'The Purple Hills of Holland' - Flowering Heaths @ The Veluwe
Here’s another special Dutch landscape, one that is most beautiful in August and September, when it turns to a very powerful purple: the heaths of the Veluwe, in the central part of the Netherlands.
These heaths all grow on a geologically very special terrain – one that reminds us of the dramatic extent that climatic changes can have on our planet: push moraines (‘stuwwallen’ in Dutch), a glacial landscape.
The moraines (that can also be found in northern Germany) are subsequent ridges of sand, pebbles and larger rocks that were pushed up during the ice ages by an Antarctic-sized ice sheet that covered a large part of northern Europe – carrying massive granite boulders across thousands of kilometres in its icy flow, all the way from the mountains of Norway and Sweden.
Ecologically - in today's climate - the landscapes are also special. The higher grounds are very dry, whereas wetlands form around springs at their feet. Both the wet and the dry environment are oligotrophic – attracting very special vegetation, including three different species of heather. On the dry terrain that is common heather -Caluna vulgaris- (being the purple booster in late summer!), occasionally joined by black crowberry -Empetrum nigrum- on northern slopes, whereas the more pinkish flowering cross-leaved heath -Erica tetralix- favours the wetter parts.
Other interesting species include the common juniper, a small endemic evergreen coniferous shrub that germinates as a pioneer species in sandy planes and can then grow hundreds of years old (and that depends on open windy conditions for successful pollination) and for hungry hikers of course endless supplies of bilberries (European blueberries, smaller & darker).
In this environment that is naturally very low in nitrogen the plants themselves too grow hungry – in a quite literal sense. Those with a careful eye (please don’t step on them – some are very endangered!) can spot different species of sundew – Drosera in Latin – carnivorous plants that have adapted to live on highly oligotrophic soils and evolved to prey on insects to supplement their nutrient requirements, including full-grown dragonflies as our video shows…(!)
== environmental threats & solutions ==
Both the heaths on the higher ridges and those in the wetter areas are threatened by environmental pollution – most notably nitrogen pollution from car exhausts and intensive agriculture, leading for instance to grass encroachments. This pollution requires different forms of maintenance of the terrains, including grazing by (apart from deer) Scottish highland and heck cattle, sheep and horses and in more drastic cases top soil removal.
To end with a positive note we also have a somewhat simplistic yet very structural solution: end (over)fertilisation in agriculture – and ride bikes and trains instead of cars. Not only when you go to work – but also when you go to see these special landscapes yourself, which is highly recommended(!)
Best time to visit is second half of August and first half of September – to see the bright purples of the flowering heather that is.
