Bay of Islands - Hole in the Rock Cruise

Take a half-day Bay of Islands cruise in search of dolphins and other marine life. Enjoy the views from our catamaran Dolphin Seeker as we journey around the Bay of Islands right to the end of the Cape Brett Peninsula, to the famous Hole in the Rock on Motukokako Island.
According to Māori legend, local warriors used to paddle through the Hole in the Rock in their canoes before departing for battle. Drops of water from the cave roof above were a good omen. If conditions permit, your skipper will expertly guide the ship through the narrow space... and if you get dripped on, consider yourself lucky!
Keep an eye out for common and bottlenose dolphins, whales and other marine life during your cruise, and have your camera ready as we get you up close to the action. Our purpose-built catamaran is licensed by DOC (the Department of Conservation) for dolphin viewing and our crew have years of experience locating dolphins in these waters. If conditions permit, choose to swim with the dolphins (additional cost).
Stop off at picturesque Urupukapuka Island and relax on the beach, or walk to the top of the island to enjoy 360° views of this beautiful region before we make our way back to port. As part of your cruise we offer a free ferry ticket so you can explore Paihia or Russell at your leisure.
Dolphin Seeker has indoor and outdoor seating available, and the largest outdoor viewing decks in the Bay of Islands. Hot and cold refreshments are available on board, and a picnic lunch can be purchased at time of booking (or feel free to bring your own lunch).

Hole in the Rock/Dolphin Cruise - Fullers GreatSights Bay of Islands
The World famous Northland landmark, the 'Hole in the Rock', also known as Motukōkako and Piercy Island in Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
.
WHERE/WHAT IS IT?
Sprouting proudly out of the Pacific Ocean off the wild end of the Bay of Islands' Cape Brett is Motukokako (Piercy Island as it was named by James Cook).
It's an island dominated by its sheer cliffs that rise 148 metres out of the sea. It's likely Motukokako would've been considered just another big rock in the ocean had that same ocean not carved out a spectacular 16m-high hole at its south-western end.
.
HISTORY
According to Māori legend, local warriors used to paddle through the Hole in the Rock in their canoes before departing for battle. Drops of water from the cave roof above were a good omen.

Fullers Original Cream Trip Cruise Bay of Islands
See all the highlights of the Bay of Islands in one day as you experience the original Fullers Cream Trip that take in the awesome Hole in the Rock, swim with & view dolphins, step ashore at one of the secluded coves as you explore some of the most beautiful islands
Bay of Islands - The Cream Trip
- Explore the Bay of Islands on the cruise that started it all! Stop for lunch on an island and travel to the famous Hole in the Rock. View and swim with the dolphins or boom net alongside the vessel. The Cream Trip is the perfect cruise for nature lovers, and the most extensive historical cruise in the Bay.
In 1927, Albert Ernest Fuller acquired a delivery route around the Bay of Islands known as the Cream Trip. Locals and visitors began to come along for the ride, and tourism in the Bay of Islands was born. Today we still follow in the path of the original Cream Trip, delivering mail and supplies to island residents and showing you the best of the Bay on a relaxed day-long cruise. This is the perfect cruise for nature lovers, and the most extensive historical cruise offered in the Bay of Islands.
Enjoy stunning views of the islands as we travel out through the islands, dropping off deliveries on our way. On arrival at Cape Brett Lighthouse, the farthest post of the original Cream Trip, we take you through the stunning Hole in the Rock at Motukokako Island. You’ll also see the impressive Black Rocks and Marsden Cross, where the first Christian sermon in New Zealand was held in 1814.
See dolphins in their natural environment and if conditions are suitable, go swimming alongside these inquisitive creatures – it’s a life-changing experience! Alternatively try boom-netting, hanging on to the net as we glide through the water.
Step ashore at Otehei Bay on stunning Urupukapuka Island and relax on the beach, go for a swim or take a stroll. From the top of the hill above the beach you can enjoy panoramic views of the whole Bay. A picnic lunch can be pre-purchased, or feel free to bring your own lunch.
- Hole in the Rock, Marsden Cross and Black Rocks
- Dolphin viewing and swimming
- Spacious viewing decks
- Urupukapuka Island stopover
Bay of Islands - Cape Reinga Day Trip
- Take a magical full-day tour to the top of New Zealand via Ninety Mile Beach. A visit to New Zealand is not complete without a journey to the very top of the North Island – Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua). Uncover the wild beauty of this vast and untouched region, rich in Māori culture and tradition, on a full-day return tour from Paihia or Kerikeri.
Drive along the sand on Ninety Mile Beach as the waves crash beside the custom-built coach. Feel the sand between your toes as you help your driver guide dig for shellfish (conditions permitting). Your off-road journey continues up Te Paki Stream, stopping at the massive sand dunes where you can experience the thrills and spills of sand-boarding. Clambering up and surfing down the dunes (if you dare!) is sure to get your heart pumping.
Visit the Puketi Kauri Forest and get up close to ancient and majestic giant kauri trees and native bush. Stroll along an elevated walkway as these graceful giants surround you, and learn about conservation efforts to preserve the forest today.
As you approach Cape Reinga, hear the stories of this significant site where, according to Māori legend, spirits depart on their journey home to Hawaiki. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views, visit the iconic lighthouse, and see the point where the Tasman Sea and the mighty Pacific Ocean come crashing together. Leave a living legacy by planting a native tree at Cape Reinga (additional cost – ask your driver guide for more information).
Your journey home will be equally enjoyable as your tour guide's combination of local insight, extensive historical knowledge and fantastic sense of humour create an unforgettable adventure.
