Fundació Joan Miró. A centre for the study of Miró’s work and contemporary art
The Fundació Joan Miró was created by Miró himself, at first principally with works from his own private collection, with a desire to set up an internationally recognised centre in Barcelona for Miró scholarship and contemporary art research, and to disseminate the collection. The Fundació opened to the public on 10 June 1975 and has since become a dynamic centre in which Joan Miró’s work coexists with cutting-edge contemporary art.
With an interdisciplinary approach, the Fundació organises temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st century artists as well as academic activities and projects in collaboration with other institutions and organisations. Through its exhibition and educational programmes, the Fundació Joan Miró explores lines of research linked to the work of Miró and to contemporary art.
The Fundació is located in a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert, making it one of the few museums anywhere in the world in which the complicity between artist and architect underpins the dialogue between the works and the space that houses them. The Fundació offers an overview of the landscapes of Joan Miró’s art and life, creating an enriching dialogue with other artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Fundació Joan Miró, Centre d'Estudis d'Art Contemporani is a museum of modern art honoring Joan Miró located on the hill called Montjuïc in Barcelona, Catalonia. The idea for the foundation was made in 1968 by Joan Miró. Miró formed the foundation with his friend Joan Prats. Miró wanted to create a new building that would encourage particularly younger artists to experiment with contemporary art. The building was designed by Josep Lluís Sert to ensure that this work could also be made available to the public and exhibited. He designed the building with courtyards and terraces and to create a natural path for visitors to move through the building.
Building began on the mountain of Montjuïc and the foundation opened on 10 June 1975. Not only was the architect a close friend of Miró but so was the first president Joaquim Gomis and Miró was amongst the first board. It was claimed that the new foundation represented a new way of viewing the concept of a museum and how the people of Barcelona could relate to their cultural heritage. Expansion in 1986 to the building added an auditorium and a library which holds some of the 10,000 items in the Foundation and Miró's collection.
In line with Miró's original idea the Foundation has a space named Espai 13 which is dedicated to promoting the work of young experimental artists. Although there is also work by Peter Greenaway, Chillida, René Magritte, Rothko, Tàpies and Saura. The museum uses QRpedia to allow visitors to read Wikipedia articles about objects in the collection, translated into their preferred language.

Joan Miro, Barcelona, Spain
Joan Miró i Ferrà ( 20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma de Mallorca in 1981. His work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an assassination of painting in favor of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

Hi, I'm Alyson, your personal guide. Together with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the wonders of the world.
Today I'll accompany you through the Miró Foundation.
La Fundació Joan Miró is one of the most characteristic and visited museums in Barcelona!
The building standing before you is a great gift that Barcelona's most important 20th century artist and original exponent of surrealism gave to his hometown. In fact, he himself wanted a gallery and an archive devoted to his art on the hill of Montjuïc. The Foundation is surrounded by beautiful gardens covering the entire hill.
You should know that this is the largest collection of works by Joan Miró, with more than 5,000 drawings, about 220 paintings, 180 sculptures, and even some tapestries! The Foundation is also a vital center of creation, where in addition to the works of Miró, you will see some by contemporary artists and new talents.
But now I'd like to discuss the building, which was designed by Miró's close friend, Josep Lluís Sert, who was a prominent avant-garde Catalan architectect…
