Largest Lion Pride Ever Blocking Road In Kruger Park
The Sweni Mega Pride of lions on the road are all juveniles. I have counted seventeen. There were at least 8 adults of the road in the bush. The Pride entertained us for about an hour and all the lions disappeared in the bush. Filmed at the intersection of the H1-3 and the S126 close to Satara and Sweni Water Hole in Kruger National Park on 25 November 2016.

African Wildlife Safari at Kruger National Park, South Africa
If you gave me a list of only 10 more bucket-list travel experiences I could potentially have for the rest of my life, experiencing an African wildlife safari would be right near the top. After making the long bus journey from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park, I couldn't believe this - once in a lifetime - experience was finally about to happen. Waking up at the crack of dawn, we boarded our Land Rover and drove off in the dark to the gates of Kruger National Park. It wasn't long before we witnessed sunrise and our first animal encounter spotting prancing impalas.

The highlights of our first day of safari included spotting a pride of Lions including getting up close views of lioness affectionately licking her cubs and an Alpha male resting in the foreground. Lunchtime, was equally as eventful as I was bombed (shitted on) by two birds eager to grab scraps of our meal.
As the day progressed we spotted giraffes on a frequent basis. Two male giraffes fought swinging their heads violently at one another often landing direct blows to knees. Out of all the violent animal encounters I could have potentially witnessed, gazing at fighting giraffes was not something I would have ever anticipated.
The day ended with an epic sunset featuring a generous portion of crackers, cookies, cheese and wine. On the way back, when the sun had gone down, we used a flashlight to try and spot more animals. Our guide Lloyd, has an acutely trained eye and without his assistance we may have only spotted impalas ourselves ;)
African Wildlife Safari at Kruger National Park, South Africa Travel Video Transcript:
Okay, so today is the big day. Yesterday afternoon we reached the outskirts of Kruger National Park and today we're actually going in to spot some of the wildlife. So we're going in for a sunrise drive. It is really earlier. It is about 5:15 am right now. We're going to head into the park and - yeah - it is safari time!
Okay, so we finally reached the park and I'm going to give you a little tour of our cool truck for the day. Come on over. Come on in.
Make that big climb up there. Yeah, I'm in.
One thing that totally surprised me was just how close we got to the lions. I think it was only about 10 meters away from the road.
So they were really docile and the lioness was just sleeping and cleaning its cubs and in the back there was the big alpha male just stretching and yawning. It was surreal.
So that's been an amazing safari so far. It is only 10 in the morning and we've already seen more wildlife than I ever imagined. We saw lions, elephants, wildebeest. Oh, gosh more than I can even remember. Yeah, it was amazing and we were able to get up close and have a good look at them. So it has been so much fun.
So tell us what happened to you at lunchtime today? So the most ridiculous thing happened to me during lunch. A bird shit right here. It ricochet of off my shoulder all the way down to here. And while I was still recovering from the shock from that another bird shitted on this side. So I got hit on both shoulders but apparently if a bird shits on you it is good luck. So I have a double dose of good luck. Maybe that means I'm going to see cheetahs this afternoon. Woo hoo!
Right now we're visiting a private game reserve to see even more cool wildlife. And what caught us for a total surprise is that we saw so many giraffes. Apparently this is the most giraffes have ever been spotted out here.
So we saw them walk right in front of our vehicle and we even saw a couple of them fighting. They were swinging their heads at each other. It was completely bonkers.
Yeah, so overall it has been an amazing day. We saw more animals than we ever expected. And what a beautiful way to wrap up the day. Now we're just going to watch the sunset, drink some wine and enjoy some cheese. And do it all over again tomorrow.
This is part of our Travel in South Africa series. We're making a series of videos showcasing South African culture, South African arts, South African foods, South African religion, South African cuisine and South African people.

The scary moment a male lion attacks a car just after mating with a lioness!

Chemical engineer (29), Mark Williams-Wynn, explained to Latestsightings.com the story that unfolded on the H12, near Skukuza, early yesterday morning.

“It had been a strange drive. I came up the H4-1 early in the morning, which is usually the best road for predator sightings at this time of the year, but on this occurrence, the only good sighting was of a herd of elephants crossing the road.
I had already planned to go back down to Lower Sabie along the H1-2 and then H12, so when I was stopped by a car to tell me to take the H12 turnoff because of some lions, I was glad that I would finally see something interesting. When I arrived, there was a lion and lioness lying in the road, and another male lying behind an anthill a bit removed from the road. Because the lions were on the road, the cars were a bit of a mess. I patiently waited my turn to get front-row parking.
People were slowly moving off and more arriving, as is usual with a lion sighting. Eventually, I got close to the front. By this time, the big lion had made a few advances on the female, nuzzling her and trying to get her consent, but every time, he was rebuffed with a fierce growl from her. After the umpteenth attempt, all of a sudden, he walked away from her and started staring at the occupants of the closest car. I guess that he either decided to see if he could impress his lady with some bravado, or else he needed something to take his frustrations out of. At this point, I quickly started filming, as it looked as if something was about to happen. Luckily I started the camera rolling, as, quick as a flash, he had attacked the car and turned back to the female, as if to say, Look how brave I am. There was nothing that the occupants of the vehicle had done wrong, and luckily they had their windows up, as it could have otherwise ended in disaster. They just happened to be the closest vehicle to the lion when he lost his mind. The shaken tourists in the vehicle drove off shaken but unharmed. When looking at the reaction of the driver in the video, it did not even seem as if he was that afraid. But on speaking to them afterward, I think that they were fairly traumatised.
A quarter of an hour went past, and the crazy act of the lion was forgotten, new people arrived and everything seemed to be back to normality. Just another mating lion sighting in KNP. The female moved to the shade thrown by a safari vehicle that had parked to view the lions, and everyone was taking photos, videoing, etc, as one does at a lion sighting. But then, once again, the lion decided to see if the female was interested, and again he was rebuffed. This time, the closest vehicle was an open top safari vehicle. Thankfully the game guide driving this vehicle had lightning reflexes. As soon as the lion locked eyes with him, he started the vehicle and was already moving when the lion attacked. He did almost drive into another vehicle in his haste to get his guests out of harm's way, but a miss is as good as a mile. Unfortunately, I didn't get this second attack on video. But suffice to say, the quick reflexes of the game guide prevented disaster. All of the occupants of this second vehicle were ashen-faced after this close encounter.
This was probably the scariest thing that I have experienced in all of my holidays in the bush. The lion was just so unpredictable. I was not sure what he was going to do next. After the second attack, everyone gave the lion a wide berth. Even the female appeared to be abashed of what her consort had done. After a while of them lying in the shade I drove off to see what else I could find.
Mating lions on the road are fairly common. I've seen at least one pair every time that I come to the park. A lion attacking and hitting a car - I've never seen such a thing, and am glad that I managed to document it. It was good that the tourists had their windows up. It shows how dangerous putting any part of your body out of the window at a sighting is. Although I do not advocate having to drive around the park with windows up, this video definitely makes a strong case for doing so at a lion sighting, especially when they are right next to you. I also want to stress that the tourists did absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, no-one was hurt, simply because they followed all of the rules and did not panic.

Kruger Park's Largest Lion Pride Ever Walking in Road
Turning the corner and seeing a whole lot of yellow things in the road, you almost always assume it’s a herd of impala. But the shock and excitement one feels when one realizes it is a pride of lions walking towards you, is like nonother.
BOOK YOUR TRIP TO KRUGER:
Ram Goyel, an overseas visitor to the Kruger Park, was so mesmerized by his astonishing lion encounter one day on the H6 near Satara that his heart was literally beating outside his chest. To his greatest delight, the white lion was amongst this magnificent pride…

Ram told Latestsightings.com: “We were just returning from the N'wanetsi Picnic spot and this beautiful sighting came along and greeted us. It was a quiet morning and there were no other cars at the time. It was sheer disbelief!! At the end of it my family and I were jumping out of our skin. ☺
We were so lucky and thankful that the lions were walking towards us. I pulled over to the side and just let them come to us. My hand was shaking with exhilaration so the video is not perfectly still I'm afraid. The sighting ended a few minutes later when a few other cars showed up, and then literally pushed the lions off the road into the bushes.
Just give space to the wildlife and be patient. Don't intrude upon the animals. Respect Kruger!”

Big 5 Volunteer - Albertinia, South Africa
September 7-15, 2012
2nd and last week of my volunteer program. My best friend arrives Africa and joins in the fun. :) This week was for Wildlife Conservation - Big 5 Volunteer at the Garden Route Game Lodge in Albertinia. A couple of hours by car from Cape Town.
This is what happened. We were in a mini-campsite and slept in tents. Spent everyday waking up at 6:30 for our 7am daily drive out to look for the cheetahs, rhinos and giraffes. We stop for our morning coffee somewhere in the reserve to catch the sunrise. After which we head back for breakfast. Then off to work we go (cleaning the elephant boma and the cheetah enclosures, improving the cheetah walk, hammering nails, chopping wood, cementing holes, rehabilitating roads, picking up rocks, throwing rocks, etc).
At night, we hang out at the volunteers lounge, watch Big Bang Theory, play cards, have a drink (or two...or three) or have the most amazing african braai.
This was such a beautiful place. The other volunteers -Anna, Katharina, Michael, Jennie and Chris were such great company. The facilitators - Hein, Kim, Liezel and Russouw treated all of us like family. To all of the people I've spent those wonderful 7 1/2 days with: Thank you for giving me a week that I will always remember. :)
P.S. the smell of the cheetah poop still lingers in my nose.
PPS I used Status Quo's Rocking All Over The World for this video because that played in the car while we were on our way to our dinner buffet treat at the Lodge. And I just found it extremely applicable :)

This is the incredible moment where an elephant charges at a van full of tourists on a safari expedition.
The animal is walking with a herd of other elephants, when it appears to run towards the van at the Maseke Game Reserve in South Africa, in an effort to scare the safari away from their calves.
Frank De Beer, a safari guide from Hoedspruit, Limpopo, South Africa, filmed the incredible footage after spotting the herd of elephants.
Frank said: “We were on a morning safari, and as we came around the corner of a road, there was a whole breeding herd of elephants in the road.

Leopard attacks dog, dog attacks leopard, dog wins
Good questions all! This dog strayed into a protected area. It was not supposed to be there, for its own safety and that of the wildlife. The tourists are not allowed to alight from their safari vehicle, either. The dog strayed in from a nearby temple. Indeed, it can spread rabies to the hyenas and other canids in the reserve...
