Granada Nicaragua: Monkey Island
Monkey Island is one of the islets of Granada in Lake Nicaragua aka Lake Cocibolca or Lake Granada. This is the largest Lake in Central America and a great place to spend the day.
We booked our tour while walking in the Calzada area of Granada. We had heard about the tour and decided to see how we could do for a price. Que Tuanis Tours gave us the tour for $12 USD, which was a really good price.
They came and picked us up at our hostel and along with some other travelers, we headed to the lake.
Nicaragua is Hot!! This was an amazing way to stay cool All Day!! The boat ride through the little islands is really cool. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and I learned a lot while having Fun.
We pulled up near Monkey Island but couldnt tie off. Monkey Island belongs to the monkeys and we are not allowed there. They have to come to us, on the boat. We had some competition with another boat. They had potato chips and we had bananas...Not much Competition, They Won!
We got to hang out on one of the Islands and explore a little before relaxing by the water with a drink.
It was a beautiful ride back across the lake as the sun was setting at the end of the day.
I highly Recommend trying this tour for so many reasons...
1) Its Fun 2) You get to feed Monkeys 3) It's $12 4) It's a way to stay cool 5) It is so beautiful 6) Learn more about Nicaragua

Surf With Amigas in Nicaragua Feb 11-18 2017
We had a particularly big swell this week and a big group of Amigas to charge it. Surf, yoga, adventure, and connecting with the local community made for an action packed week!
Backpackers trip in Central America
All people can be divided into two groups: some spend their entire lives where they were born, while others wander the world in search of the best places. Thousands of people over many centuries have left their homes and set off on a journey to discover new lands and continents.
The study, mastering and enslavement of America began with the Caribbean Islands — and accidentally brought the caravels of Columbus there. Then they moved a little further West and hit the continent in this area of Central America and Mexico.
This area will be the purpose of the next stage of the project World without visa. In this route, I have included Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.
To travel around Central America is very dangerous. It is one of the region of the world that is most populated with gangsters. Here tourists are not only victims of pick-pocketting but are also robbed. The vast majority of bandits are armed with firearms and they do not hesitate to use them.
But this region has so much to offer, that it is worth the risk. The ruins of Mayan cities hiding in the deep jungle, active volcanoes, the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean sea, and the architectural gems of colonial Mexico and Guatemala.

MEXICO: PROSTITUTION
Spanish/Nat
Mexico's prostitutes are protesting their plight in society as the poverty conference in Copenhagen focuses on women's issues.
These forgotten women of Mexico are marking International Women's Day, by struggling to survive in a country in the throes of an economic crisis.
These are the forgotten women of Mexico - the ones that in order to survive in a harsh society must turn to the oldest profession.
These women - the prostitutes of Mexico City - try to find solace in the one thing that is constant in their lives, their faith.
On International Women's Day, groups of prostitutes attended mass at a local church.
Official figures puts the number of prostitutes in Mexico City at 200,000. Most get paid 50 pesos from each client, the equivalent of less than 10 dollars.
With the recent fall of the peso, their situation has gotten even worse.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
What leads us into this occupation is the economic situation that we have lived for many years and that every day gets worse. The problem is the crisis.
SUPER CAPTION: Ana Maria Casimiro, leader of the prostitute group M-U-S-A
Faced with government indifference to their plight and fearful of the growth of the AIDS epidemic, the prostitutes of Mexico City began organizing themselves.
The two most powerful groups are M-U-S-A (Women United Against AIDS) and HUMANS AGAINST AIDS.
According to the groups leaders , the two groups have more than
20,000 affiliates nationwide.
Products of an extremely Catholic society, many have turned to the church.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
We have to treat them like human beings, with respect. And by treating them respectfully like human beings they'll respond in a positive way.
SUPER CAPTION: Father Jose Ruiz
With the continuing decline of the peso, the economic situation in Mexico has taken a turn for the worse.
This only makes the drama of the daily lives of the prostitutes that much worse.

Panama Canal and Miraflores Lock: Visiting the Panama Canal
One of my life's goals of places to see has always been the Panama Canal.
This happened last week when Carrie and I went and watched ships going through the Miraflores lock.
What you are about to see is 1 hour and 15 minutes of video, condensed into about 2 minutes.
While you're watching, I'm going to share some interesting facts about the Panama Canal.
When it was first built, about 1,000 ships would go through the canal every year.
But, over 14,000 ships went through the canal in 2008 alone!
We almost had the Nicaragua Canal too!
According to a book called Overthrow, in 1898 the head of a group that owned lots of land in Panama
hired a US Attorney to lobby the US Congress to build a canal across Panama, and not across Nicaragua.
In 1902, Cromwell noticed a 10-cent Nicaraguan postal stamp, produced by the United States American Bank Note Company,
which erroneously depicted a fuming Momotombo volcano. Momotombo is in Nicaragua, was nearly dormant and stands more than
100 mi from the proposed Nicaraguan canal path, but Cromwell planted a story in the New York Sun reporting that the Momotombo
volcano had erupted and caused a series of seismic shocks.
Thereafter he sent leaflets with the stamps pasted on them to all U.S. Senators as witness to the volcanic activity in Nicaragua.
On June 19, 1902, three days after senators received the stamps, they voted for the Panama route for the canal.
For his lobbying efforts, Cromwell received the sum of $800,000.
Well, the history of it is a bit convoluted, but the canal is an amazing feat, and was a wonderful place to visit.
Carrie and I had a great time at the Panama Canal.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
