Working Together - Fiji's women lend their men a hand | Global 3000
Women in the tiny village of Daku on the Fijian island of Viti Levu are fighting climate change. Because the men are catching fewer fish and shrimp, women have stepped into the breach. They're selling hand-woven fans made of palm leaves. With the clearing of the mangroves, the Rewa River is now clogged with sediment and the number of fish has declined dramatically. The village's 400 residents are making up for the economic loss through the sale of fans.

Where does FIJI Water come from?
You’ve enjoyed our water, now discover the remarkable story of FIJI Water for yourself. Starting in clouds high above the South Pacific, our water falls as tropical rain on the pristine islands of Fiji. There it is slowly filtered by volcanic rock until it collects in a natural artesian aquifer, where it is protected and preserved from external elements. Untouched by man, it truly is Earth’s Finest Water.

Fiji 2019 - Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat: Part 1
Fiji September 2019.
After a night over in Nadi we started early morning for our flight ✈️ to Taveuni island ???? . We boarded a small aircraft and were not only surprised by how smooth the flight was but also how beautiful the dotted reefs were below. Some of which we would explore over our next few days, such as the famous Rainbow ???? Reef.
After a small drive from Taveuni’s remote airstrip we were greeted by 2 men from Dolphin Bay Divers, our dive retreat who would take us across to our secluded location located on the adjacent island Vanua Levu which is Fiji’s second biggest island, largely covered in lush tropical ???? jungle.
We were staying in a bure’, which is a cottage style hut located within the jungle and only a few steps away from the beach ????. After 2 days of transit the logical first instinct was to find a couple of palm trees to string up my hammock and get a little R&R ????.
While Miranda started her Padi open water ???? diving course I started with the regions most sought after dive location, the Great White Wall. This was a magnificent dive and truly earned its reputation as one of the worlds premier dive sites. Unfortunately my GoPro was left recording in my bag and my SD Card was completely full. Something I didn’t realise until I was submerged. Luckily I was able to repeat this dive the following day with my GoPro prepared.
The second dive was known as The Curve, a nice little shallow reef with an abundance of fish ???? and marine life, such as Butterly Fish, Angel fish, parrot fish and giant sea slugs.
I’m the afternoon Miranda and I grabbed our snorkel set and explored the local reef right in front of our retreat which was also teeming with corals and fish ????. Afterwards we freshened up and prepared ourselves for the evenings traditional BBQ ???? known as a LOVO.
Fiji snorkelling off VIANI BAY's Rainbow Reef -Fish Factory
One of our videos for family and friends on our world travel on board Catamaran Impi - here we are still in Fiji and anchored off Viani Bay where we did some snorkelling
VIANI BAY - a terrific day with Staffan Ehde and his family on SV SALSA, with Craig Chalker and Leanne Chalker on SV TRUE BLUE V. The local resident who visits each and every yacht by dinghy, Jack Fischer, came out to see us and told us of the good dive spots around Rainbow Reef. SV Salsa family kindly offered that Jack take Salsa out dragging our dinghy behind so we could anchor with a yacht in closer proximity to the reef which otherwise would have been a long dinghy ride. This video captures a bit of Viani and its surrounds and of the yachting crowd in general - what a fun time we are having in Fiji

Fantastic Beqa Lagoon with Waidroka Resort!
At the southwestern tip of Fiji's main island lies a large pearl shaped lagoon called Beqa Lagoon. There are many dive sites in the lagoon itself, all quite good, featuring great soft coral colonies. But to see spectacular hard coral gardens, you must venture to the outer reef of Beqa Lagoon. This dive video features one such location. The clarity of the water is vastly superior to the inner lagoon as is the intensity of the blue water.
Waidroka Bay Surf and Dive Resort was the operator for this dive. Waidroka has numerous dive boats (and surf boats) available for excursions anywhere within the Beqa Lagoon area. Waidroka also allows guests to dive the world famous Beqa Lagoon Shark Dive.
The Beqa Lagoon outer reef is actually one of the best places in Fiji to see spectacular hard coral gardens, with interesting swim-through caves and huge table/plate corals, without a lot of crowds. Northeast Fiji's (Taveuni area) reefs have been repeatedly blasted with cyclones these past years and most of the large tables are now gone. The Mamanucas' reefs, while good, are filled with tourists. These reefs are also readily accessible and do not require an additional flight from Nadi International Airport. This is an important note as the domestic airline, Pacific Sun, is unreliable at best.

FIJI: ECONOMY DAMAGED
English/Nat
The island of Fiji, once some people's idea of a paradise on Earth, is now learning a painful financial lesson.
The country's economy - based on tourism, sugar production and clothes
manufacturing - has been frozen since armed rebels stormed Parliament House on May 19 and took Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and most of his government hostage.
Some believe the damage could be long-term, and it may take many years for the economy to fully recover.
Tourism has been the first casualty with Japanese and Australian tourists staying away from the troubled tropical resort island.
But now the other industries are also feeling the effects.
Next to tourism, the two biggest industries are sugar, worth around U-S 120 million dollars a year from exports, and clothes manufacturing, worth about U-S 48 million dollars a year.
Before the coup, Fiji had a growing and promising clothing industry but now it faces an uncertain future.
Here at Mark One apparel, Indian and native Fijian women work side by side.
They toil hard in one of Fiji's the fastest growing and successful business.
There is no sign here of the ethnic tension that coup leaders have tried to whip up.
Before the recent political events unfolded, clothing manufacturing rivalled sugar production as Fiji's premier industry.
But the times are changing now and the owners know their business is in trouble - hit hard by the repercussions of the coup.
Bans imposed by Australian trade unions on exports to Fiji are hitting them hard as they can no longer buy raw materials.
When the cloth at this factory runs out - all the workers will have to be laid off.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There are twenty-thousand workers in our industry and ten years ago there wasn't an industry here at all of this size. We exported more than sugar last year. And we expect all this will disappear very quickly. They are expecting 20-thousand workers out of a work force of 117-thousand being put out of a job very quickly. And of course the others would be soon to follow as well.

Political uncertainty makes for low business confidence, and that has hit Fiji's very own stock exchange hard.
Although sporting a modest trading floor compared to London or Wall Street, the dealers here used to trade hundreds of thousands of dollars.
But now trading is only worth a few thousand a day.
Trading volume is extremely low and investors don't know where to shift their money.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The effect there is going to be is the confidence that will be shown by investors. It is all about confidence. That is where the situation is going to be. But investors must be confident to do that. Now right at this time I can understand why they are on hold but what are they going to do with the money. Now what are you going to do. Now in a normal market you sell out of stocks to go into real estate or something like that. Everything will be on hold and will remain on hold till the situation is resolved.

Elsewhere smaller elements of the economy are also making an impact.
Indian shop owners are closing up, fearing for the safety of their family amid the chaotic events that have made many Indian owned premises the target of rioting mobs in recent weeks.
This business was torched by the sectarian thugs.
But although coup leader George Speight expects an international backlash against his coup, he said that sanctions and economic and diplomatic isolation are a price worth paying for ethnic supremacy.
