoing population and countless popular outdoor parties, including its street carnival. The first colonial capital of Brazil, the city is one of the oldest in the country and in the New World. For a long time, it was simply known as Bahia, and appears under that name (or as Salvador da Bahia, Salvador of Bahia so as to differentiate it from other Brazilian cities of the same name) on many maps and books from before the mid-20th century. Salvador is the third most populous Brazilian city, after São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and it is the ninth most populous city in Latin America.
The city of Salvador is notable in Brazil for its cuisine, music and architecture, and its metropolitan area is the wealthiest in Brazil's Northeast, its poorest region. Over 80% of the population of metropolitan region of Salvador has Black African ancestry, the African influence in many cultural aspects of the city makes it the center of Afro-Brazilian culture and this reflects in turn a curious situation in which African-associated cultural practices are celebrated, but Black Bahians due to their low income are apart from most of the city life options. The historical center of Salvador, frequently called the Pelourinho, is renowned for its Portuguese colonial architecture with historical monuments dating from the 17th through the 19th centuries and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
Salvador is located on a small, roughly triangular peninsula that separates Todos os Santos Bay from the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The bay, which gets its name from having been discovered on All Saints' Day forms a natural harbor. Salvador is a major export port, lying at the heart of the Recôncavo Baiano, a rich agricultural and industrial region encompassing the northern portion of coastal Bahia. The local terrain is diverse ranging from flat to rolling to hills and low mountains.
A particularly notable feature is the escarpment that divides Salvador into the Cidade Alta (Upper Town - rest of the city) and the Cidade Baixa (Lower Town - northwest region of the city), the former some 85 m (279 ft) above the latter,[1] with the city's cathedral and most administrative buildings standing on the higher ground. An elevator (the first installed in Brazil), known as Elevador Lacerda, has connected the two sections since 1873, having since undergone several upgrades.
The Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport connects Salvador with Brazilian cities and also operates international flights, and the city is home to the Federal University of Bahia. ( source Wikipedia )

Exploring Culture in Salvador, Bahia - Brazil
Throughout my time in Brazil I spent about one week in Salvador, Bahia. It is a beautiful city full of afro-brazilian culture as it is actually one of the most concentrated cities of African heritage in the world. You will see tons of live music, the old city of Pelourinho, beautiful beaches and more. I wish I had more time to explore this place but I was able to create this video to give you an idea of what you can experience here!

Salvador: Bahian Carnival (Portuguese: Carnaval baiano) is the annual carnival festival celebrated in the Brazilian state of Bahia, mainly in its capital, Salvador. The event lasts officially for six full days: it starts on a Thursday, then follows the usual five days of carnival (from Friday to Wednesday at noon). The term may also be used to comprise related events that happen immediately before or after the carnival in Bahia. Therefore, extending the duration for up to twelve days. The festival happens simultaneously in many sites, being the most famous the Campo Grande track (in the upper part of the city), Barra-Ondina track (by the shore), and Pelourinho (the historical neighborhood). It features many different rhythms and has performances of several music groups. The most traditional presentations are the trio elétrico parades, and Afro blocks presentations. Estimations state that approximately 2.5 million people (being 1.5 million tourists) participate in the festivities every year. Economic reports show that the festival has a large impact at Salvadors local economy.
