The Fumaça waterfall - Smoke Fallsis a Brazilian waterfall located between the municipalities of Lençóis and Palmeiras in the state of Bahia.
The waterfall is in the Chapada Diamantina, within the well-known Chapada Diamantina National Park and is 340 meters high, being the second largest in Brazil, smaller only than the El Dorado Waterfall in the Amazon.
The name refers to effect caused by the force of the wind, which prevents the water from reaching the base, forming a visual view as if it were smoke.
There are two ways to reach it: from above, walking 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) from the ecological base placed in the Vale do Capão, or from below, after a three-day trek starting from Lençoís.
This video shows the waterfall from the top, starting from the Capão Valley.

340 metros de queda d´agua e 420 metros de altura - a Cachoeira da Fumaça é um espetáculo da natureza. A cachoeira tem este nome pois suas águas são espalhadas pela força dos ventos no vale. Pra ver esta maravilha uma trilha de 2 horas, partindo da mágica Vale do Capão, sem necessidade de guia, uma hora de subida e depois uma hora nos gerais, terreno plano. Passando pelo curral feito de pedras usado pelos criadores de gado do passado que levavam o gado para se alimentar nos gerais. Nascentes de rios e muito mais...apreciem o vídeo e comentem!

Fumaça waterfall, highest one in Brazil. Sometimes taken by the wind, defies all gravity and 'recycles' itself.
It takes 2 hours of climbing and hiking to reach it, but it is worth the trip!

Day 1+2: Águas Claras, Vale do Capão, Cachoeira da Fumaça
On the first day we hiked from the highway near Morro do Pai Inácio to Águas Claras and then to Vale do Capão for the night. The second day we did a dayhike up to Cachoeira da Fumaça and returned to Vale do Capão for a second night.
All videos and photos have been taken during an 8 days tour through the Chapada Diamantina National Park. Chapada Diamantina lies 400km west/inland from Salvador in the Brazilian state of Bahia. One of the main attractions is the Vale do Pati which is considered the best trekking destination in Brazil.

Chapada Diamantina by Drone | Brazil | Sven & Melody 6 months in South America
In this episode we show you Chapada Diamantina National Park in the Brazilian state Bahia. This cinematic drone video contains aerial footage of the waterfalls / cachoeira's of the park. The Chapada Diamantina is one of our favourite parts of Brazil. We did a three day hike from Lencois to Vale do Capão with our Guide Ito (Surya Chapada)

The Chapada Diamantina has probably the best hiking in Brazil and is a paradise for swimming in pools and for waterfalls like the stunning Cachoeira Fumaça, which has a 400m vertical drop.
Chapada is a term describing highland plateaus and cliffs and Diamantina refers to the diamonds that were found here and ‘mined’ extensively from the mid C19th.
The mountains are formed by some of the oldest rocks in the world, mainly sedimentary rocks like cuarcites and agglomerate rocks. They form a landscape of flat top mountains (similar to the Venezuelan Tepis) with sheer cliffs rising high above surrounding flatlands. The rocks have an orange colour that looks wonderful, particularly at sunset.
The area is about 400km inland, west of Salvador in Bahia state in the Northeast region of Brazil in the middle of the dry sertão (back-country plains).
It is an important water source with many rivers starting here. These rivers make incredible waterfalls as they fall off the vertical walls of the mountains. The vegetation is of open grassy fields with isolated trees (similar to the African savannah) with some thicker vegetation along the rivers.
At the top of the flat top hills the vegetation is particularly weird and fantastic. Wildlife is not very easy to spot. Apart from humming birds and vultures you are unlikely to see the anteaters or jaguars which live here.

The Cachoeira da Fumaça (Smoke Falls, once known as Glass Falls) is 340 m tall waterfall in Bahia, Brazil. It was believed to be the country's highest waterfall until the 353 m tall Cachoeira do Araca (Cachoeira do El Dorado) was recently discovered in the Amazon. Cachoeira da Fumaça is located in Chapada Diamantina, an attractive region for adventurers, named that way because the tiny water flow is sprayed by the wind before it touches the ground. However, depending on the season, it can be completely dry. There are two ways to reach it: from above, walking 6 kilometers from the ecological base placed in the Vale do Capão, or from below, after a three-day trek starting from Lençoís, Chapada's best-known city. Local people knew about the waterfall but wider public learned about it after it was noticed by bush pilot George Glass in 1960.
